  1. hey dustin, nice fish and your inbox is full!

    Quick Question!

Sure there's some cutty in that fish, but there is pretty well guarenteed some rainbow genetics. This time of year, all of them are dressed up for the big dance. Perty fish either way I'd be reluctant to call that a 'generic' bow river cutbow..that thing makes most of the bow river rainbow/cuttys/cutbows/cuttybrownbows look pretty bland
  3. Guess you want the right to not wear a seatbelt, drive after a few drinks, go 200 km/hr on the road, fish 9 flies at once, own a bazooka etc etc... .Regulations work that way. Get over it. Re-read the post. I quoted a review paper that mentioned alberta, and then mentioned seperate studies, all of them done before Alberta started the barbless regs..
  4. It's a dicey slope if you're worried about making income off these rivers, rather then being concerned about their protection... I quoted a review paper, that has referenced peer reviewed scientific papers...go read them if you want this information, instead of assuming that they have bad science. Not once did i say it was gospel, however if we're going to keep quoting science as something that proves one thing, should probably also show the other side of the story. Heres the same sentence without the mention of Alberta or Manitoba..doesn't change the content: and that's enough for me on this subject
  5. Dave, you keep quoting the science, so here's some. Casselman, S. J. 2005. Catch-and-release angling: a review with guidelines for proper fish handling practices. Fish & Wildlife Branch. OntarioMinistry of Natural Resources. Peterborough, Ontario. 26 p And yes, i can find reports that show the opposite. However, shouldn't fisheries management follow the basic theory of the precautionary principle?
  6. Clive, with the barbless law, it is still up to the discretion of the CO on who he approaches. I've had numerous encounters while fishing where the CO gives me a wave and keeps driving by..I don't see the barbless reg as increase the amount of stops at all, but it does give the CO opportunity to go investigate if he feels it necessary... As you stated, the CO did that when barbs were banned. Why would the reintroduction of the ban suddenly change their discretion on who to check?
  7. Clive, I think that the barbless law is a good thing for enforcement, as it gives every CO an opportunity to go investigate someone. I also highly HIGHLY doubt any CO's are actively pursuing guys to check for barbs, rather then looking for larger offences. I'm pretty sure they are worrying about the more important stuff as possible
  8. I'd disagree that it's not biological, as the science behind it seems a bit skewed (would love a link to the 'definitive' study). When you're testing for increased mortality, but using people who are very proficient at removing barbed hooks, you won't notice a significant difference. However, the number of anglers who have never removed a barbed hook and struggle with a fish for minutes out in the air would almost certaintly have a significant difference in mortality rates (just look at how mortality correlates with time out of water). Barbless isn't going to fix inexperience and the urge to take another photo of a stereotypical trout, but it wont hurt... Barbless doesn't negatively effect fish more than barbed, while barbed may just. Isn't that reason enough?
  9. you mean, other then the walmart that's in terrace?
  10. Was surprised by the lack of concern at the border this past weekend when bringing by boat back from Montana after fishing on the Mo. Not one question about if it was cleaned, or an inspection to make sure it was (and yes, it was)... Seems like Wyoming has started to figure it out http://www.wyomingnews.com/articles/2013/04/02/news/20local_04-02-13.txt
  11. I would suggest if anyone does see anyone doing something like it, try to get photos and/or video.
  12. Hope you did more then just watch, and took note of their licence plates etc. It is a federal offence to harm or destroy fishery habitat. (Harps can probably go into this more then any of us on here)..
  13. BRS posted a thing on FB, Mac has ~8 feet of ice.. Guess we're going to have a normal spring for once
  14. Apply, don't push so hard that it falls apart!
  15. http://www.countrypleasures.com/store/contents/en-ca/p684.html Use the grey side for cleaning the line, the other side for application of the line goo
  16. I've used about every fly line out there from the big manufacturers (Rio, Airflo, SA, Orvis), and kept ending back up at the Sharkskin as the go to. However, I have to say that the new Orvis 3D (which is made by SA anyway, so really it's a sharkskin with a different taper) may well be the most versatile and best line i've ever had.

    Fly Kit

deer is generally easier to work with
  18. That post was directed at all boat users (especially new ones) on the river as a way to help stop confrontation. Perhaps you mistook the part about placing the boat on the bank. By this, i mean take the boat down to the launch, and place it out of the way (such as on the bank beside the launch). Drift boats don't have the ability to be put on the bank, but we do have the ability to walk the boat downstream (other then policemens) to get it out of the way. Use the launch all you want, but inflating your pontoon, getting your oars right, setting up fly rods, etc etc IN the launch is unnecessary (and yes there are the drift boaters that do this too, they're not excused either). I won't defend most drift boat owners. However, I know that i have my vehicle in and out of the launch and my boat gone in the time it takes me to get my vehicle parked and walk back. I also ensure that my boat is not blocking other access. This cannot be said about all 'encounters' I had last year with pontoon and drift boats. I'd also have a caveat that I also own and use a raft on the Bow, so it's not exactly a one sided view. yes. Glenmore is easily launchable from below the main launch. Policemens is very easy if you launch at the very very west edge of the parking lot. Realistically, 22x would probably be the most difficult to put-in without use of the launch.
  19. I'll just throw this out there for all the pontooners and boat users(new and old). Please refrain from inflating, gearing up, setting up fly rods, tying on flies, etc etc in the boat launch. If you must put in at the boat launch, then the very last thing you should do is take the boat down into the water. Pontoons have the ability to be placed on the bank while drift boats cannot, please respect your fellow river users Make everyone's life easier! And at the end of the day, don't leave your boat dead center in the launch when you go to get your vehicle. Again, this applies to everyone
  20. There are plenty of shops in the city that should get your attendance before Bass Pro, and will switch a line without you having to buy a new one, including the ones that support this site (which Bass Pro does not) Support local, not the Walmart of the Fishin world.
  21. Yup. The amount of fish I've seen on the bow get absolutely man handled because joe guy forgot his forceps is appalling. And I guess we won't have to worry about those cutthroat around the Oldman to ever have mandibles anymore! Screw the science (which is highly skewed), help the fish. Hell, this reg was at least good in that it gave every CO a reason to come check what people were doing.
  22. North Bow Lodge. Only on-river accomodation on the Lower Bow. 10 minutes from 3 launches (plus the one at the lodge), half an hour to every launch. Guides can be done through them. If i was going to pay for someone to row me around, there is no one i'd rather have do it then George Beasley (who stays down there)
  23. Some smart ass kid went swimming in his felts last week as he's been to lazy to get new boots! Vibram's rock
