Tigers Soon In Alberta Waters !
troutlover replied to McLeod's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
ok ill ask the dumb question. What makes a tiger trout so great? -
So I have been trying to jump into the steelhead game for a few years now but prime time comes at a time of year when I just cant seem to make it work. The problem is Hunting season gets in the way and this year I decided a choice had to be made and I think I'm going to take a break from hunting which I enjoy but my passion really lies with fishing. So my question is why do fishermen choose to drive all the way to terrace and pay the daily fees when Idaho is much closer and there are no daily fees? Are the fish different? Am I missing something? Second question is why go spey? Is it simply for casting distance if walk and wading? I have a jet boat so access to runs and whichever side of the river shouldn't be an issue so would it make sense for me to just go with a single hand rod?

The Hutterites on a very sensitive watershed I fish are true protectors of the fishery. They follow the regulations work with fish and game and quiz fishermen to make sure they know the regulations. Just thought id mention it to make sure we don't paint everyone with the same brush.

Day 4 Today we needed a change of scenery so we headed to the high alpine. We didn't know how the fishing would be or if there would be too much snow but we wanted to get into a section of the river that went through a box canyon and had a reputation of being beautiful. We got a later start today and the weather was perfect. We were into fish right away and i was thinking we are in for another special day. These fish have a harder winter than the fish on the lower section of the river they are noticeably skinnier but WOW are they ever beautiful! Lots of walking on this section, a steep gradient. Lots of pocket water and its amazing where these fish materialize out of. The tricky part is this river is full of huge boulders of lava rock and if you don't handle the fish they cant cut you off quickly. Here is a picture of a nice fish i really like the band of red on this fish. And another pretty nice couple of fish I have to mention that goodflymclovin caught an absolute slab there is a clip on instagram of it and a bunch of other clips from this trip at Mogum50 or search #slabracadabra. This section of the river has given up some real monsters in years past, it was cool to listen to the stories of goodflymclovin who grew up in this area and has stories of rainbows over 25 inches and over 15 lbs. Day 4 is going to be great we are headed to no name creek our hope is for some BWOs to hatch and the fish to notice.

Day 3 Well the fishing was so great we had to go back to the location we were at yesterday but it was Saturday and again getting there early would be key. We got there at 8am and it was COLD. No slush on the water so we started to fish and hoped for some early morning success but the fish were asleep and our feet froze after a half hour so we decided to wait for it to warm up a bit and we warmed our toes by the fire The traffic on the river was insane we were across from a boat launch and there was a steady stream of drift boats launched throughout the day. Lots of people on the shore we had a nice run tied up with three of us and we rotated throughout the day and had another day of dozens of fish. I took a few photos of one to remember. Brow trout are a special suprise on a section of this river that sees mostly rainbow trout. Many of the fish are a standard size of 15 to 18 inches beautiful color and FULL of fight i am amazed at the pull of these fish! Today something special happened i caught the fish of a lifetime i dont know if the pictures will show it but it was HUGE. He took what we call a purple Mailey (named after Mike Mailey who shared it with us) This fly absolutely SLAYS Idaho Rainbows. The fish came up and thrashed the surface immediately but i didnt see it. Then it started to PULL and i mean it pulled hard. Really I thought the i had a fish foul hooked. It was a game of me pulling a hard as i dared and this fish just sitting and holding finally the fish started to move and i was able to put some side pressure on it . It finally broke surface again and i saw the dorsal fin WHAT! is that thing! my heart started to race i had confirmation this is not a fish i wanted to lose. By that time goodflymclovin was ther with video and he got a better look at the fish and he was knid enough to mention " oh man the hook is just in the tip of his nose! don't horse him!" now my heart is really going with a bit more firm pressure fish head finally comes up and i scoop him into the net and let out a whoop and laugh. It was Epic. Have a look. There were a couple fish in the class caught this day. Day 3 will be remembered for a long time.

