  1. Great story! I fondly remember my trip up there with Troutlover, RickR, VillyJ, Uber and his wife. It was a great hike and even better fishing!
  2. I use these boxes. Have three of them and love them. One big one for dries and two others for my big and small nymphs. https://umpqua.com/products/accessories/boxes/upg-fly-box
  3. Jim and Lynda McLennan offer classes for both beginner and experienced fly fishers. Lynda even has classes specifically for women. I took Jim's introductory fly fishing class and it was just amazing. I am sure there are plenty of fly shops out there who offer classes that are just as good/informative. I just have personal experience with Jim's classes. You can find out what you need to know here: http://www.mclennanflyfishing.com/
  4. Well done Rick. Congrats to you and the Schlumberger Team for raising so much for such a good cause!
  5. Totally looking forward to it! Just need to know what channel(s) it will be on!
  6. Sounds like a beauty way to spend a Sunday. Good for you.
  7. It was interesting to read about how "waders always have the right of way" This must be an unknown rule if I go by the numerous amount of times I have had drift boats float right on by, fishing the same water I am, and not only that, but close enough to the point that I could actually hit the rower in the side of the head with a simple cast. Some drifters make a wide bearth, and even have their "clients" pull out their lines, or at least have them cast out the opposite end to get their lines out of my water. Sadly, most don't give a *hit and just feel they can fish wherever they want cause they're in a boat.
  8. I took my kids there too last summer. I fly fished and they spin cast. I was the only one who caught anything. Had my kids reel them in though. Was fun.
  9. I was at Fish Tales on the weekend and had a peek at a couple of kids outfits they had. The reddington package was $120 with a 8'0" 5/6wt 2 pc. complete with rod, reel, backing, line and leader. TFO has the same thing for $150. Thinking about picking one up for my 8 year old who I took out to practice casting on the weekend. If he continues to show interest, then I will make the plunge and get him some gear.
  10. Dear lord, why did the guy try to "grab him"? No wonder he was bitten several times. Would it be appropriate to categorize this as a Darwin Award?
  11. I am pretty sure it was right around this time of year that I bought it from Home Dopey, so keep an eye out for flyers with the same sale. Pretty sure they offer it every year. Darrin
  12. I have noticed more and more grills are going to stainless steel grates as opposed to good old fashioned cast iron. The Broil Mate that I picked up has the cast iron, and I haven't had any issues with it. Stainless steel, I've heard, is prone to warping when starting the bbq in cold temperatures. And if you're like me, a little minus 20 weather on a January afternoon isn't going to stop you from that steak you're craving. That said, I really can't see cast iron being any less susceptible to warping from heat changes, so I am not sure how sound that stainless steel theory is. I read a lot of online reviews about the Broil Mate before we finally decided on it. It was down to that or another brand we saw at canadian tire. The deciding factor, for the most part, was the built in North America (US) and the fact they were doing free assembly and a free propane tank at the time. Seemed like a good deal, so we went for it. A TAD more than we initially thought we were spending, but I couldn't be happier. If there was only one thing that I could change about it, would be more storage underneath or on the doors. Other than that, happy as a pig in *hit.....so to speak
  13. Black Ant, What's your budget? Lots of guys are recommending Weber, etc, and if you're like me, you live on a tight budget. I, for one, can't justify spending $500 or more on a bbq. I would have to cook every meal, every day on the barbecue to justify $1000 on a charcoal grill. I am sure the food tastes great and all, and I am sure that it does provide a unique cooking experience. But as a tool that I use (not as much as I would like to, mind you) on occasion, it's hard to throw that kind of cash at it. What I looked for was something north american made, with good reviews and quality parts with decent cooking space. Most bbq's that we found were made in China, which is where my last bbq was and it lasted +/- 5 years, which isn't great. Barbecues Galore is a great place to see a lot of barbecues at a lot of different price ranges as well and the service was spectacular. If you want to spend a lot of money on a barbecue, then they are the guys to talk to. I ended up getting a Broil Mate from Home Depot for about $350 - $400 which has so far been spectacular. Even cooking, gets hot as hades, even on low setting, and comes with a side burner if needed. I have no issues after two years with it so far and look forward to many more. We have the propane model, but there was a natural gas model available as well for an extra $50 or something silly like that. My two cents.
  14. I have had five different TFO rods since I started fly fishing. I can count on one hand how many times they have broken. Once. And that was the very tip on the first rod set up I purchased, while it was still in the tube, before it even saw water. Never had any of my TFO's break since then. *knock on wood*. My Orivs rod broke twice. In the same season. From fishing. Two different sections on two different rods as the first time they replaced it with a brand new rod. My Sage launch also broke while fishing. Could just be me, but it seems to me that my TFO's have held up just was well, if not better, than some of the other rods that I have had. Wouldn't qualify that as "insane"
  15. Hey Brent, I work over at Honda West here in town. Work in sales, but if you want to get a quote from the other guys, send me a PM, I'll see what I can get done for ya! Darrin
  16. My first fly rod was a 9'0" 5wt 2 pc Signature series rod and I loved it. So much in fact I bought a second, then a third and eventually a fourth. Three of them were the signature series rods, the latest is an 8'6" 5wt BVK that I use for dries on the Bow. I love them. I have a Sage as well, and an Orvis as my go to nymphing rod, and a 10'0" 7wt custom rod I used for streamer fishing. I have never had an issue with the TFOs nor understood the rep they have about being cheap rods. My best guess is "mass produced-korean made-machine assembled" thing people tag on them. I have never had an issue with the performance of any of them and am planning on buying another BVK to use as a small stream rod. Love them. Will never say anything bad about them.
  17. I have the Orvis Access on a couple of my rods. Gotta say, I love the darn thing. Plenty of reel for not a lot of coin.
  18. While you're at the Fly Shop, be sure to pick up a copy of the Fishing Regulations as they not only share the regulations on all the streams, but do show some "maps" as to where the rivers are. You can also pick up a copy of the 2014 Fishing Guide that will give you more detailed maps and information on local streams and general regulations. If you are looking for a "general direction" of travel.......south.
