  1. worked for a gas plus gas station when I was 15 or so..... in fact my first fake ID was a "Gas Plus Employee ID" LOL got me into the bikini bar off 17th ave in Calgary among others.... It was confiscated by the RCMP about 2 months later....... I don't think the gas was any different but to tell the truth I have no idea.......
  2. I tie in the dark by feel alone by robbing yourself of one sense you heighten the others. I also hold the hook in my teeth.... no vise for this guy. Just kiddin. I have a regular pedastal light with an ajustable neck I picked up at a garage sale for 50 cents. Works but it sucks specially since I usually tie in a dark basement. I may have to look at some of these natural light ones. they sound good.
  3. CapeB It is a olympus stylus 720w. I have now discovered a couple tricks to getting decent shots. It just takes a while for the camera to find the right focus..... that and the camera needs to be completely still when the pic is taken. I dunno if there is another way but this seems to work OK..... none the less the lighting seems to be a concern as my camera seems to drain some color from images unless you are in bright sunshine....... Just need to work at it a bit more and I should be able to get some consistent shots...... I may invest in a small tripod as well. I will PM you if I have any tying questions as long as you don't mind. PS your new avatar is really sweet
  4. not gonna claim to be an expert but I would tie some a bit smaller as I have seen em real small in adult form..... like size 20...... that said I dunno if you need to tie your nymphs that small depends on the hatch where your fishin em. If your fishing the athabasca in winter you want some tinies.
  5. perfect I need a dozen...... should i set them to shock everyone when 1 person screws up, or just let it shock each individual person as they screw up........ hmmmmm I guess I will just try both and see which gets the best results
  6. just 1 not even fishing related....... beat I mean teach my staff to tell the difference between a charge and a payment----- and if successful in that teach them to understand that both can be positive or negative. I have a feeling I will be spending all of new years eve and most of the next day trying to balance the past year so I am not even gonna toss in quiting smoking...... cause I will likely be breaking it by 1 am jan 1st 2008. Is electroshock an acceptable way to teach the exceptionally stupid?
  7. Sorry it didn't seem to be moving much before but I see that some more votes have been cast. Either way there is 5 different stlyes of steelhead/salmon fly in this contest and they are all pretty damn well tyed and great examples of their style. I voted for cape b as his wings are amazing and likely make his fly the most difficult tie...... That said hydros is stunning........ If we want to continue the voting I am ok with that..... Or maybe we should redo this genre sometime when more people are able to enter and vote ect. We could even break it down into more specific styles. In any rate win or lose I am more then happy with the votes I did manage to get and with 5 flys like that there is no loser in the bunch. Just on a quick side note Michel921 I love that fly its a great example of what you can do with synthetics while still maintaining the generaly excepted form of that type of fly, and having a natural looking tie. I often steer clear of to many synthetics simply because I find it hard to make the fly have that natural feel. But you caught it. Bet its a great fishing fly as well with all that sparkle
  8. So does this mean I actually won? I've never actually won one of these before..... All I gotta say is that was a great contest and some kickass flies I'd frame em all. Anyways back from the famdamlies ate too much again. Hope everyone had a good christmas.
  9. Actually I do a bit of wings already and I gotta say that the bronze mallard is one of the toughest winging materials I have had the pleasure of workin with. But at the moment I can afford silk more then I can afford feathers LOL. Wings come next month.
  10. Thats a 40 of christmas spirit. Crown Royal, Canadian whisky
  11. Well we had several different styles so I decided to go with the one no one had touched. So now presenting my first spey/dee inspired fly. Hook- Patridge of Redditch 1/0 Tag- red thread, silver xtra small oval tinsel, lilac pearl silk Tail- Golden Pheasant crest dyed red orange tyed splayed Butt- Black ostrich herl Body rear 2/3- blue silk reverse rib- 2 xs oval silver tinsel & purple silk Full rib- 2 xs gold oval tinsel & Silver flat tinsel Body front 1/3 webby dark chartruesse ringneck pheasant dubbed Hackle- Ringneck pheasant rump feather dark chartreusse Hackle counter rib- xs oval silver tinsel Throat- Brown RN pheasant rump, natural barred Gadwall flank Wings- Bronze mallard Head- Black thread 3 coats of varnish Lots of new materials to me so hopefully I didn't miss any in the recipe. On a side note- It may look like I finished the head too far back but this is the way it is supposed to be done according to my research. However if anyone has any experience with these flies I would be interested to know how close I got to the optimal posistion.
