  1. Hey all Good topic Murray Been here in cowtown since 76 Early youth dunked worms, spin cst, buzz bombed for salmon, any way I could fish I would. Introduced to flyfishing by a friend 30 years ago. Not much instruction just hacked and muddled my way through for years. After many lightbulb moments I finally caught on gradually honing my skills. Absolutely love dry fly fishing. About 20 fly ins for pike under my belt. Still haven't broke 30lbs (29.5 twice) Married, kids (2) awesome wife who let's me fish too much. 25 years in hardwood flooring ... My back ! Here's to the next adventure . Dave.
  2. We have provided drift boat storage at our place downstream of police for the last 10 years. Handy & cheap. PM me for details.
  3. Kevin Peterson out of country pleasures Dee Chitani is really a seasoned veteran & is tops in the game.
  4. I would say that an accurate measurement is impossible without landing the fish. He simply had a big fish on thought it was about 24 so called it a 24, c'mon were fishermen we don't need no stinkin ruler.
  5. Had a funny one years back, Hooked a good brown that immediately sky jumped up into the tall grass beside me and fight was over. Whole thing lasted about 2 seconds & he was landed.
  6. Color because of age will be tough to match , old will have aged & what you sand will look new. Time will do the job. If the teak has a clear finish then I would buy a small quart of neutral stain ( clear ) . I can give you this or purchase anywhere they sell stain. Home Depot will do. If you need to build up some finish buy a spray bomb of polyurethane probably in semi gloss and build up some light coats.
  7. You guys ever try a thermacell? I use bug spray and if the wind is down the thermacell works pretty well. It has a butane charge that heats a strip which has a strip with the deterant on it. Hang it off your belt loop or whatever.
  8. If I remember correctly we sold quite a few of these with no returns. All plastic, drag knob was quite large which may be a line catcher, simple one way bearing for left to right conversion , plenty of spools and a case. A decent starter reel in the low 100 range. I don't think you would get much more for a cartridge system for that price. Rods I would not go over a 6 wt 9 ft for a do it all rod , your not going to pike fish with this but able to easily streamer, nymph & cast some dries. You probably won't have the finesse of a 4 wt for laying down delicate dries on 5 x but will get the job done. I also really liked the feel og the greys grxi rods, excellent action faster action rod and great value for what you got. Right in that range you were looking for. Some would argue that a slower mid flex would be better suited for the beginner & that may be true but learn to cast well and this will work great. Take a casting lesson from one of the shops for an hour & they can start you in the right direction. If that's not in the budget pm me & I will help out.
  9. I've bought several new, raider, leer, big steel. Also bought 2 from that used canopy place other side of innisfail . Saves about 1/2 off full retail, few hundred to paint. Leer was the nicest for my purpose.
  10. Have a pair, very well made , comfortable, expensive but worth it if you use em allot. The fit is really good too.
  11. If your not into regular maintaince with beeswax etc.. I would think one of our commercial wood flooring finishes would be the ticket. Low voc' highly abrasion resistant, non yellowing. Water base so it drys quick, I'd put about 5 coats on. You can apply right over your current finish and it will still cure. Pm me and I will give you my number and hook you up. Only if this is of interst of course. Dave
  12. It's seems like everyone has the impression of the JET BOATERS are all ripping around, dodging drift boats, shooting rooster tails, stereo type red necks. Bull crap, this is my 19th season with a jet & for the most part never had much of a problem. The boat is used for transportation, it gets me to water I want to fish. 10 years ago maybe a dozen jets used the river the odd time. Now probably 30 plus are launching from Mac, carsland or police. 2 years ago the sport jet 18 footers were using police and were there not to fish but do donuts & be a pain in the ass. Usually the big thunder jets are only seen @ high water but rarely. Probably got the itch to run there 75k boats. Before I ever got a jet I used to go with a friend who had a jet & launch under the calf robe bridge. Pretty quiet back then , no troubles at all with dodging rafts etc.. on the water. If its as busy as people say , rafts etc i would say no jets above the city limits. As far as people being pissed off about jets in general it's not people its "fly fisherman " they are very important you know. Most of the boat users are good out there, some are learning.
