Legacy Island Tree Wrapping
eagleflyfisher replied to bcubed's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
I'm planning on being there. Any need to bring a boat, moving stuff upstream etc.. -
Hey that's the boat, kinda in shallow heh! Nothing around to winch off of. Maybe some jackalls & logs. Problem going backwards it's gets no deeper. I wasn't in my jet, just out for an evening stroll when they thought it was ok too piss around & blast some water at me.
-
I head down to the river hoping for a bit of action. Arrive & hang out for 5 min then hear a bigger jetboat coming up river. It goes through some back channels blast up river & gets about 200 yds up & starts doing donuts for awhile. This goes on then eventually keeps going up and out of site. Quiet again & I think great their gone. 20 min later here they come again flying along probably doing 40 They head my direction and run the whole bank I'm on for 100yds about 30 ft off. I stand up so they see me and start waving them off, the river is 200 ft wide at this point. He keeps coming right at me, sun at his back, he saw me for sure then just for spite right beside me throws a shithook with the ass end of his boat and rocks me with waves. Bastards & other things I yell! He keeps going another 200 yds down, fish hooks left then right & piles it up onto a gravel bar high & dry. Stranded in the middle of the river & no possible way to shore. The boats at least 2000 pounds. They were done. So the evening went with me trying to get the RC's or fire dep too save their butts. They got a lift to shore by another boat, but theirs is still there. And I never made one cast.

We Wimped Out This Weekend...

Man that looks good! -
Blood knot 60-40-30-20 maxima then Albright on 20 or 30 knot able wire. Winds up about 9' overall. Usually do a Duncan loop wire to fly. Some of my buddies use 80 or 100lb flouro instead of wire , occasionally sheared off by big fish. I guess my method sounds abit time consuming but that's how I've always done it. I'd like to put in a small clip on my wire for fly swap out but haven't seen the snaps and how would you attach it ? Crimp sleeves?

I've used many different lines and for me nothing really stood out over another. I echo what Clive said about a floating line, you will use it 99 percent of the time. I like to cover as much water as I can so like to throw as long of a cast as possible. Lots of variables though, bloody wind , big flies, dirty line etc... All play a factor in how you get it out there. I bought a new SA line last spring for pike and I would say it chucks a fly better than any other line Ive used. Short fat head seems to fire out there with a lot less effort. I used it the other day for a bit and noticed after being on the reel all winter I didn't have to stretch it out so that's a plus. I'm sorry but I don't have the box handy so can't give exact series of sa but I did get it up at iron bow so they would know. Found box it's called the Titan taper.

For dry fly fishing, hunting rising trout in tough spots, skinny water, no cover, flat water etc.. No I don't want a bullit fast action rod to lay down my 18 BWO on a 12-14 ft 5x leader. I want to lay that down nice and easy. Now are some fast action rods quicker than others? I would say yes. I picked up a couple rods last year in a 3&4 wt. I don't mind having a few 4 wts around, well the new ones are so bloody fast stiff that I find it really tough to fish the way I want. So I would say get a rod that is a little more forgiving would be a good way to go. It also depends on your ability, if you go with a super fast it will just take a while to get really good with it. Barry Mitchell Has Passed Away
eagleflyfisher replied to DonAndersen's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
I had the pleasure of meeting Barry several times and had some some really good talks. He had a great spirit that made him one of those guys easy to get along with. Starting in the 80's as many others I used the AFG as my bible to scope out possible new areas to explore. I even phoned Barry on occasion to pick his brain. He seemed to have knowledge about every piece of water in Alberta. A big loss for all, you guys that were Barry's close friends , hang in there . Very sorry to hear of his passing. -
I never met Jeff but it sounds like they broke the mold for sure. It's gotta be real tough for the friends and families coping with the loss. Jeff really sounds like a good guy and it's great that you have so many fond memories. Rest in peace.

So I tried my light, my daughters gel nail uv drying aparati & stayed tacky. Sunny today so brought flies into the sun and hit it with my magnifying glass. All dried pretty darn hard with a good gloss to them. I was building up pretty thick heads on these one so maybe too much for the uv flashlight. I hope this stuff is tough , I've got about 8 bucks in polar bear tied into each one!
-
Ok thanks guys, I'll give it a wipe Colin & thanks don thought it would dry harder
-
I think my lit is called a power light? Quite heavy , short lots of holes in the end where the light comes out (blue) Minutes & minutes and still gummy. I even tried a couple of different uv lights out of my kids reptile tank. I know the product cures, I used the sun a few months back when I bought it.
-
Little help please, using loon uv finish, really thick stuff. Coated fly head & hit it with uv lite. New batteries yes (4aaa) nice and bright. Still remains quite tacky. Does how thick it goes on matter. Are there different uv levels that are only suitable for some products? Be nice if the sun was shining today, that sure cures well. Thanks.

