I think the biggest issue people have for slack is trying to be too far away. Most Bow River fish will let you within 10 feet if you move slow enough. Slack is easy to come by when you're casting less than 30 feet.

A couple years ago we had a pretty similar runoff. Typically it's rain that gives us the biggest push, not just snow melt. 2005 and 2013 were later in June. Looks like most of the snow is gone according to the chars. If we don't get any huge rain we'll likely have an abbreviated runoff

I'd say it's more about flows then anything. It was fishing as good as it gets in early April, until that first big flow change hit. Since then, it's been increasing, however hardly consistenly. rare to see a spring with this much bouncing in flows. Probably going to be our future in the spring as Transalta worries about flow/flood management with the city breathing down their neck. Fish crave consistency. Hope we get it post runoff

We actually aren't that low for snow, and are very similar in conditions to what preceded the 2005 floods. It's all about rain...

I wouldn't be worried about already tied flies. Biggest concern would be an interested border agent who wants to talk fishing for too long.

You should always wash your boat before leaving the country. Yes they will be picky about mud on it (and rightfully so). Really, you should wash it after fishing at any time and allow it to dry. Not a huge deal if it's limited to one waterbody, but if you're fishing more than one, you should be washing it and letting dry between. I never once had them look at flies or anything. Have never even been asked if I'm bringing my own fishing equipment or not. Not sure about fly tying equipment, but again, have never even been asked. I wouldn't bring anything particularly special, just incase they do decide they want to keep it.

More important is your reel. The first saltwater fish you catch will blow your mind. Drags a beautiful thing, especially sealed.

Saits not much of a wind-blown distance away. Watch how high the swallows are feeding sometime and you'll realize just how far these bugs can go with a good updraft and wind

While concerned a bit, I feel that the younger folk are going to be a lot more involved, and be a hell of a lot more likely to take a stance on something like the environment (e.g., random camping, logging practices, etc) than the old boys who were afraid of the lobby groups.

I'm a bit of a brute force guy, and just use a 4 foot section 25 lb maxima, Albright'd to a 4 foot section of 80lb fluoro. They're pike, they don't care about presentation

Comparing a Helios 2 to a dancraft is a bit of a stretch there Peter.. If you have tried the Helios 2, and have the funds, then Id be all over that rod. I've fished them for trout and even got my first Permit on one. They're incredible rods. I think the tip flex in a 6 or 7 would be an ideal streamer rod...
