  1. Those solar flares and eruption played havoc with my HF communications when I worked MACS in Europe and Combat HF comms in North America.. Neat to hear the solar noise, from the HF sets though, no human made noise could match it... I used to work Ambulance and E911 in Wainwright AB, and in the winter I would be driving home at 0100AM and turn the lights off on my old Chevy truck, this would turn the dash and headlights off, and then I would stick my head out the window and watch the Northern lights Aurora Borealis while I drove home..
  2. Rufus28, If that is directed towards me, I never leave home for an outdoor adventrue in the mountains or anywhere else without mine. Do you have another means of Emergency Notification now that you have your pilots lic, that you do not need the SPOT? Heaven forbid the plane go down and or comms be lost on the plane, I think the spot would be a great "Back UP in that case. I have no stake in or anything thing like that in SPOT. just think they are a great tool.
  3. Read this, http://flyfishcalgary.com/flyfisher_survival_kit.php , I think the important part for your adventure is the Spot information.. you can borrow one, and have the owner set it up with your info, temporarily. I have done a lot of solo fly fishing and even hunting trips , the hunting trips are day trips but the fly fishing have been as long as a week, with only the Dog(s) to talk to.. Love it for my own reasons... remember this.. Failing to plan is planing to fail... All that being said, Barnaby Ridge, is closed they are installing an sewage plant there for the ski hill, so you may want to skip it... they moved all the imaginary fish to Nicolas Sharon Lake in Lethbridge.. Rainy ridge, the lake collapsed and there is a mud hole there now.. Just stay home and fish the Toilet Bow river.
  4. Morrish Mouse for those minnows!!!!! Note : there are no Bulls on the old man.
  5. Ohhhh Man I want to be in that parallel universe... Me too sorry for the side track, got lost may need the gear...
  6. I actually love the slip and sliding done on gravel roads. But and there is always a but not at the expense on somebody else's vehicle or windshield.. I keep it fairly tame now, used to go like a bat out of hell when I drove dispatch, or on a road run.. In Cyprus we had something call "urban Surfing" after a long climb up Trudos mountain there was one long curve that was down and sharp to the right, the guys in the back would climb out on the roof of the British Land Rover and surf until the up hill side of the curve, and the LR slowed down, the trick was the driver put it into Neutral and let it glide down.. just as the road started to climb again there was a Cypriot Police station and they would just shake their heads at the CRAZY CANUKS and BRITS... Not really about gravel but remember that this was on the wrong side of the road!!!!!
  7. That would be true if I did not keep picking up others discarded survival pack empties!!!!
  8. That spray hand sanitizer stuff is also Alcohol so use it to start a fire if needed due to rain or poor burning materials.. One of the best pieces of survival gear I carry is my SPOT GPS tracker. It is a great piece of mind for my wife and kids, I fish a lot by myself and the old don't expect me home until let's say midnight , means I could be broke down or broken for 10 - 12 hrs before anybody gets worried.. The SPOT means near instant notification of anything going wrong. I still of course carry a survival kit, I have 2, one for summer and one for winter! the winter one is augmented by whiskey and the summer one by Beer
  9. I like it when the kitty scratches !!!!! But I do not like a scratchy kitty!!!! If you need an explanation your name must be TACO !!!!! AHHHHH Shiit I am bored!!!!!!
  10. X1 And I am not trying to get on Don or TACO's good side, cause they ain't got one! Just think native species is the better way to go, clean up our neighborhood before we bring a new type of trout!!! we now may have splake in the Old man dam res.. That will be great, we will see them in the rivers.. Think laker and Brooky but fricking big and mean... look out all you whussy Cutties,
  11. PSFG Have all that covered!!!! They both my Golden Retriever and Fischer will not touch food put in front of them if I tell them not to! Only Fischer will not chase animals in the field, he will stand still, we have had hundreds of cows, horses, and mules (have to be careful of them) come up to us. we have had a deer come tot he tail gate of the truck and Fischer just lifted his head and then went back to sleep, he has stopped me from going further up a path on the crow because he saw a skunk, he did not want to go further until the skunk left the path. (smart dog ehh) He has spotted and warned me of 2 wolves and stood his ground ie not advanced just barked a loud bark when we spotted a bear in a gravel pit.. the bear took off at high speed. the weekend he got sick we startled a momma Elk and Fischer just looked at it and let it pass, then watched it until it went out of sight. Thor in the winter is great, will not leave me, in the summer he will chase so he stays home most times, and Mother Fairweather walks him..
