No More Felt Soled Boots In The Rockies !
bcubed replied to McLeod's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Likely the fisheries act issue. Same with why Alberta can't mandate a no-felt (or no barbed hooks) until they get the AB Fisheries Act changed -

...how is this topic getting out of hand? A very simple question was asked and answered. How you possibly compare multiple backhoes and rock trucks, to pouring of coffee into the water is beyond me. I appreciate that you're invested in this project due to wanting to get additional boat launches in town, and Bow River Trout needs the assistance of the kayak lobby, yet you could care less about the impact on populations? Would your approach and thoughts be different if you were losing fishing days to this in July? -

Don't think you're looking very hard. The far side is almost certainly an exceedance. I also do what Hydroman did as a living, and deal with the Water Act daily. I've read the Approval for this work.. If they are appropriately monitoring, then they will be vindicated if someone calls and compliance shows on site. Same can't be said if we cover our eyes and assume the best. -

I think he's speaking to the hoe being up to its tracks in the river... which isn't really appropriate (and was not behind isolation) -

Call it in, if they want to let them have free reign, then so be it, but call it in. Any time there is work inputting sediment into the river, someone should be calling it in as it is potentially a non-compliance to the Water Act and Compliance will only go to site if it is reported. Assuming they're in compliance is silly And this isn't about losing fishing days. I haven't even bought a license yet -

Let's be frank, an open window does not allow them to impact water quality without constraint. -

Technically, this is outside of the restricted activity period (April 5 to May 1 is the spring 'open' period), as the 'average' spawn happens after this. That certainly wasnt the case last year, as fish were spawning in Fish Creek the second week of April Like i said, if they are putting silt into the river, call it in to the 1-800-222-6514. They should not be blindly releasing sediment to the river, and if they are, if enough people call at least they'll know people are looking, and compliance will go to site. -

My first steelhead trip was to the Cowichan. Fished 5 days with 1 pull. One thing I did land was a rock, with a perfect hook-sized hole... man did that thing ever grab on and wake me up...Was quite the event pulling it in - The dead pelican that was at the bottom end of the bleachers, that i thought was a new rock.. - many beavers (not landed) -

I'd be hard pressed to see another NDP mandate, there was a lot of anger votes that went there way, that wont in the next election.. Hoping they at least realise that, and dont give easy-outs to the next party on things like the Castle. They're already backtracking a litle too far for me -

I didn't say I don't expect it there, but I also am not running the tests. I'll wait for positive results before committing to saying it's there or not.. -

For sure some are resistant, but as mentioned, we don't know where we are in this 'infection'. We could very well be at the very start of it, and we may see population-sized issues moving forward, or we may well have resistant strands of rainbows and we're 15 years in. Since we really dont know when it showed up, we really dont know what its going to do (or if it has done something in the past). We also have such poor fisheries-population knowledge, that it would be hard to draw a firm conclusion anyway that we're seeing an issue, without us directly observing a fish kill At the end of the day, managing the spread is going to be an important issue. They haven't found any trace of it in the Red Deer and Oldman drainages (so far..), but for how long? -

no one knows how long it's been in the province. It could have been here from day 1 that they stopped testing in the early 2000s, or it could have shown up in the last year or so. There is no simple way to go back to figure it out. Based off that, we don't know if they're resistant, or we just haven't been hit with a big population loss yet. Lots of variables, will be an interesting next five years. -

they don't have a way to implement barbless or even ban felts, because they've deferred that part of the AB Fisheries Act to the federal... -

I'm a-ok wth banning it, considering that random camping has been anything but down there (and I grew up random camping on the oldman and liv). Tent villages, RVs in place for years at a time... time to deal with it -
Or they spend inordinate amounts of time with a fish trying to get the one shot that will get them more likes... Been more then one of the 'instagram' famous people who have been watched screwing with a single fish for 10+ minutes at a time to get the 'right' one. Unfortunately, the 'likes' support the ego's (and potentially the bank accounts), and it becomes a self-enforcing cycle.
