After 16 years we had to put our cat down awhile back ago,so the house seams a little off if you no what i mean.My wife has said already a few times that shes surprised i haven't come home with a dog yet. When the cat was around i always said i would like a dog when the time comes.I've been around dogs most of my life so i no what I'm getting into.I think the time is close so I'd like to here what other people have for pets.I'm thinking something mid size, i don't want the yappy lap dog, labs are cool but i don't have the space.

So my question, whats a good city type dog thats mid size?

Check out some dog rescue sites. There are a lot of great mixed breeds of medium size. As much as we have had purebreds in the past, (Mastiff and Poodle) there are a lot of options. Good Luck and Have Fun

Mike, over the years, we have had several Shelties. Think smaller Collie and you get the idea. They are very smart dogs as well as friendly, good with kids etc. the only negative thing I can come up with is that they shed hair a lot. It was only a problem when we had two at the same time. They are great dogs and we will probably have another one in the future.

Duck toller? They can be a little high strung(like a border collie) but they are good with water and smaller than a lab.

I have a smallish Lab(65lbs), she comes EVERYWHERE with me, for me its important that my sidekick can handle being wet all day, sometimes in lousy weather. I like being able to take her on the boat with no need to worry about her getting cold in the shoulder seasons(most of the time)

Also I end up doing some ridiculous walk and walks in canyons from time to time and she's "all terrain" to follow me everywhere.

She even retrieved a fly box of mine that fell in a swollen river and was as good as gone!

Anyway, if you plan on taking your dog fishing, think about water and weather.

Tough to beat a lab or retriever as a fishing/hiking/hunting etc partner, especially if you can get one with smaller parents. I've seen them as small as 50lbs, with a lot around 60...Can't wait to get out of renting so we can get a pup

I've always wanted a lab,i would have thought of them as a large dog but google also calls them mid size.I've been scouring the shelter sites.Theres all sorts of mixes out there with the lab in them.

Plug for the rescue dogs.

My current dog is a rescue. We got him as a 4 or 5 month old puppy about 3 years ago. Loves being outside, fantastic in the boat, stays out of the water when told (usually) and has no problem with hooks being pulled out of him. A little bigger than midsize (80ish lbs), and a little high on the energy level (likes a couple frisbee sessions everyday). Besides some fear issues, he's been a great dog. When the time comes, I wouldn't even consider anything but another rescue. We got him through ARF.

I also have a dog from ARF. He is the best dog we have ever had. He is a mixture of lab, shepard, collie and husky. Definitely a smart dog and extremely friendly. Loves to swim. He came from a reserve and we got him when he was approximately 8 months old. He was already house trained and had not been abused. My experience with the rescue dogs has been very positive. They are excellent dogs as long as they have not been abused.

lab mix all the way. I've got a lab/shepherd cross that I adopted from the SPCA 8.5 years ago. He is 10 now and still healthy as a horse and eager to fish. I couldn't ask for a better friend-smart, loyal, strong, harmless and as a bonus makes a great pillow. The shepherd in him makes him tall though, so high end of medium sized!

Our oldest dog was a rescue that came from the Tsuu T'ina reserve and she has been great from day one (other than once eating an entire rubbermaid bin of all my hackle, but that was my fault for leaving it out :$*%&: ). Loves people - especially kids, has never messed in the house, never barks, and really loves anything to do in the outdoors. We also just picked up two puppies on the highway across from the casino on the Morley reserve last summer. We kept one and found some friends to take the other one. Both have also been great for each of our families, so my recomendation would also be to look at some of the local rescue groups. There are alot of great dogs out there that could really use use great homes and reserve rescues love the outdoors and make great hiking and fishing dogs. There are some nice medium sized ones here:

Springer Spaniel might fit the profile you are looking for too. Very affectionate dogs, love the outdoors, highly trainable, good for hunting as well as companionship. I grew up with one and miss him dearly, and if ever afforded the opportunity to get another dog that would be it

We got our dog from Pawsitive match (http://www.pawsitivematch.org/). They typically have medium to small dogs. Mine looks like it has some duck toller but isn't a huge fan of the water, which is good as she doesn't disturb the water much. However, she has no issues staying out with my on my full day walk and wades or on the ice during hard water season.

I've seen a lot of their rescue dogs, their foster homes and system are excellent.