  12. Very well said.. SD I was fishing the crow, and a drift boat came by, don't laugh it happens, the client caught a fish just below me, nice but not great, well while the guide was retying for the client I walked down the river some, and on a nice wide bank caught a feisty bow, a nice jumper, both the client and guide commented on the fish and action as the guide pulled hard to move the drift boat out and away. Point is that not all or even many encounters are bad between walkers (for lack of a better term) and the drift boat..
  13. Hi Just wanted to let you all that this event happened, and there will be more, much more, happening in the future. Our troops deserve this and that we cant include out American Brothers in arms is great. I do not care about personnel feelings on war, armies, or the US, this is about wounded persons, getting some healing time on the water! PHWFFC is still in it's infancy and could use all the love and support it can get. Hint Hint, there is a donation button on the website now!!!! I know Calgary loves it's Canadian Heroes, support if you can.. Shameless plug I know but and there is always a but, I would do it a million times over with no shame whats so ever! http://projecthealingwaters.ca/
  14. First few times go without bringing your fly rod, just walk and teach he what you expect from him! It is as simple as that, When I fish with Fischer he can slip into the water beside me to cool off and I have no idea that he has done it and he is right at my feet, until he shakes off I used to have a bear bell on him to know where he was but now it is not needed. Even my Golden Retriever does not go in the water, but if I or anyone near catches a fish he must supervise the retrieval and lament the release. That being said you must train yourself to know where he is at all times and what he is doing , I failed that my last trip and it almost cost Fischer his life! Think very hard as to if this is something you can do!
  15. Agreed the line is any thing that floats. There will be whining at first but so what!
  16. In this case it is a true mystery as to what caused it! So only vigilance as to where he/she is, what he/she is eating, playing in, and being around, I would dear say that watch your neighbors, and what they leave around also. I have wracked my brains and gone over every minute of the trip and can't come up with a single obvious thing that would cause it!. I feel like I let my best friend down and IT WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN, That is my promise as an owner and Soldier, I will not fail!
  17. Some of you know that I fly fish with my very best Fur Friend Fischer, well last week he got deathly ill on a trip, Acute Renal Failure! How neither I nor the veterinarian, have figured that out yet. He has said that with all this rain, and the warmer weather that some of the types of poisonous plants and bacteria and virus are at their heights, so Please be careful, I would not wish what I or Fischer just went through on my worst enemy. He is home now due to the wonderful work and care of veterinarians and staff at the Family Pet Hospital and 24 Hr Pet Emergency Center here in Lethbridge, His kidneys will be compromised for the rest of his life, which I plan to make as comfortable and happy as possible. This is how Fischer should be.. with his buddy Thor Not like this, no Pup should be like this ever!!
  18. That is the reason I have a digital camera now, the first time I took my wife fly fishing on the Oldman, we fished for a bout 5 hrs and she went to the Jeep to get lunch, well she saw a young bear, come out of the woods on the other side of the river and then come through the field and hit the opposite river bank then head for where I was fishing, she yelled I thought I heard something and then she yelled again, still not sure I did nothing , the third time she yelled I understood her, I thought she had the bear up with her, so there I go 9 ft 6wt and a 8in knife, up the bank , she was at the top of the bank looking at me and pointing at the bear who is now across the river from where I just was! we watched the bear pace up and down the bank and then head back to the field and woods. Funny she still will not fly fish that section of the Oldman with me? Pm me to see if it is the same area if you want! Ohh yes the digi camera, she wanted proof for the insurance company, when I do not come home from Fly fishing, she hopes I get pictures !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  19. Nope I think he caught it in the Porcupine hills, had a cutty and a juvenile Bull in its mouth, and was humping a rainbow and a Brown at the same time!!! Shoooooot I need to get out fishing again!!!