2015 Proposed Bow River Changes
eagleflyfisher replied to jasonvilly's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
The way I've come to understand it is that yes sapro exploded as a result of the trans alta diversion. Water ran high through the summer, deposited silt throughout, the sapro thrived in the silt and was ready to take hold. The river was then dropped in the fall to incredible low levels. The water temps were high, water was low, fish were crammed closer together than ever. The sapro now ready to go grabbed hold of the stressed fish. Be it fish caught by anglers or not it spread. Why the Browns & not so much rainbows I'm not surE. So no the Browns decline is not from just angling during the spawn . Angling for Browns during the spawn while they have sapro may be a different story. I get it, they will recover eventually, will they recover better without any stress for their spawning months? On a brighter note I saw no sapro fish last season, Anyone else ?? I must be fishin shitty because I didn't see many brown trout last season. I'm happy to hear & see a few this winter. Treat em nice ! -
2015 Proposed Bow River Changes
eagleflyfisher replied to jasonvilly's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
What does that mean exactly , hit a peak cycle then collapsed. They populated well, survived, thrived, the river was bursting with them so Mother Nature killed them off with sapro ? I saw them checking on the whitefish this fall. I wasnt aware there were in peril, doesn't mean I don't care just didn't know. If laying off the brown trout for 2 months to let them reproduce helps them make a come back then I'm all for it. What science is ther that says leaving them alone won't help. I was there for the highwood stats saying little or no effect from catch & release but the rainbows were never in trouble from decreased numbers. So fill me in Greg, I don't think pegging people with " so they can feel good about themselves " isnt really accurate. BTW is saw smaller schools of whites with Sapro 2 years ago, is this a case of that peak cycle theory ? -
Thanks for the tips, you know you've caught fish when the clickers worn out! Mike had a tand in there that someone drove over with their car, be a good belt buckle or hang it around your neck.

Went for a shop today hitting up the new shop way up north calgary. Not sure if your allowed to say names but a big shout out too Mike D . Like the store & some good candy in there to browse. Wanted to get a reel for a new streamer rig I am putting together. Looked @ several in the size wanted from 150-600 plus. Nothing really grabbing me, wanted a fairly large arbour for some decent line p/u. Anyhow mike put me onto a relatively new brand designed by a top class machinist who has decades of reel making under his belt. 3 Tand is the name . Very impressed with the tolerances , they can't be any better, the drag is completely sealed and a great range. Rubber on the bottom of the foot for no slippage. Bunch of other cool features too, best of all just over $200 for a fully machined reel. Anyhow if anyone is shopping it's one too consider. Oh ya won reel of the year 2014.

I'm in the same boat, I have used the old orvis mid ankle, felt bottom with a short neo sock.they were ok. Looked at some different sandles but don't want mud etc coming in through the sides. Typically go with the simms neo socks and wading boots. These are good but heavy , hot and must wash after use or they get smelly. Have heard river sheds were ok,. Light, durable easy on & off would be great.

Here's a bit of an embarrassing one for you. A few years back a friend @ I were on the crow in march. We buzzed around hole to hole taking a break midday for lunch. We packed up & headed to the next spot. Gearing up realized I somehow misplaced my favorite fingerless gloves. Bummer, I couldn't find anywhere. That's ok, you go fish I'm driving back to where we were & having a quick look. I'll catch up I said. Back to the spot, no gloves. Ok I'll retrace my steps back where we fished. I'm all alone, know one but my partner knows where I am. I'm creeping along an icy back just about the water, the path is a Tangle of branches , logs etc.. In a heartbeat my feet go out from under me & I hit the ground full force. I land front down and immediately feel a searing heat down in my groin region. I managed to fall on a chewed to a sharp point by a beaver, thick willow branch. It punctured my waders through the crotch , slicing my left nut ball slightly then pounding and thank cripes stopping into the side of my thigh right where your big artery is ! Later resulting in a bruise the size of a grapefruit. I lay there in horror afraid to reach down and check my business. My hand comes up with blood on it, I take an inspection now and determine I am ok and incredibly lucky. I layed there thinking if I had bled out. Returning to find my friend, no gloves, pride shattered, nothing but laughter & ridicule came from my friend. If you read this you know who you are! Much later in the day I found my gloves all the way down the pant legs of my waders. Sorry if anyone is offended by this post,I just wanted to show how quick things can go wrong.

About 10 years ago me and my buddy Peter & Gord the Hoover went pike fishing out too badger . 30 k winds not great but we went anyway. Flogged around for hours and kept an eye on the skyline. Bluebird day with a belt of brown we could see way way off in distance. The wind held strong & the belt of brown came closer. It came to the point that the belt was coming closer and we made a full out run back the launch. By the time we made it the belt was on us with a large funnel cloud bearing down. The lake was full of upturned boats & we could only see brown. The funnel centered on my truck and hammered us with unbelievable power ! I seem to involve my self in all sorts of bad weather(decisions) and I'm still here! I know you guys have seen a bunch of different situations.... Lets hear about them. I don't care if its a bear up your ass, running from an electrical storm, tornado, rain, high water, boat flying off your trailer, whatever ...it's a long winter lets hear it.

Getting bored and restless recovering from a small surgery and it got me thinking, what are some of the less than really needed things you've bought as the result of being a fly fisherman or fisherman for that matter? What have you told yourself , you know well... I'm into this.. and if I had this.... well I think... It would be pretty good? I'll start. I've always thought wind & flyfishing don't mix, cursed it every time it blew a hurricane, you know you never say the W word! So I went out and bought an anemometer, saw it on myth busters you know one of those gadgets that measures wind speed. I figured some how that if I knew what speed the wind was blowing..... you know... It would be better? I've got all sorts of useless crap collecting dust as a result of this hobby . What have you got ?

I've never tried the chest mount. I use a head mount, I figured what I was looking at the camera was looking at. I've got the first generation and wish I had a newer model with remote. A lot of feedback is heard on playback when you toggle through the menu. Great for pike fishing , usually take a pole & either get it in the air above if there's lots of fish & it's clear or some face to face underwater action.
