Alberta's Trout Highway
troutlover replied to jpinkster's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
I know of a special couple streams that I have caught 100 fish on one day and 0 my next 3 trips I think that's what keeps them safe and quiet. Don't see a lot of boot tracks at any of them. Yet they hold HUGE fish however they are a bit of a drive to get skunked more often then not. But when they are on ....... -

Anyone With Jet Boat Help
troutlover replied to bigfry's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Sideways is badways. I almost flipped my boat this year on a gravel bar. I miss judged the current and got sucked in thanks to the quick thinking of Goodfly Mclovin he jumped out and dragged the nose around as the other 2 of us sat on the edge of the boat. It happens SO FAST. I have a whole new respect. I mentioned it in another thread but ill mention it again. Boat insurance is cheap it covers this kind of thing. -

Drift Boat Theft Deterrent
troutlover replied to bigfry's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
You need something on the wheel like a boot. The hitch locks don't work they just chain or strap the hitch neck to their hitch and deal with the lock later. If you disable the wheels then there isn't much they can do. Make sure you call your insurance company and get special coverage for your boat. It is cheap and it covers theft and accident, Say if your boat slid off the trailer or you flipped it on the river. -
Brent you made me spit water out my nose....thanks. Big fry make sure you get Mel to take your vehicle home you don't want to leave it at a launch over night..... There are no fish below mackinnons but if you do try it out take streamers and dry flies. but dont nymph (gag)

Hog caller hopper is very cool, nice tie. Something to try is glue some lead into the rear segments of the abdomen this will make the back end sit low in the water and you would be amazed at how effective a hopper that sits low in the water is. The best is when you balance them to the point that they "bob" under the surface and back up, kind of balanced in the film. This can also be accomplished with a dropper (which is usually the most practical way to go). Very deadly tactic especially on trout that reject a high floating foam.

I stopped by and casted one as well. The new handle is a great improvement. I cant believe how thin the but section is and it flexes down to the handle, very cool. The thing I like best about it is it loads proper to the amount of line I had and then with the proper load I could get the power to shoot a bunch more line. This stick is going to be an arm saver. I find a lot of rods have a hard time finding this balance. However the true test is going to be practical use. Once I've got one set up and had it out on the river ill update.

Poachers, wormin rippin lips. trips to the trunk another in hidden cooler back to the river takem to the trunk limit + limit +limit +limit = No more toads.

I'll go pick up a TFO Impact and give it a try. I'll post what I think. I Generally like TFO I don't spend the $$ on a TFO that I do on a Hardy Zenith so I don't have the same expectations. It is interesting to see where a guy is getting the most bang for his buck. I think TFO did a great job with the BVK and I didn't see the quality issues with the BVK that bcube is mentioning that you do see on their lower series rods. The fact is if you get a rod from them that is misaligned or has any other type of defect its really not a valid point for the fact that a quick trip to their shop and they will take care of it. They REALLY stand behind their product. Now in the end for me its all about how does it cast. I'll let you know.

Well in one week it all opens up and if you put faith in the extended forecast it looks like it might be half decent weather. I cant wait to visit my sacred waters to awaken old friends. I have the day booked off and made my co-workers aware that I may be MIA on Wednesday as well depending on how things go. Its going to be hard to focus on work this coming week. Anyone else have plans to disappear from work on Tuesday?

OH MAN! That would have been sweet justice if they bumped flows over night and the boat drifted off.

eagle did you have your jet boat with you? Do you think they were being assholes or just showing off and ignorant to the fact that they are in fact assholes.

We Wimped Out This Weekend...
troutlover replied to ÜberFly's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
I went to police yesterday you would of had about 4 inches of snow on your tent you made the right choice. -
from the article it seems like they know that it is an issue and they are pressing to have a dedicated task force. That would be a great thing. I think it would help organize a lot of responsible ATV groups as well. Ontario has a great community of ATV groups and trails. I think Alberta might get there one day if the laws get a little more support.

Calm down sponsor police. I have no financial interest in the store just letting the community know where to get a deal this weekend. -
Westwinds Has New Owners
troutlover replied to troutlover's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Just a reminder to everyone Westwinds has a huge inventory blow out this weekend. There will be free BBQ at lunch, Door prizes and grab bags. I think it starts at 9am. -
I heard that Westwinds has new owners so i stopped by to check it out yesterday. Its the same shop but they have some new stock. They had a bunch of new pike flies so Im going to stock up for next weekend. They gave me the heads up that they are blowing out all the inventory May 9th weekend before they do a big renovation. I think they said 10% off everything and up to 70% on some stuff. It will be worth checking out and seeing what they do with the place.
