  1. If what the Bow has been in the last three-five years is thriving, we're in trouble.
  2. How about use their resources to do some habitat rehab and back channel reestablishment, use their connections to pressure the government for more controls on the dam management, lock up more areas for access, provide bank rehabilitation ideas along with cows and fish, rather then using riprap. Use their resources to do research on the affects of angling over spawning fish, etc etc. Shall I continue? TU does a lot of good, but if you compare what the Bow River chapter does, compared to some of the ones in Eastern Canada, or the states, it's a bit sad. Since when do our trout downstream of Policemens look ANY different then Livingstone cutts? Since when is the pressure distributed 50/50 from glenmore to deerfoot (approximately 20km), compared to the ~50 km downstream of the bridge? That's laughable. If anything, it calls for more access down river, not keeping the limited amount available. If there are that many people fishing the city section during those two months, then even more of a case to close it Anyone floating glenmore to 22 in October or November is likely doing so to chase the spawning brown trout anyway... Or they don't have enough background knowledge to know any better.
  3. Makes it easy, doesn't it Rick?!
  4. The 9' footer will help if you're planning on doing a bit of light nymphing. the 8'6" will be better if just doing a dry rod. Personally, unless I'm in a boat, I'm only carrying one stick, so it's going to be my 9' 5 weight. Carrying two rods is too much work to be much fun. And yes, my quiver includes pretty well everything from 3-8
  5. How I love the voice of reason. For those that want dam changes or habitat rehab, perhaps it's time that everyone starts pressuring TU to do something... They sure make a lot of money at their dinners, but do we ever see a true benefit back to the resource?
  6. So I guess we should reopen all the rainbow trout streams, since the science is so conclusive
  7. So, I guess the science regarding the impact of C&R on fish just doesn't count? Where is the exhaustive study on whitefish? I see the only issue with this reg, is that it'll keep the 'old anglers' away from picking on the old fish... i don't see how you can ever see this reg as something that will damage the fishery
  8. There is no information on the Bow river for the damage that indicates one way or the other for Brown trout. So, in the lack of good science, we should leave it unchanged? How well has that worked out previously? The fact of the matter is, there is no science on the Bow. Do we really want to wait another 10 years to get that science to find out we were too late? You'll notice that the Proposed reg also includes a zero fish limit, including whitefish, so yes they're being noticed.
  9. I have a friend with a lo pro aluminum (hyde) and kicker that he'd likely sell. PM me and i can try and connect you.
  10. If you're looking at the bow as a big river, you're doing it wrong
  11. I am encouraged by the people who are having a positive response to this. Considering I floated the idea (though to a longer time extent) a few years back and was pretty well NIMBY'd out of the place. Maybe a few more of us started to feel a bit of a fishery switch in the city last year. It sure wasn't the Bow of old.
  12. It sounds like it's a closure from bearspaw to highway 2. Will advise more when I hear from ESRD
  13. I've seen a few, but certainly not like the city section. I agree, close it from Deerfoot extender up. I followed up with ESRD for more info but haven't heard back. Seems that this indicated there was to be a public response period, but I don't remember seeing one.
  14. Anyone in the guiding industry with some credibility will be standing up and cheering for it. While not able to show the direct correlation, I would be hard pressed to find a guide who was happy about the Sapro issue the last few years..
  15. Wow. Can't say I'm anything but surprised considering the general attitude towards closing the river in the fall... Glad to see it happening. Also surprised they're going to go full river closure
  16. better yet, bumping a 2 month old bump to 'get this straight' Really, all the Bow needs is more boat launches. Our infrastructure for fishing is laughable. If you could throw a boat in at 17th ave, douglasdale, cottonwood, it would open so much river and different floats up, and move people around. Our main issue is that for the vast majority of anglers, is that police to mac is the only real stretch that they'll fish, therefore condensing all the anglers. Less of an issue, as it is something that makes me scratch my head, is the jet boaters that use there jets to hang out with the drifters all day... I don't think i'd fish a day above mack if i was under power, and i'd spend many many days below carseland.
  17. dear lord...size 2/0s for trout? Are you trying to catch them, or brain them so they are easier to land? Actually thinking to yourself that 'you're not doing considerable damage with mortality' due to the population size of the Bow as a reason to use a 2/0 is repulsive. For trout I'd suggest size 4 and smaller as the trailer. This is more then enough for ALL trout, regardless of 'chasing the big guys'. There is really no need to be fishing double hooks. If you're so hard pressed to land a fish, technique is going to do a lot more for you then adding more pointy bits. I'll certainly play the precautionary principle card on this one. I use mustad 3407 DT for shanks. Cut the hook off, and use a small stinger. You can get these in pretty well any size, so if you're tying a large fly, just go to a bigger 3407 (and cut off the hook..). The point of a stinger is that you have a small hook shank, such that it is harder to become a lever to pop out of the fish. Big Dirty's fly looks plenty capable, and isn't of ridiculous gape size.
  18. My buddy BBT is a bit of a hack...
  19. Right tool for the right job...I have 2 speys, a switch, and 5 single hands. You won't see me breaking out any of the speys/switches unless i'm on the west coast
  20. Landing a size 18 softly is a different story then delivering a size 18 softly to a dinner plate sized target at 30-40 feet, without frightening the fish.. The fact of the matter is that a switch or two handed rod won't do virtually everything. Including those fish tipping on tricos at 100 feet in the middle of the river...........
  21. I'd suggest finding a pair of Simms riversheds, and size them down to fit right without a wafer. Bring what you'd normally wear to a fly shop and figure it out. Could be a bit tough to go no neoprene just due to the width of wading boots
  22. I'd suggest skipping the boots and going with a Simms sandal, but that's just me
  23. Ya I have a gopro as well. Hasn't been out of my pack in a year
  24. What rod? What are you planning on using it for? Need lots more info to dial it in for ya