Day 2: Yikes! it was cold this morning. We knew we would have to get on the river early to be on the water we wanted. I laugh to myself when i her guys talk about how crowded the Bow river is> The Bow river is solitude compared to down here. In order to get good real estate we suffered through a couple hours of slush in the morning. Things were really slow. Then as the slush stopped coming so did the fish goodflymclovin had 6 in a row and i knew it was game on! soon everyone was into some nice fish Was a solid day and the therapy has begun i hope we continue to have such great success there was several dozen fish caught today. I was amazed at the fight these fish had for the temp of the water. I got schooled a couple times.

Day 1: Drove ten hours it was dark no pictures today. Arrived at 2 am. Sleeping at a questionable Super 8. Today we hunt trouts, tonight I try to figure out how to post pictures (this might be a very short thread). The goal for the next six days. Catch enough fish to hold me over to spring time in Calgary, to avoid break down of my soul! ( dramatic I know, but true) stay tuned there might be pictures.

2015 Proposed Bow River Changes
troutlover replied to jasonvilly's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
yes you suck at fishing, everyone else was catching record numbers of browns. All kidding aside, i dont like the change i think that angling pressure has little to do with problems that face the bow river and more to do with dam management of water levels and focusing on habitat improvements. but changing regs is free the things that really matter will cost money. The changes wont even be enforced but who really cares the impact of disregarded regs will not collapse the fishery destroying the habitat will. Look at the K river beautiful water destroyed habitat. -

Hey here is a link to support an independent material supplier his materials are amazing and of the highest quality. He is raising funds and providing a great return to those who participate. If anything I hope to make you aware of a really great supplier of top grade materials. Edit \: I cant figure out how to share the link. If you go to Gofundme.com and click on Business then search " new fly tying products / development " it will come up.

Here is something random, so I believe it fits here in flyfishy world. I am starting to think that the amount of day light has a significant impact on my need to fish. Like a trees cycle is determined on temperature and the amount of solar energy it receives. I have noticed that as the days get longer my need to fish has started to burn within my soul. Sure I get out when the chinooks come.... but with out the ass kicking runs and jumps of a summer BOW river rainbow the void is not filled. OH MY SOUL HUNGERS! Ill tell you this.... If that ground hog sees its shadow today I will hunt its family down and they will never rise from their cold hole in the ground ever again.........Oh ya almost forgot.....troutlover eggs and bacon, pickles are sour when the batteries died tonight ouch my toes! GO.

Fly Fishing Expo
troutlover replied to SilverDoctor's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Hey Darren if you get to pick go with the 8'6 it has a softer feel than the 9 foots. But I guess it depends on what you like. They will let you cast it they have a bunch set up at their shop. I found on my 9 foot I had to go up 1 line to get it to load nice at shorter distances. When trout fishing I rarely make long casts im sneaky like a ninja on red bull. -

Boat Launch / Pick Up Etiquette
troutlover replied to cgyguy's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
Just one more thing to mention for boat owners and walk and waders. Please be mindful of where you park down at police launch. its hard to turn around when people park in the wrong spots down there. -

I think you nailed it. Maybe I would mention to not assume the worst of people and take a minute to educate if you see ignorance. You are going to find out real fast if the person is a newb or an idiot. Be prepared to just walk away if they are an arse. I was new last year and I made a few mistakes at the launch but quickly learned the drill. The dirty looks often let me know when I was out of line but nobody was an ***hole to me. On one particular occasion I deserved to be called out I just wasn't thinking I quickly apologized and the guy said he figured I was new to my boat and to not worry about it. he chose not to let me ruin his day or mine. That's the kind of guys I like to fish with. -

Thousands of flies I will never use. With experience I have learnt its about size shape and presentation it has saved me a lot of money. However once I a while, I still fall prey to flies designed to catch fishermen and not fish. -

The beard on that one dude is EPIC. I bet all the fish in those rivers are dead from all that jet boat activity.
