  1. Why do peaple assume that just because beginners can catch fish nymphing is easy?Just because it works so good dosn"t mean it dosn't take skill to be any good at it.
  2. It was in the water a bit but it didnt matter.Unfortunatlly he took the fly (#6 woolly bugger) deep and bled out.It sucks that I killed the biggest brown i've ever caught. In the picture you can see that his eye isn't looking down like fish that are alive.I gave it to a nice couple who owned a hotel I was staying at when I was waiting for my lost luggage.I caught him at about 4a.m. it was 29 inches and 11 lbs.
  3. I just got back from my trip to new zealand. It was a tough trip numbers wise with the fish mostly handing my ass to me but this one helped ease the pain.
  4. how many fish did you see? I hear they are few and far between. One buddy said the locals eat the trout if they can catch them so you need to be on private land with private access. The answer to your question is it depends. In the lower mataura (famous river,no secret here),there are so many fish you can blind fish and catch up to 20 18-22 inch browns a day. Most rivers have from about 10-40 fish per kilometer though. You'll usually see about 10-25 fish a day and fish to about half.A good day will see you catch about 3-8 fish.Ther's lots of good fishing with easy road or foot access.(I've only fished the south island, not the north)In most of the big fish lakes and rivers that get hit hard the fish can get really hard to catch. That's why i started night fishing.I'd flail a woolly bugger on 15lb tippet for hours on end.Just when i'd think i should get my head examined for beeing out there some monster would eat my fly.The funny thing is it's the most boring way to fish until somthing happens. I'd recomend n.z. to anyone.I go before christmas during their spring. The fish are a little less bombed up then.Alot of peaple go from jan-mar.The weather is ussually better then but there is more preasure too.Its an easy place to rent or buy a car and do it yourself.
  5. Here's a few pictures from my December trip to the South Isaland. The last is my biggest Brown ever- 10 1/4 lbs (28 1/2 inches)
  6. Thanks for the replies guys. Gary, in answer to your question yes I did weigh it I have a weigh net, it was 27 inches long. The other fish were 25- 27 inches long they just weren't as fat.
  7. Here's some pictures from my mid November to mid December trip to New Zealand. I obviously did some night fishing. The last fish was 10 lbs, the biggest brown I've ever caught in New Zealand(or anywhere else for that matter!)
  8. Hey Glenbow Were you in Gore at all during your trip. The reason I ask is that when I stayed in the hostle in Gore in November the lady who owned it told me that a guy named Glen from Calgary the week before. When I got home form my trip I saw your pictures and wondered if it was you. Brutis
  9. 7lb brown caught on a streamer. 8lb brown caught on an elk hair caddis late at night.
