Landslide Lake/lake Of The Falls
lonefisher replied to Tie1on24's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
I suppose they could also be refering to a different lake as they call this one lake of falls instead of lake of the falls but they do not have another listing for LOTF, but I also haven't had a chance yet to check the map coordinates....... Anyways I don't mean to flog the dead donkey but after 3 years I just can't picture those fish well enough to know for sure but it really seems to me that I would have been able to distinguish...... plus the fact that a number of people have referred to the brookies in that lake makes me wonder what the deal is........ sounds like I may have to go fish it again. -
some seriously cool ties in here guys I would like to enter but my tying station has been packed away for a while........... long story but it might be a while before I get much tying done.
-
I think if nothing else simply fishing that one with a more imitative pattern in tandem at depths would bring the fish in..... you might get the majority on the more realistic pattern but thats gonna hve some attractor quality for sure....... might be worth tying some with a silver tinsel body underneath as well I think that might be deadly as you are gonna get some glow and some reflection....... Cool tie man. What is the ribbing material you have used if you don't mind me asking. PS send my dozen along with Glen's edit in PPS I have come up with a new idea for chiro's as well I will try and post some soon and will explain how I think combining your glowing rib material with my ties might be pretty productive......

Gopherboy you didn't offend at all I was not as involved back then and I have never harvested fish other then the odd lake trout so I would not have spent to much time trying to ID them, But you are obviously right about the brook/bull thing...... I was probably more in a hurry to get my line back in the water for a bigger cutty. I do completely understand what you mean when you say "careful what you support when flying with certain companies" I just didn't want to get into that on here. Theres reasons I haven't been up in the past couple years and you just tactfully touched on most(but not all) of them....... Anyways thanks for the heads up as otherwise I would not have really known as its not a place I fish regularly. -

maybe your right I just called my friend and even he says he thinks I am thinking of a different lake.....sorry I fished a lotta lakes that year....... anybody got any pics of LOTF? Anyways I didn't have a digital cam back then so I will to try and dig through my boxes and see if I can find some pics...... I am still not 100% convinced that I am wrong...... LOL despite the fact everyone tells me I am wrong edit it.....Gopherboy I had to really think about this and well sounds like I was not confusing the lake but it sounds like its possible I did miss i'd the fish...... before we went the first time I remember a guy at the shop in jasper who told me about the heli outfit said it was mainly cutts and some brookies could sometimes be caught in the outflow and the outflow creek. And I also think someone at the heli also confirmed this. When we got out of the heli we started fishing pretty close to the outflow and we immediately started catching some decent sized cutts and I caught 2 6-8 inchers that I assumed were brookies (all off the surface) I remember that they were definately without a doubt a redish brown colour and like all fish I just popped the hook and let em go......... but in all honestly I suppose they could have been little bull trout...... At that time I had never caught a bull trout that was anything other then the usual silver sorta colour and it wasn't until our second trip in to that lake that we heard there were bulls in there so I had just assumed that they were brookies........ so if I am wrong sorry for the knee jerk reaction to assume you were wrong but I am still not 100 % convinced either way as I can't remember the fish and their markings well enough to say and I am not convinced that theres no possible way brookies could be there....... -

well I doubt that I am wrong and I didn't know a brookie but its been three years or so so let me see if I can find a pic........ PS how do you know there are know brookies in there? Just because the icefields heli site says so? -
from what I understand, and hopefully someone will correct if I am wrong, there are no species of hellgramite in alberta....... I could be wrong but this site seems to support this theory. http://bio-ditrl.sunsite.ualberta.ca/searc..._find=dobsonfly I also believe after some reading that some people do misrepresent (likely not purposefully) hellgramite patterns and confuse the insects with others..... I do use 1 pattern that is called a hellgramite by the producer but is actually just a stonefly....... really neat bugs dobsonflies but man they are kinda scary lookin http://www.whatsthatbug.com/dobs_2.html

Don't think the length of this cold snap is gonna be enough to do it....... One SRD guy told me it takes about 2 weeks of uninterupted -20 weather to kill them. But maybe since its significantly colder then that it will make a difference. Hope so.

Not gonna lie I just skimmed the article and though I am not opposed to Nuclear power in this case the repairs should have been made and then it should have been fired up...... But I know absolutely nothing about nuclear power so its simply an uneducated opinion

lonefisher replied to snakeman's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Hey tako what uniform is that? Nice fish by the way. -
Just curious now that you mention it are the marabou flies tied with the marabou wrapped like a hackle sorta? Tied some salmon flies for a buddy with that style this summer...... They have great action in the water

believe it or not I have seen an albino moose before. Up horsecreek road near Cochrane. No jokes it was about 8-9 years ago. there were 2 moose about the same age 2 years old is what I had figured...... wonder if he/she is still kickin around........ if it was a Bull I am sure I woulda heard about the trophy if he had been taken so I assume its still around

Hydro---- I didn't know Canmore was on the way to heaven Also you will have to introduce me to your travel agent as I also didn't know you were allowed to go back and forth from there In all seriousness I dislike both Calgary and Edmonton only on the basis that I dislike big cities....... but as far as cities go both Edmonton and Calgary are pretty good..... they just need more gravel roads. and maybe a cow or 2 of the non plastic variety
-
LMAO I love Canmore even more after reading this thread. Very little crime, worst part of traffic is the occaisional train and the Photo radar guy in the grey truck.... Only place better was back on the farm where the only thing to hold up the drive was the odd unruly bull on the driveway........ Takes 60 seconds to hit the FTR outta the front door......

been to both and my one reccomendation is don't rush an early season trip wait till august when the cutts are feeding best and the weather is the most stable. We got snowed on on our June trip to landslide and it was late June and the lake was still blown out and unfishable. A july trip to LOTF was even poor fishing when we had relatively bad weather...... Be flexible and wait until you have an excellent forecast. Had a blast at LOTF in august lots of wlling cutts and some brookies as well...... never caught any bulls but never really targeted them. Also 2$ per lb is gonna add up big time if you plan to heli and overnight...... like to the point of it being debateable as to whether its worth it...... If I heli again I will either plan a long trip to make the poundage cost worth it or I will just go for 1 day pack light and take first copter in last copter out....... -
yeah I got a couple rods that look like that wes but they have seen a heck of a lot of casting and they are not warrantyable so I try hard not to break em but theres no doubt that a line can wear out a guide....... I haven't tried the snakeskin though but it just seems to me that it will wear the guides faster..... But if you have a good lifetime warranty and worn guides bother you then you can always "accidently break" your rod and get a replacement for a relatively low price...... edit in - I would not let the guide thing turn me off the snakeskin but the finger burn thing has me wondering
-
Yeah the show looks really good this year. I have to say though I did more standing around and BSing about fishing then I did actually looking at stuff. I think thats the best part though. Then I got thinking imagine there was beer........ Got me thinking that Calgary needs a Flyfishing Bar..... I would definately spend more time in Calgary

sweet...... your gonna sell a lotta stuff I bet I definately will be stopping by the booth tonight -
Being a person with little education on fish farming i feel the only good thing about them is that without them native/ wild species would be further exploited for food ect. But it seems to me that from what I have heard that the problems associated with fish farms, like the ones you have noted above, seem to add new problems...... Where the balance is and whether they are good or not i can't really say as I don't know all the ins and outs of the topic...... some of the BC boys on here might have a better understanding of the topic though..... I will watch this thread with interest.
