  1. My hint, always slow down. Fish everything. You can always row out when it's dark... Stick to the main channel if you're unsure about what is floatable (and right now, most back channels are not), park your boat at the bottom of channels and walk back up.
  2. All good. Plus I'm out of the fishing industry, so what the hell do I bitch about! Back on topic, I'm a bit surprised that the government doesn't pay some kid to double check all the regs. Pretty easy job for someone to do in a week of work..
  3. You know me Pete, I'm 100% for having the guiding regulated, including how many folks and what rivers/lakes are acceptable. Would be interesting to see what the take would be regarding species such as pure westslopes.
  4. I'll throw this out there.. Is it right to be guiding, therefore increasing pressure, for pure strains? Just a question, no judgement
  5. Battle scars. Personally, and I know it's a new boat, but hold off till the end of the season. Guaranteed you'll smack a bit more gel coat and fiberglass off with how low the water is likely going to be this year.
  6. Also most people don't want to admit they screwed up if they dropped $2k on a boat. As well, most folks have no tried more then one. I have a scadden xx, and like it, but it's a bit big for my common use. Was nice for two people on the Bulkley last fall
  7. Haven't done the inspection, but wish we had the same rules here!
  8. Jeez, whoever did the regs this year seems to be having some issues.. From the website: "In case of a discrepancy between the information presented in this on-line version of the guide and the official printed (hardcopy) version, the official printed version shall have precedence."
  9. You sure you're getting free shipping? The shipping on the things gets a bit insane and a bit cost prohibitive
  10. Your biggest handicap is going to be using a gopro, it's not going to give you enough options while out in the world to be able to get exactly what you want, so you'll be spending a lot more time editing than if you had the ability to change settings while taking photos. Get an entry level SLR, or used one, and a wide angle lens and you'll find yourself having a hell of a lot easier getting your photos to be what you thought they looked like in person.
  11. Have you called the fly shops? I know CPs used to carry the Brodin Ghost Net as a bag
  12. Jimmy likes to fish
  13. Not Doubtful, there's too many of them not to have some overlap...
  14. Peter, I'd be more curious about who said they need a guide without ever having the guy on the river. However, this is hardly unheard of. So many guys buy a boat and decide that they're 'the deal'. Worse is the 'outfitters' that employe them with that lack of experience. There are virtually no requirements, it is completely self regulated. Hell, I know of a least one person who became a guide after three days behind the drift boat oars but could talk a good game... I want to know who the outfitter is so I can point a big ol keep away sign...
  15. Alberta should have the ability to do In-Season changes like Bc. Bit silly that a reg can't be changed just due to a publication date
  16. Not sure why they wouldn't just do a c&r regulation based on species until they're a little more established.
  17. variety is the spice of life
  18. Actually motivate me to go lake fishing for once if it happens
  19. What time of year are you talking about? The Missouri is a quick trip and fishes well in March through December
  20. Skeena steelhead are all wild, typically bigger, and are also remarkably accesible to dry flies, which is pretty rare. There is a reason that many guys go to BC from Idaho.. The real advantage with a spey rod, is that you're casting all day long. I know a few fellows that still do the single hand rod, and still do very well, however are typically pretty damn wornout from fishing. You don't need a spey to be hitting the middle of the river, and typically if you're fishing all the way out, you're going to be missing a lot of fish that are up close. I've caught a lot of steelhead with just the sink-tip out the top of the rod. However, you will note that 90% of the guys are using spey rods, with our without a jet. You'll be surprised by how few people are dedicated walk and waders in that region during prime time. I'd say the vast majority have a watercraft of some sort. Spey rods are helpful in my mind for: a) ease of getting distance for people who don't have a strong single hand casting, especially with big tips and flies way easier mending. The extra ~3-4 feet make a LOT of difference. Most of the steelhead game comes on how well you can swing a fly, and spey rods just tend to do it a little better when you're doing long casts with a lot of different currents. c) way easier to fish on day 6 of a 2 week trip then a single hander. A 9 weight single hander will break you down pretty quickly d) easier to use when you're fishing out of the deep rough. I'd also say that the vast majority of guys that are up there are fishing a lot heavier then they need to, which a spey rod does a lot easier than a single hander. Note that with your jet, the Smithers area is going to be a better bet for fall fishing. That shaves off 2.5 hours off the drive anyway. You can always go hunting as well up there, some very good birding opportunities from what I've heard. Jarrod, feel free to PM me for more info, I've spent a pretty good chunk of time up there in the last 6 years.
  21. For those wondering, new regs mentioned in other thread (fall closure, etc) didn't get public consultation in time to get into effect. Let's hope they get to it this year
  22. Phil Rowley is also hosting a seminar at Country Pleasures on the 28th. You won't find a better lake learning opportunity in calgary, especially for free For Pike, start as soon as you can once the season reopens in May
  23. They are discontinued models. Only reason they're at Costco
  24. i have two of them. they're great.
  25. Unless the river is out due to a snow and melt event (or rain), end of April can be very good. Id suggest contacting a shop for more info. Support local!
