ÜberFly
Call me nieve, but is there a black market for used tailgates?
Brunsie
Peter A couple of years ago, they busted a guy in Thornhill with about 35 tail gates in his garage. Apparently they're worth quite a bit on the "black market" Later Bk
SilverDoctor
Yep I lock mine religiously after my neighbor lost his a few years ago. Crooks will grab anything that isn't tied down.

Taco
I've had front driveshafts stolen but never a tailgate..... but then again the tailgates on my trucks are soon beat to bejesus by ricochetin' rocks.

fishinglibin
Tail Gate theft has been big for a while now. Price out a tailgate, you will be surprised how expensive they are. I always keep mine locked but based on the original post, his was also locked. Locks only keep out nice people.
Swede
well think about it they've turned 40 dollar parts into 500 dollar parts over the last 20 years i guess people would steal them takes what 20 seconds to take a tailgate off a truck. 500 bucks to replace my driver side mirror. fricken ridiculous. BigFoamy
was in edmonton this weekend. all the cars at the hotel got broke into, took everything, even the owners manual.
Claire
I also have heard that tailgates are hot item on the crooks list. It could be all the electronics especially if you have a backup camera etc.
TheMuddler
yeah it will cost roughly 2600 bucks with all parts and labor, i would believe any of the more recent models of trucks esp ones with a camera and all the fancy stuff would only be more. Taco
Backing into a gatepost with the tailgate down should alleviate the tailgate theft problem, done that once or twice. My father's specialty was unhooking a gooseneck horsetrailer and driving off forgetting to open the tailgate. Thieves seldom want a tailgate with a 6" ding or bow..
murray
Oh great, now I gotta get me a goose neck trailer. Where will it end?

Yeah it's not uncommon, I bought a truck off the company I work for, the tailgate got lifted by some clown prior... Not easy or cheap to replace thats for sure. pepper
The tailgate was stolen from our Ford Ranger several years ago while it was parked at the Fish Creek boat launch. We were told by Ford dealerships at that time that tailgates that have back up cameras in them were most at risk. (Ours did not have a camera)
Weedy1
There's a simple explanation for all of this. It's how a Calgarian finds a piece of tail.
