Got to tie at the Calgary Boat and Sportsman show, but gave all the PineSquirrelCheaters to the Hook & Hackle Club Fly bank, good cause and it pays to start off the year with good Karma.

Curious About Ffc Members
flyfishfairwx replied to murray's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
I've lived in Calgary since 2013, in Alberta since 1998. Originally from Saint John New Brunswick, joined the military in 1982 left it in 2006. So a gypsy for most of my life but a respectable one. I have been fly fishing since I was 7 years old, my mother died then and my father who was a bigger Gypsy than I am, left when I was 3 months, so my Grandfather gave me an old bamboo pole with a small section of fly line and leader with a Dark Montreal or Paramechie Bell wet fly and took me fly fishing LOTS!! When he went fly fishing for Atlantic Salmon I got to carry our lunch pail. this turned into a love of the outdoors and fly fishing of course, it has been my therapy for a lot of years.. I tied trout and Salmon flies for DOAKS Fly shop for a time until it was time to move again. When it came time to retire it was clear it would be Alberta, just not clear where or with whom.. Now very very happily remarried to the most wonderful Fly Fishing girl, Ladystrange or Tiana as some of you may know her. We are continuing on our Gypsy Fly fishing ways together. -

hahah Gold Bond In the Army fondly known as a "BJ in a Can" Even if this is a warm destination, do some warm ups and stretching, if you can start a yoga routine before going then I would suggest that.. you need to relax muscles not tense up to cast the big irons....

Read up on that before you go grabbing gear etc.. I don't think that is an offence that you can do that with..the rules are fairly specific as to what type of offence and when you can. best to just get all the info and proof you can.. I work in the security field..

Holding Fish For Pictures
flyfishfairwx replied to pokerfish's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
And that is the best size to hold fish that way..... any larger and it is best to leave them in the water and not do the rise for the picture, let their own body support them in the water.. by lifting larger fish your use it's weight against it's self, holding where he did.. look at your photos critically and you will see .. -

Found a note on a camper door, stating "payment" for renting the trailer was inside, it was being run as a "arbnb" picked up the note took it to the CO at Beauvais Lake , they were very interested, allegedly the trailer owner had another property they were renting !!!! Same place as my last post on permanent campers took place.. Sigh, also had a group of Millennials move in next door to us and spark up a "Gas Lawn Mower" at 2200hrs (10 pm) to mow a place for them to build a fire... with no fire ring of stones... sigh the Castle area is beautiful but the people are ugly... BTW - NOTE: In case you're wondering you are not allowed to mow the grass of a meadow, or run a commercial accommodation rental in the Castle area. -

Fly Fishing Is Good For Your Head

That is awesome, for me Fly fishing, fly tying have been a therapy for over 45 years, physical and mental therapy, Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing Canada has been around since 2007 here in Canada and has gone through several changes but still remains available to all that need it, here in Alberta there is a group of anglers that will still help those that need the healing therapy of the rivers. Awesome to see this film and hear his story , and damn nice catch.. cool Dog too! -
Nope that's the south east branch down near the texas border, close to Maine, in the north counties. only Bass and chubbs down there.. True story!!

Best Guided Trip You've Ever Done?
flyfishfairwx replied to jgib01's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
With Wolf Creek Outfitters on the Missouri Rover from the Holter dam to Craig, and then into Izaaks for supper. Did the float with my son and we were fishing midges. what a great day!! Yes it was both of our first floats and our guide was bang on the money for fish and flys .. His favorite saying all day was " Blame the guide, if it goes good or bad" -
Standing beside some fly Fisherman there is a great Girlfriend. Who keeps him humble by casting the perfect cast and drift, there by catching not one but two Fishzilla's on two different trips to the same spot!..

Having a dog is like many things in life it is a responsibility and hard work. The reward is a companion that won't tell any one your secret fishing spots and how small your fish really were. I take Fischer very seriously when he tells me something is not right, he has not been wrong yet. He is getting old and somewhat unsteady of body as most GSD's do so he rests more at home now after a day on the water now. I leave him home now more if I know the days fishing will be in a more challenging area. Will I train another German Shepherd after Fischer, yes without a doubt, that is part of the joy of having a GSD. Will I be able to replace him, no never. The issue with the "aggressive Dogs" that people are encountering is mostly with the owners, they are responsible for the actions of the dog, and many people have a problem with responsibility these days..
-
Well Skwala and Silver Doctor, I strongly suggest you think very hard before taking any aggressive actions against dogs you meet while fly fishing, for several reasons and all of them to do with your safety.. That being said, I totally agree with you both.. The reason for my first statement is that a dog running wild or even just loose and ahead of its owner is very unpredictable. Also the owner is unpredictable.. Now your nervousness can cause nervousness in a normally calm dog, you aggression can cause aggression in a normally calm dog.. I have witnessed this several times. I always watch people as they approach Fischer, and when I sense that they are nervous I will get him to sit and ask them if they would like to meet him or ask me questions. He does not charge or chase bears wolves etc, and he will put himself between me and somebody or something if he feels that I am being threatened, he will do this for Tiana also and my sons even though they are grown now.. Now the point of all this is that you make sure you know the difference between a well trained dog and an untrained dog, don't make a mistake, because I won't!

Tear it up and pave it , paint it green and then go fishing!! I jest!! think about a drought hardy alternative ? -
My Dog Fischer , was just over 14 weeks when he had his first trip to the Crowsnest river. He is a Pure Bred German Shepherd dog, he is now 8 1/2 years old. He has stood between me and 2x black bears, 1 x Grizzly and 2 x wolves, also chased a burglar out of the house. With the Bears and wolves he was certainly putting himself between me and danger, protecting me, no chasing no running at or challenging, but guarding. It is a hell of a sight to see his "Mohawk up" and his lips curled and hear the deep growl. These were very close encounters also and with the Grizzly predatory from a young determined bear, first time I have had to pull bear spray and stand against an attack, it lasted 45mins. without Fischer I would not have known the bear was there until too damn late. While fishing he stays very close to me , like on the back of my heels, has no interest in the fish, he will drop a stick or 8 foot log behind me and I tell him "closer" he will pick it up and throw it closer and repeat until it hits me in the back of the legs I then tell him to "wait" once I finish doing what ever I am doing in the water I throw the stick for him and we repeat this all day.. He has warned me of people coming and of close encounters with uncounted animals, he has not interest in deer Elk Moose etc.. He does however not like Birds, he thinks one of them pushed him in the Castle River , that's another story, however I can tell him no and he will not pursue his displeasure with the birds. The connection with you and your dog while fishing and any type of activity has to be strong, this means daily training and conditioning, this starts when he or she is 8 weeks old. One of the tricks I use on all my dogs it to take the pup to a wide open field and set him down, lift his chin, look him in the eyes and say his name then take a step backward and call him "here, or Come, or by name" if he comes he gets praise , if not then repeat until he gets it, this goes on for a full month. I do this from the very first day. For me this has created a "Velcro dog" which is what I want, no worries of him wondering off or chasing anything. Work with your dog daily, love him completely and he will return that love and commitment totally. Train your dog well, and train yourself better.
