  1. Soooo a half week later, can we hear a little more of an accident analysis here? Same thing they do in mountains following an accident so future parties can learn from it.
  2. ya this is pretty damn strong. It holds saltwater fish all day, it will certainly do for trout Bron, i've always just added a nail knot when i see the loop starting to fail. Definitely have seen a lot more of the RIO loops fail, especially on gear that is extremely dependent on their loops (MOW tips, for example)
  3. Depends if you have the 'ez pull' anchor or not so you'll need twice as much. Think I'm running a 60 footer. Way rather have more then too little
  4. Biggest thing people seem to forget for ability to stop a boat and hold a boat is length of rope. More rope the way better it holds, and far less likely to float away on ya! Bit of a sneaky trick, if you need a new rope go to the Calgary Climbing Centre and ask for their used ropes... they'll sell you a dynamic rope for pretty cheap
  5. I'm out of country otherwise i would. My suggestion would be to talk to the landowner that has the road down to the river on the south side to get access. Easy enough to find on google maps. Also, seems that unless the engine is caught up on a tree, it's not going to take much to nudge that loose. Unfortunately it's not going to get any shallower unless you can flip it. I'd make sure you at minimum get a rope on it and attached to shore somewhere if you can't salvage it tomorrow. if that water comes up overnight it may well move on you, and if it heads down the right channel it's gonna get stuck in a tree or you may never see it again if it gets to the deep stuff. Oh and take it easy with the come-along if you use one. Lots of horror stories when those break
  6. Gotta ask... how... where did you flip it to end up there? It's at the hell on wheels bank. About dead centre in the river.
  7. Bleach does work, as does the quaternary ammonium, but it's far friendlier on your gear
  8. At some point it did spread, we do not know if thats now, or ten years ago. Regardless, there needs to be a concerted effort by the angling community to be proactive about cleaning before moving between watersheds moving forward. This is pretty obvious a human-transfer, regardless if the spread is now or 10 years+ ago, and we need to stop further spread if that is possible.
  9. Found in the Crow. http://www.inspection.gc.ca/animals/aquatic-animals/diseases/reportable/2017/alberta-2017/eng/1492020203162/1492020203648
  10. Likely the fisheries act issue. Same with why Alberta can't mandate a no-felt (or no barbed hooks) until they get the AB Fisheries Act changed
  11. ...how is this topic getting out of hand? A very simple question was asked and answered. How you possibly compare multiple backhoes and rock trucks, to pouring of coffee into the water is beyond me. I appreciate that you're invested in this project due to wanting to get additional boat launches in town, and Bow River Trout needs the assistance of the kayak lobby, yet you could care less about the impact on populations? Would your approach and thoughts be different if you were losing fishing days to this in July?
  12. That is typically a mitigation requirement for in stream work in AB
  13. Don't think you're looking very hard. The far side is almost certainly an exceedance. I also do what Hydroman did as a living, and deal with the Water Act daily. I've read the Approval for this work.. If they are appropriately monitoring, then they will be vindicated if someone calls and compliance shows on site. Same can't be said if we cover our eyes and assume the best.
  14. I think he's speaking to the hoe being up to its tracks in the river... which isn't really appropriate (and was not behind isolation)
  15. AEP spill line 1-800-222-6514
  16. Call it in, if they want to let them have free reign, then so be it, but call it in. Any time there is work inputting sediment into the river, someone should be calling it in as it is potentially a non-compliance to the Water Act and Compliance will only go to site if it is reported. Assuming they're in compliance is silly And this isn't about losing fishing days. I haven't even bought a license yet
  17. Let's be frank, an open window does not allow them to impact water quality without constraint.
  18. Oh and i managed to snag a cliff swallow with my fly line on a backcast at the CIL hole...he did not enjoy being dunked before i could get to him
  19. Technically, this is outside of the restricted activity period (April 5 to May 1 is the spring 'open' period), as the 'average' spawn happens after this. That certainly wasnt the case last year, as fish were spawning in Fish Creek the second week of April Like i said, if they are putting silt into the river, call it in to the 1-800-222-6514. They should not be blindly releasing sediment to the river, and if they are, if enough people call at least they'll know people are looking, and compliance will go to site.
  20. My first steelhead trip was to the Cowichan. Fished 5 days with 1 pull. One thing I did land was a rock, with a perfect hook-sized hole... man did that thing ever grab on and wake me up...Was quite the event pulling it in - The dead pelican that was at the bottom end of the bleachers, that i thought was a new rock.. - many beavers (not landed)
  21. I hope any day that it's dirty, people are calling alberta environment and complaining.
  22. Haven't seen one in person, but Brian Keating mentioned him and his wife followed tracks by the weir this winter. Wouldn't surprise me!
  23. I'd be hard pressed to see another NDP mandate, there was a lot of anger votes that went there way, that wont in the next election.. Hoping they at least realise that, and dont give easy-outs to the next party on things like the Castle. They're already backtracking a litle too far for me
  24. I didn't say I don't expect it there, but I also am not running the tests. I'll wait for positive results before committing to saying it's there or not..
  25. For sure some are resistant, but as mentioned, we don't know where we are in this 'infection'. We could very well be at the very start of it, and we may see population-sized issues moving forward, or we may well have resistant strands of rainbows and we're 15 years in. Since we really dont know when it showed up, we really dont know what its going to do (or if it has done something in the past). We also have such poor fisheries-population knowledge, that it would be hard to draw a firm conclusion anyway that we're seeing an issue, without us directly observing a fish kill At the end of the day, managing the spread is going to be an important issue. They haven't found any trace of it in the Red Deer and Oldman drainages (so far..), but for how long?
