Moving To Calgary! Where To Live?
troutlover replied to Slanter's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
I would consider the south of Calgary most of the great Alberta streams are SW Alberta out HWY 22 or S on #2. If you were in Glamorgan you would be a 25 min drive through Calgary before you get out of town. Also if you bought in the south you would be close to the Lower Bow where it would be 5 min to the river and you will have many more opportunities to fish in the evenings. With the ring road completed to the south the commute to other parts of the city is much faster now. -
Love mine going on three years of hard abuse and no problems at all except the smell

ha ha you would then have a bugger at both ends of the rod taco.

You are stuck with pretty much the Bow the Crow and the Old Man till June 16. The three are worth fishing as for the other streams that open June 16th you couldn't fish them all in a lifetime. I have gone on many explorations and honestly I have always found fish and never been disappointed. However my one true love is the Bow River when ever I take a day to fish else where I question why I traveled 200km to fish when I have one of the worlds best in my back yard. If I stray from the Bow its not about the fish its about finding beautiful places. If you explore the hills west of Calgary you will see things that will blow your mind. Welcome.

Questions Related To A New Rod
troutlover replied to relk19's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
The rod you have is fine for all rivers. The only reason to get the heavier rod would be if you're going for Pike. A sink tip line is easy to cast if you know how to double haul. If you don't know how to double haul it would be worth while to take a lesson. My favorite streamer line is the SA streamer express or the Rio one that has a longer sinking section but that is for fast heavy water. Most of the time I fish streamers with a floating line I nymph 100% with a floating line. You should Google streamer and nymphing tactics do a bunch of reading before committing to expensive equipment. Or stop into a fly fishing store on a slow winter day most shops are more than willing to educate their customers. -
Im sure it has something to do with balancing the many different uses of the resource. Biologists study the system and determine the impact. Then the government ignores the study and does whatever they want to satisfy the majority. Pretty simple........ If it concerns you then i think you should educate yourself with the studies that have been done by biologists and make your own moral decisions on how you are going to fish, when and for what species. (within the regulations of course). The Rainbows stacking up at the Highwood and fishermen targeting them is a prime example. A study has been done. It proved conclusively that there is little impact on the fish and therefore it continues. With that kind of solid, professional and scientific evidence one can make a decision whether it is right for them or not. Im sure you could take this kind of approach on many waters in many different situations. If your question is why the government decides to regulate one way or another..... Squeaky wheel gets the grease.IMO. but.... Sometimes they get it right.

Competition at a young age is very important and it is great that you participated. You will learn that almost all things you do in life have a competitive aspect and to learn to compete well at a young age will bring you success in your future. Now lets see a picture.

thanks! -
If I was coming from out of town the Elk would be my first choice. Beautiful, Great town to hang out in you will catch fish. However I would want to do both Calgary is just a short 3 hr drive from Fernie. The bow will challenge you but there is the chance for a trout of a life time. August can be difficult on the Bow unless you are in the later part of the month. If you go to the Elk it is also a short drive to the Crowsnest river but again a little more of a technical river in August. I bet if you post here when you are making the trip you would be able to find some local guys to fish with for a day, if you want to avoid some of $$$ for a guide.

How about not being IGNORANT and learning the rules BEFORE you fish. The user of the resource has a responsibility to know the regulations that's why officers don't hand out free flies and give fishing tips. FInes are what are deserved by those who abuse the resource. I totally agree with taking the time with and angler on the bank for friendly advice, teaching and help to those not breaking any rules however; when it comes to breaking rules that are printed out in black and white in the regulations we should all have zero tolerance.
