Don: Grew up eating your sardine sized perch, and sun fish, and blue gill. Filet? What for? We gutted them removed head, dorsal and pectoral fins, dipped in egg and then flour and fried till golden. Stand them upright on the rib cage and peel the meat off the skeleton. YUM!!! those are some of the tastiest fish i've eaten. Same method works great for smaller trout too.

VaporTread. Have heard good things about guide boots too. Heavier duty than I need. Don't forget that we're in WHIRLING DIEASE country. DONT BUY FELT. The rubber is every bit as good as felt in the river and better on wet grass or mud imo.

SilverDoc: yeah pricey, but will they come unglued?? Went to Simms rubber sole couple years ago no issue.

Whirllng Disease Confirmed In Bow River
angler replied to Walton's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
Bowbone. To my knowledge no stocking in BNP since mid/late 80s. So doubt hatchery is source. -
To my knowledge current population is self sustaining. Not stocked for years now. While in NZ had a couple of conversations about wd and the spread. NZers now find that the spread is more by trampers who may cross multiple stream in a day than anglers. As for R. Not gonna happen. Remember Black Thursday a few years ago? Parks took a serious hit over a poisoning plan.

Water out is Johnson Creek down towards TCH and the beaver ponds along the hoodoo area then percolates. Don't think there is a direct connection to the Bow via Johnson Lake, but I'm ready to stand corrected.

Thanks for sharing. Nice succinct chart.

Home Hardware in Banff too.

I have a 10' BVK specifically for chironomiding. Got it at dealer price. Works great. But I'd be hard pressed to pay full retail for it. I also have numerous Scott (SAS, G3, STS, SVS all older models) and Loomis (IMX, IM6, GLX, Pro4x) rods. There really is no comparison with any of these to a BVK Buy the 'best' you can afford at the time of the purchase. Then you won't question your decision later.

The motor on my 2010 4Boys loader crapped out. Took it apart to a deluge of rusty water. Put it back together hoping for a miracle and voila it worked, at least long enough to get the boat off. Removed it at the shop and found the gut to be pretty worn and rough turning and 'grinding'. Triage says, situation critical. Called the Boys and to my shock and amazement learned some prices. $300 for the motor? $750 to 'upgrade'? to a centre mount. Both sound justifiable only in that there is not a large market or number of suppliers. So, is the dif between the end and centre mounted motor worth the extra $450. For $750 I could replace the just the motor twice

Best theory....... Spend whatever you feel you can afford. That way you will not wish later that you had spent that other few bucks. Not sayin by expensive, just don't buy lower than your target price.

Hwy 40 Squatters
angler replied to BurningChrome's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
I think that debacle at Castle ski area ' village' was the impetus to go after the other squatters. As that was just too much. -
Restore history? What date would you pick. 1890? 1760? 1500? Jurassic? Pre-whiteman? Pre-human? Just sayin...........

Hwy 40 Squatters
angler replied to BurningChrome's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
This is the best thing i've heard in a LONGGGGG time. Tow 'em all to the big flat on the SE side of the Maycroft rd Hwy 40 junction. Pack 'em in nice and tight. Put on a coupler lock. Want it back? Sign here. Agree that next time is a 3 month confiscation. Can't wait to hear all the wha wha wha about ruining somebody's summer long vacation or some such BS. Awwwwwwwww. Jee that's too bad, ya selfish d.head. -
A 'found' pelican case now holds almost everything for travel. Packed pretty tight but room for all but my entire array of hooks and tools. So I now pack hooks just for what I anticipate tying. I've also used an old multi tray tackle box but I've pared down on the 'required' tools. Have used a purpose made pack-cloth travel tying case I've had for close to 30 years.

what's wrong with them?? Plain and simple. No respect. Never did comprehend the notion that destroying stuff, especially others stuff, is fun. Like to know who so as to go to THEIR property and wreck their stuff.

Upper Bow Float - Bow Falls/canmore
angler replied to porto's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
not bad vid but he is VERY confused. Castle mountain is about 30km west of where the float is occuring. The only real concern is in the area around Harvie Heights where river braids A LOT. Experience on the lower Bow doesn't really count for much as little skill required. the upper Bow is another story. Narrow channels in places with little extra room. sweepers to be aware of. So you better be a more skilled oarsman than I see on the lower Bow on some days. -
River is very low right now, and about as crystal clear awe s it gets. Be prepared to put in quite a bit of hoofing time. As the doc said, very structure oriented. Look for log jams etc. Be prepared to lose a few - flies! We did not get as much severe damage as the Bow downstream of Canmore, but...... Nymphing can get expensive, but can be very effective. Personally, I'd be swinging smaller streamers near the junk, or hoping for a small hatch, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it to start. Access is limited. I'd take a walk along the golf course below the falls. The loop road is still closed so have to park at the falls and walk. Or, you could become a tourist attraction and fish the pool(s) just below the falls. Be aware that the bears are awake. Enjoy.

been using Simms staffs for a few years. Both the Alu model and the carbon fibre. I prefer the latter. Have yet to have an issue collapsing either - when I wanted. I did have an issue with the 'locking' mechanism on my first alu model. Tried to cross Livingstone in a slightly tricky spot while tending to the dog - fast current didn't want her swept away. Damn staff wouldn't stay engaged. Each time I put any weight on it it collapsed. I did not feel safe re-crossing, so ended up having to scramble up one of the steeper cliff walls to get out. This after the flood so no wood around to use. Replaced under warranty, but I was one dusty, sweaty, angler once I crested the cliff. Any stream which has lots of dead fall can usually provide a natural staff which can be easily discarded and replaced at next crossing. Not so much in the past couple seasons - hence I now carry staff at all times. Stay safe.

Bigfoamy. Guide companies do need licences. Lots of them. Working out of Banff I needed licences from the Town of Banff (both business licence and home business permit). If I wished to launch at Fish Creek I needed a K country permit. If I wanted to take out in Canmore I was supposed to have a Canmore business licence. Did the City want a chunk for using 'their' launch sites? I'm sure the MD's would also like some $ for carrying out activities in their jurisdiction, but I never asked - living on the premise that it sometimes easier to gain pardon than permission. I also had all the insurances proof of which is required to get the K country licence. Yes there are no 'guiding licences' But all the 'respectable' guides I know and used were covered with First Aide certificates. Some had river rescue certification as well. Catching fish = only part of the equation. I always looked at a day as an opportunity to teach, pass on some proper 'ethics', discuss conservation. And yes I probably worked a little harder at it than some. Yes, we were usually off the water by 6:00 - but because clients want to be back in time for dinner 2 hours away. My clientele was exclusively US Based with a couple Brit, NZ, tossed in, and all staying in Banff or Canmore. Significant travel time required, no matter where we went if we left the upper Bow. There have been at least two attempts over the years to get a licencing programme going - started by the loose guides association. In neither case did it proceed very far. So, the 'good ones' have tried to self regulate, but we all know how successful that can be. My .02

Dog Owners Opinion
angler replied to fishinglibin's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Morley Mutt. Cochrane Shelter. Have yet to meet a 'bad' one and amazed at how many around Banff and Canmore. Not much concern with in-bred medical problems of 'pure' breeds. -
