What Others Think Of Us
lonefisher replied to DonAndersen's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
I really like that article..... hate to ask a stupid question but is that from London England or London Ontario? -
yeah the first contest I think got a relativly good amount of interest considering it is still pretty early and the deadline was pretty short..... I woulda posted something but I can't find my camera and I just plain ran outta time....... so should I add a material or no?
-
I like it...... Not gonna buy it but I think its a pretty sweet rod. Its a manly pink. And really its not how the rod looks in your hand its how a nice tight 30 foot loop looks in the eye of the person who was just laughin at yer pink rod..... I am a little surprised though to hear ladystrange say that its tough in a fairly male dominated sport...... Do you just get that over the shoulder half scowl with the unseen but felt thousand yard stare hiding beneath dark polarized sunglasses when you walk past other anglers?

I agree with rick.... I think its a great idea flytyer and when everyone is goin nuts during the winter it should pickup..... I was also thinking that maybe some sort of process change might help....... maybe if we just leave the next participant open and maybe make a rule that you have to wait atleast 2-3 full turns(additions) before you can add again..... every new component adds a new direction to the fly so even if the participants are fewer and more frequent as long as they are not making more then 1 turn at once the direction will keep changing and 1 person should not gonna influence the tie too much. If we happen to get 2 posts at the same time that create a conflict then first posts stays....... flytyers the man though so thats just an idea PS I woulda particpated but I never got called

ouch hit a huy where it hurts...... right in the cords.....
-
believe it or not I think hawgstoppah is likely the closest..... apart from the colors I never thought that fish was very big..... until I saw the pic...... Its one of those rare shots that really does make the fish look bigger then it seemed at the time..... rather then the other way around.
-
What size do y'all figure this one is...... never did measure it just curious what you guys would put it at.
-
Anyways I am pretty sure I see what you mean and if you wanted something to resemble a cork grip I would simply order one maybe slice in half length wise if frame depth is a concern.... regardless you will need a deep frame. heres a link to the cabelas rod building selection of cork product and stuff..... I would think that something outta there might suit your needs....... http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/template...rentId=cat20431

Just let me clarify you want it to resemble a rod handle?
-
R and D hardware here in canmore has sheeted cork.... bout 3/8th" thick. You would have to figure away to cleanly cut or burn the circle out though..... must be a place in cangary that has that sorta stuff as well.

Flytyer no worries the post was kinda vague. It works quite well...... but the hair products need to be in small quantities and need to be dried very well afterwards..... also hair needs to be folded over the hide side to make the hairs flare out otherwise its tough to get the hair to dye right to the base. I usually staple the hide to hold it that way. Sometimes they need a couple treatments to get the desired affect. Feathers are pretty cool as well.
-
I'm not talking about treating and cleaning out bugs..... this is for dyeing when dyed products are not available
-
not an expert but I don't think so.... how would I tell?
-
sorry I think this one has the microwave directions http://www.thepiper.com/fiberart/koolaid/basic-howto.html

Few sites out there can't find the one I originally used but this one is basically the same. If you are gonna do some PM as theres a couple tricks I learned.... I also usually use the microwave method as its pretty damn simple and pretty fast as well http://www.knitty.com/issuefall02/FEATdyedwool.html

love dyeing (dying, dieing) stuff.....I use the koolaid method google it and you should find a site explaining dying wool with koolaid works the same for most animal products I have dyed. Though I have only done feathers and deer hair. couldn't find any yellow koolaid though so I have dyed stuff yellow using tumeric.... works but took forever to kill the tumeric smell to my nose 2 hot cycles is a mesh baggie in the wash seemed to work..... I am still not sure if fish can smell the remnants but I don't think so.... For fairly dark hairs I would think you might have to start by bleaching if you wanted a decent dye job..... but I haven't done this. The deer hair under the fly in this pic are examples of koolaid (and tumeric) dyeing. As to the actual original questions I don't believe when hair is the topic that animals are bred for tying..... but I'm not sure.....birds are in some cases for sure but animals I think not...... As for organic.... I don't understand the question
-
Nope...... but considering the ice is already forming there one just hopes someone will be managing it over the winter so them fish get bigger for next year. I'm not sure if TU could take it over though...... unless the band let them.
-
Wish I knew as it could be handy. I have boiled deer hair while dyeing.... it wasn't that curvy to begin with though so its hard to say if it did anything in the way or staightening it. I'd love to see the site if you find it.

It was great to meet you Mr Loblaw hope to see you on the river again some time. Gotta say that hawg' hawg is 25-26
-
oh crap did I post the answer to soon?
-
Wow nice guess fly tyer 25 is actually a couple 8ths on the generous side but close enough. I say LK's is about 8" you know though I measured a carbon copy fish of mine in that pic with the tape flat on the body rather then extended above..... It measured close to 27 but I figure it was about 2 inchs of curve...... so I guess it depends on how you measure. Bonus question how many of my bauer reels would fit in that gut?

try that one except glen