  13. Merry Christmas everyone.
  14. I pull spark plugs and fire a shot of fogging oil into each hole, put plugs back in so motor is " fogged " for the season. I also disconnect fuel line @ boat launch and let motor die to burn the last of the gas out of it for the season. I had a Johnson 2 stroke that this worked on for years, never a problem. I now have a evinrude etec that self winterizes when I run it through that mode, yes fancy. Apart from fuel stabilizer in the tanks not much to do. I'm sure auto marine or Internet would tell you anything specific for a yammy.
  15. Sometimes a flashlight run up & down the seems from the inside works, of course do this in a dark room and light will shine through any pinholes. Aqua seal both sides.
  16. Is it a certain section of the line, I find that over a period if I'm dry fly fishing for instance that I'm only using 30 or so feet of the same section over & over, same with nymping, same sort of cast over & over. Starts to break down that section. Your line definitely should have last a lot longer than that. I wipe mine down here & there when it starts to cast like crap or starts sinking or I can hear it in the guides . I think everything is good then one day look down & yep it's time for a new line.Keep your bug spray off it, let your reel dry out at night , clean it once in a while & generally your good.
  17. Been feeding our last 3 & current dawg the raw dog food. Mix it with a bit of chopped fresh fruit, raw veggies & mix it up. Dog seems to absorb all nutrients no poops like greasy pl400 coats are wicked good & keeps em lean & trim. They seem to love it like crazy. All in all works out cheaper that the mega bag of dried kibble.
  18. I went for an early morning fish sat am, got out of the launch when only a couple of vehicles were around so pretty simple to get boat in , get parking & be on my way. A friend/guide phoned me yesterday & said by 8:30 things were a different story. He arrived with clients & there were several boats in various stages of readiness . This is where some common sense & etiquette should come come into play. Usually if your ready & next guy in line is not check & see if its cool to go ahead & put boat in. My friend check with red Lincoln truck driver & company to see how things are coming along only to get blasted & told to wait his effen turn and he was here first .... My friend backs off & waits for the red Lincoln hot head. Another guide who I will not disclose is ready to go & mentions his readiness to Lincoln man ... Lincoln man shoots his mouth off .... Bad move, guide walks over pulls Lincoln out of his truck & proceeds to rag doll & absolutely beat the ever living shyt out of Lincoln...at least 5 unanswered shots to the face & his day is over. I don't think he floated that day. What is the lesson to be learned here?
  19. Should be Saturday
  20. It's Mike Day from the 1st Troutfitters
  21. I remember reading that back in 70's one of the great lakes had this exact problem of this bloom covering the majority of the lake. was to be a complete loss of anything marine due to no oxygen. A green blue film much like oil base paint? Turns out this was a direct result of any chemicals fertalizers etc... used on any nearby farms. rain would come, runoff would occur & boom major blooms choking out the lake. They figured out the cause, set forth some measures & had a complete turn around in 2 -3 years. My family and i spend some time @ Twin Vally & midway through summer the grass clipping bloom is extremly heavy, kids dont want to go in the water. last year i saw a complete blanket of the blue green slime, very oil like around the launch area & seemed quite familier to the article I read. In past years pre 05 fishing the sheep lower down , brown slime snot covering the rocks, kneel down any your stained up, lots of surrounding farms, ranchs etc..I guess thats the way it is for the sheep as for the lakes I dont go past end of July so dont really see it @ its worst but something to consider.
  22. My anchor rope kept twisting up on me as well, I added a real nice harken pully from glenmore sailboats, larger diameter pully & has a stainless swivel on the end where the anchor goes. This helped lift up easier but rope kept twisting up... Back to GS & upgraded rope , can't remember name right now, white premium quality , little bigger diameter & never a twist since.
  23. A 1/3 of the road has dropped about 5 ft down , another half of it before the turn around launch & parking lot is still under water. The gravel in the launch area is pretty deep. Right now the only hope for maybe getting a boat in is too slide it off the road drop into the bottom end of the lagoon.
