  1. Well River users, here's your chance to speak up, instead of sitting on your hands and then complaining when things don't go 'your way'. Pretty excited to see them bring up Frenchmen's as an access point..that in addition to another one upstream of 22 would completely change our river and the way we could fish it. The NW guys get some love too. http://engage.calgary.ca/riveraccess
  2. or of a bull trout being gilled...
  3. Gotta ask (as i always do when this topic comes up), why do you want a spey/switch if you're primarily nymphing (which it seems that is what you're saying). Most guys have this vision of bombing an indie to the middle of the river, but in real life that is pretty unrealistic (and not necessary).
  4. Whitefish are broadcast spawners and don't build redds
  5. Wouldn't surprise me. The Mallard Point side channel was absolutely chocked full of redds last fall, and test redds in early october. Probably not a bad project in the future is signage showing how to ID redds, and to avoid them, especially in easier-accessed areas.
  6. Not a P. Biol yet (working on it). Marc has summed up really well the most of it. Unfortunately browns sure like to spawn in areas that people cross in, but that's the nature of shallow water they're spawning in.Back channels collect spawning fish, or sure did last year! You should expect to see results from the fall spawning survey from last year sometime soon, as well as an invite to the 2016 one coming out. Can learn a lot by attending that
  7. Couple seasons if you're lucky. My G4's are toast after 3 years of pretty good use. Take them to BC once and into devil's club territory and they're sieves in a week
  8. Except Stamper has more hair
  9. Think the point BC was trying to make, is that unless you're a qualified biologist, you probably shouldn't be the one making the call on culling fish cause they may have Whirling. The quote above is how you you're supposed to deal with all kept fish, not just ones you think may have WD.
  10. Woah there conspiracy theorist. They apparently only tested as a vet with parks noticed the fish and was able to get the testing done.
  11. It'll clean up. One of the funnier days I had guiding was with two gents who brought their gear rods as 'just in case the fly fishing sucks'. Think they put two casts out before they reeled in and fished little jigs all day. Cleaned house.. I'd skip the 5 of diamonds for something more streamer/jiggy like a rapala Be prepped to clean weeds all day long with it though, and dont fish trebles, definitely not needed
  12. Yikes, but not unexpected. People who are headed outside of the province should really be contemplating a second set of waders/boots, or doing one hell of a job cleaning everything before they go.
  13. those'll work for steelhead for sure. The nice thing about practicing with a dry is it allows you to tell what makes your fly speed up, and slow down, what a mend will do, how the angle of the cast changes what occurs 3/4 of the way through the swing, etc. Can learn a lot that you can then transfer to when you're fishing a tip
  14. Monger, It flows out of the lake and then hugs those hoodoo cliffs before a culvert further south then the Cascade power plant http://globalnews.ca/news/2903536/infectious-whirling-disease-found-in-fish-at-banffs-johnson-lake/
  15. Peter, east bank seems more suitable for a launch with the recent infrastructure that is going in place and is in the city limits. That West Bank is also outside bend and took an absolute wallop in the flood (as you know)
  16. Right in critical habitat for WSCT.. http://aep.alberta.ca/water/programs-and-services/2013-flood-recovery-programs/documents/WSCT-CriticalHabitatSouthMap-Oct-2014.pdf
  17. Glenmore is operational, 22x is operational, policemens is operational (if not a bit shitty), mackinnons, jansens, carseland.. I'm not trying to troll you, but we're at pretty well an equivalent place we were prior to the flood. That doesn't mean we're at the right number of launches (as we're not), but pointing a finger at the flood as a reason we should have more launches is short-sighted. We have been critically short of access for as long as people have been floating the thing, mostly as the city has taken a complete laissez-faire attitude towards them. hopefully this new strategy will change it. If we're going to be limited in what the city will approach, I'd much rather put a launch somewhere that will make the biggest overall difference, not one where it will simply add convenience to the day.
  18. Issue is that it is a fire boat launch, and CFD seems to think that giving users access to the river is just asking for more problems. I find it a bit unacceptable that a sizeable bit of money was spent on putting in that boat launch, but adequate parking (and no stakeholder engagement with the fishing community) was not provided to turn it into a public access. Im sure this one will be brought up in the river access strategy thing. Probably the easiest launch to get operational to the public by providing more parking spots and ensuring the launch isn't blocked if CFD needs in (doesn't seem to be an issue at Fish Creek)
  19. Which ramp are you specifically referring to.. Not a single public launch downstream of glenmore was lost. Provided the city was on board and had the money ready to go, you'd still be at least 6-12 months to get the design correct and to meet various regulatory requirements (water act, public lands act, navigation protection act, fisheries act). I understand you're keen, but there is due process to follow. The fact that the city is even looking at boat launches is miles ahead of where we were following the 2005 and 2013 floods.
  20. At worst its 20 minutes to drive all the way around. If 20 minutes is an inconvenience, you must really hate deerfoot There is no way we'd get support from the City with installing a launch at 194 (plus, the end of that road is still within Fish Creek PP) with the proximity to Fish Creek's launch. Convenient or otherwise, one planner will mention that it is 2 km or a 20 minute drive and the idea is dead. Pick your battles... I'd support a launch within the City upstream of deerfoot, in the case that Policemens get's nuked or shutdown due to safety in the future. plus with the development going in there, the city should be making the developers pay for that infrastructure
  21. we desperately need more launches downstream of policemens, between 22x and glenmore and upstream of glenmore. Not another one due to a bit of inconvenience caused by not being accessible on the east side of the river.. I agree we need more boat launches, but if we have a limited number that are going to get built, let's put them in spots that will spread traffic around and facilitate different sections being floated. I'm not sure if another 2 km of river for a launch at 194 is adding anything Getting a boat launch in the vicinity of the cottonwood golf course down to the cambite cliffs would completely change the river. 22 to there would be an amazing float, could even do there to Jansens for the highly motivated
  22. the GPX is a half size heavier (so say a 8.5 weight), which makes loading a rod easier, and therefore learn to cast easier
  23. learning curve will be less with an aggressive floating line, like a SA GPX.