  12. as you can see from my signature its got nothing to do with the fish..... Its all about the Jetboat edited (sorry it was bad humour after dryflys post we musta both posted at the same time)
  13. hmmmmm that whole disecting fly/counting sheep things a good idea..... I sometimes find it really tough to clear my head of other stuff. I have also been having nightmares about grizzly bears killing me....... wierd eh? Cape B You can keep entering as long as I can pick yer brain about Fully dressed flies and married wings ect I also have to say that the comments about how a blown up digital pic brings out all the bad in a fly is right on...... I just don't know how it is you guys get such great pictures...... I hate the macro setting on my camera it takes for ever to get a decent pic. It might be that my place is just to damn dark to get a good shot...... Do you guys use tripods or anything for your pics? Anyways hopefully I get some time to rip off an entry for this next contest but its gonna be tough as I need to dye materials and I got only 3 hours today to tie..... Oh yeah and I should spend it christmas shopping..... but I'm not going to.
  14. Either way works I suppose..... I like tying something fresh though.
  15. yeah for sure. Its cool to have as many entrants as possible.
  16. hmmm sounds like fun........ I dunno if the pocketbook will allow for it but let me know once you get the figures. Might need a stopover in London though......
  17. it does but the legal limit is higher for GT snowracers. Quite a lot higher infact. Unless you find you and your GT racer flying down deerfoot trail. If this happens you've had enough eggnog Thanks for the words SD! Merry Christmas to all
  18. Hydro- I know the bucktail sucked....... But I had nothing in the way of suitable wing feathers whatsoever..... I am gonna have the same problem with the steelhead/salmon contest...... but I am workin on getting something I can work with....... But thanks for the compliment on the shank. Found the GP in green at wholesale a month ago or so (got SilverDoctor blue as well). I was gonna put another one on as topping as well but scrapped the idea as I didn't really feel it suited the bucktail and I was outta tying time. I am happy with parts of this fly but it may get rejected to the fishable catagory. This was the best contest I have seen so far and some of the flys are just amazing. PS Thanks for devoting the time to these contests DBT.
  19. Thats a beauty fly CapeBSalar. I love that hook
  20. Well I guess when you lead that kinda life you run the risk of hurtin those you leave behind......... He will be sorely missed and I never even got to try his bulltrout burgers..... sniff
  21. Thats a great article...... to bad about some of the pointless comments some reader felt the need to add though....... I would really like to try that scuba thing in a river some time....... It would be really fun to swim up behind wading anglers in the bow and scare the bejeebus out of them
  22. I'm not sure I see the need for the sharkskin but I can see it being a handy big water line....... if the pickup and casting is that much easier and longer then it would likely be a great when you want that little bit extra...... might be a great bow river line...... but I don't think that it would be my choice for the majority of my fishing as anything under 60 feet is pretty reachable with current lines. I will have to get one though to try it out. I heard lots of people didn't like the ridgeline because of noise and other reasons but my ridgeline is only a tiny tiny bit louder through my guides and all in all I like the line just fine. I find I have a bit of a line fetish actually just got a loop stillwater line, getting a new SA DT trout taper or 2 for next season as well as a clear intermediate a new 40 plus fast sink tip and have the 120' SA ED line on my xmas list. Then theres the gamut of spey lines I need(want) for next year......... I think this fishin thing is a sickness......... Any new word on the tapers they will be adding the sharkskin tech to BBB?
  23. Love Mexico...... I started wandering Puerto Vallarta by myself when I was 12 all around mainly outside of the areas one would consider really touristy.... I would feel as safe there (in PV) as I would here...... Once when I was 17 found myself alone on a dark deserted beach in the middle of the night with about a dozen of the sketchiest looking mexican guys I've seen about a km from the nearest sign of life....... one of those long stories...... I was kinda worried at first and was kickin myself for getting into the situation as I was carrying a pretty good number of pesos at the time. But we ended up BSing most of the night around a small fire drinkin corona, tequila, and mescal. Occaisionally people would come and go...... It was really fun. I think its relatively safe but I mean anything can happen anywhere........
