  1. Looks like as of this morning the fire is incredibly close to the townsite, with images of fire on Mt. Crandell and Bear's Hump. On the north end, the fire has left the park, and now there are states of emergency declared for M.D. of Pincher & County of Cardston. Evacuations of portions of those areas and a portion of the Blood Reserve have occurred (closest to Waterton; only portions evacuated, not the entire MD/County as some news outlets are leading people to believe this morning). Best source of info on the evacuations is www.emergencyalert.alberta.ca, and there is some decent coverage on the Calgary Herald webpage. 2. Just heard that they have issued an evacuation order for Waterton National Park. They have been under alert for several days, so perhaps either the Kenow fire has jumped into the park, or they are just being precautionary in anticipation of the winds in the forecast. http://www.pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/ab/waterton/securite-safety/feu-fire-kenow
  3. You're pretty crafty.. make some coasters...
  4. Looks awesome! Those are some great photos. Looking at them though, my lungs hurt I've still not recovered from my wife dragging my arse up Turtle Mountain this past weekend. Bad thing about it was there wasn't even a lake at the top... I clearly have to plan my hiking destinations more carefully.
  5. I've used the Fishpond ones. They are robust, but I prefer retractable to the coil material. Put my nippers on a Dr. Slick retractable last year (has a steel cord), and haven't had a single failure incident so far. I switch it back and forth from my sling to my float tube a few times a year, and even the pin-on clip (which looks to be potentially the weakest link) seems to be holding up well.
  6. A good portion of Waterton trails were closed as of yesterday (only limited ones, mostly in the townsite area, remain open). Crandell Campground, Red Rock, and Cameron Lake (visitor use) are closed. Forecast is for scorching hot temps all week, so can only get worse from here.
  7. X2. I'm just really starting to scratch the surface on what mine can do, and hope to start doing more underwater stuff soon. Took a couple of underwater videos at the beach this summer in Nova Scotia that were kinda cool. Tried some underwater of a bull I caught a couple weekends ago, and had my settings wrong (panorama instead of underwater, which completely frigged things up $#&!). The TG-5 is just out I think, so one would expect prices on the 4 to drop. I believe the 5 has a better sensor, faster continuous shooting, and is more robust; but other than that I think the 4 still stacks up well. I see there's a 4 for sale in the trading post.
  8. Question for you Bow guys and gals... are the levels/flows any higher now than they were then?
  9. Water temp on the Crow was 62F today. Nights are definitely showing cooler for the next while on the forecast, and daytime highs not nearly so scorching. I think we are past the worst of it. Water levels are very low though.
  10. Them's fightin words. I'm surprised Pete has let it go as long as he has. Very nice photo Deb!
  11. Drove past the Crow and into B.C last night taking my son out to a Scout camp. With the daytime temps we've had this week, the Crow (and on the other side, Michel) was pretty high and dirty. I think the snowpack has started to diminish... it looks like less snow through the Pass already compared to last weekend. Guaranteed, no matter what happens for weather we won't have a repeat of last year, as there is still a significant amount of snow up in them thar hills. I think temps getting into the double digits from time to time with occasional rain over the next few weeks means a more "typical" runoff this year.
  12. Whoops... I woulda bet a small sum of money you said Core, but pretty clear from the thread title (AND the third post) otherwise. The middle aged brain works in mysterious ways.
  13. Amazon (even the .ca site) and eBay both have some options available.
  14. Wasn't on the fly, but a fun time was had nonetheless. A few years ago we were mackerel fishing in PEI. One of the folks on the boat managed to get this tangled in their line, and we had a rather fine time landing it. It took about four of us to get it on board to cut the line. (Gannets make our gulls look like sparrows.) This guy looked perfectly unharmed after the ordeal; after the Cap'n let him go, he flew around for a few minutes but stayed close to the boat to wait for cleaning time.
  15. This is way more entertaining than the vice/vise debate on the other forum.
  16. Too late. By now he's already read this and has his whacking day stick polished and ready to go.
  17. Except a Winston I've heard/read very good things about the Orvis Recon. I have the 6# Access, (which the Recon replaced) and I quite like it for streamers and bigger game. I tend to use 6 weights on stillwater, so my experience and obvious bias to Winston is based on my 4# BIIIX I use for dry fly fishing
  18. This from the AB Wilderness Assc really resonated with me... Joanna Skrajny, Conservation Specialist with Alberta Wilderness Association: “Approximately 90% of Alberta’s provincial public land is open to motorized recreation even though only 2-6% of the population uses OHVs for fun. Deadline for the consultation period is extended, so if you haven;t done it yet, you have no good excuse
  19. The finisher's name is Geordie... how cliché. I bet he commutes from Tyneside. Many years ago I did some touring around that area, but that was long before I was interested in fly fishing. Perhaps if I go back, a factory tour might be in order. Thanks for sharing Lornce.
  20. Never heard of Togens before. Prices look very competitive. Thanks!
  21. That 30 second/60 second mortality rate was a little surprising to me. A tip I once heard was to hold your breath as soon as you take the fish out of the water... if you have to breathe, then the fish has to as well, so back in the water it goes. The 72% mortality at a minute suggests my above tip is probably reckless in terms of a guide for fish survival. I think there is far less chance I will die if I hold my breath for a minute; that said, if I stuck my head under water for a minute after running a 200m dash, I might not fare so well either. One cannot assume though that a "hero shot" automatically means the fish has been out of the water that long. If everything is all set ahead of time, you can easily get a decent pic in 10 seconds or less.
  22. Canadian Llama for beads, and a limited supply of other tying stuff. The winter in AZ, so orders may take a little longer to arrive in the colder months. You can pay in CDN $ though no matter when you order
  23. Kijiji in Calgary... in like new shape, so saved some money to put toward more hackle
  24. Here's some pics. Installed some LED lights and hung a bunch of materials last night. Still a few things to figure out yet (hook & bead storage for example) and need some containers for chenille, feathers & fur vs the bags they are in now. Otherwise pretty happy with it.
