  1. no one knows how long it's been in the province. It could have been here from day 1 that they stopped testing in the early 2000s, or it could have shown up in the last year or so. There is no simple way to go back to figure it out. Based off that, we don't know if they're resistant, or we just haven't been hit with a big population loss yet. Lots of variables, will be an interesting next five years.
  2. The creek is frozen/dry currently according to another site. One thing going for it anyway
  3. Where's the actual plan?
  4. they don't have a way to implement barbless or even ban felts, because they've deferred that part of the AB Fisheries Act to the federal...
  5. I'm a-ok wth banning it, considering that random camping has been anything but down there (and I grew up random camping on the oldman and liv). Tent villages, RVs in place for years at a time... time to deal with it
  6. Or they spend inordinate amounts of time with a fish trying to get the one shot that will get them more likes... Been more then one of the 'instagram' famous people who have been watched screwing with a single fish for 10+ minutes at a time to get the 'right' one. Unfortunately, the 'likes' support the ego's (and potentially the bank accounts), and it becomes a self-enforcing cycle.
  7. Cause they're trying to keep the tourism up in the 150 year... good ol theme park preferences
  8. And should still be washing between trips, regardless of which set. Biggest thing is the mud that gets stuck on the bottom of wading boots. Lots of opportunity to transfer tubifex worms Also a learnt a couple new things, did you know if they check your boat on the highway and it has the plugs in (regardless if dry), you're getting a ticket
  9. Was at a meeting with AEP that the city hosted earlier this week. So far, it's only been found in the Bow and Bow Drainage proper, and anywhere that could be suspectible should be tested by April. The current advice is to Clean, Drain and Dry all gear, particularly waders. They HIGHLY recommended that everyone should have a 'Bow river' pair of waders/boots/etc, and a pair for elsewhere so you're not transferring. Everything else should be washed thoroughly with extremely hot water (80-90C). I'll be setting a pair of waders and boots aside as my Bow River set, until further notice, at a minimum.
  10. Can you push it a bit later? Hard to give you a firm idea of runoff, but any booking in June is pretty risky that you'll be in runoff. I'd suggest pushing at least to the first week of July if possible..
  11. It's probably in the oldman drainage..they just havent got the testing done down there yet. Red deer might be a tad bit safer just cause the rivers dont connect, but with the number of anglers in Calgary, and the vicinity to the Red Deer drainage, i'd suspect it's there as well
  12. "Inside the buffer zone, provincial acquaculture facilities and Class A fish farms will have to test fish for whirling disease" Perhaps they should have been doing this already...? Im unsure about the requirements for testing, but this seems like something that should have been done consistently since WD first showed its head in the states 20 years ago
  13. Lol that was like a cutthroat to a chubby Chernobyl!
  14. Figured they'd finally find the chromers down there.. they were picking on some seriously gross, falling apart, mid spawn fish for a few years That being said, chinooks on a fly rod are freaking phenomenal
  15. Doing it at a carwash is always better then your driveway, as if you do have something, it's not going straight into the river http://aep.alberta.ca/recreation-public-use/boating/clean-drain-dry-your-boat.aspx
  16. there has GOT to be a way that this doesn't get bumped to the top, everytime someone votes..right?
  17. Good point. I guess I should have noted that I did not size down, it's just noticeable! Feel like if it was recommended to drop a line size, they'd have it separated out on the RIO site
  18. I found that you can definitely feel it, particularly on casts that the head lays on the water for a little longer (say a snap-t, during the sweep). The line has enough sink to definitely add more load during that time. If you're just perry-poking or singles, then no difference. Similar to the different feeling between a weighted fly and unweighted. At minimum, you gotta get that cast off quicker before the line drops.
  19. Ya they're pretty skookum for chinook fishing to break through the fast chop in higher water, and to keep the fly down... Also feel that they give you a better connection to the fly
  20. Can you imagine the amount of a spill to get to 2.5% of an actual waterbody...
  21. Have fun going 10 k/hr up the elbow...
  22. Don't oversell it. Regulatory (Water Act) would be quite the achievement to get these in before the end of the Restricted Activity Period in September, considering zero design has been completed to date.
  23. How convenient that this video is out there...it's how i hold my line (and easier to explain then writing it!) Sage Fly Fish
