  1. I have had the dis-pleasure of watching a flock of cormorants fishing this morning in the Elbow river. For those of you who don't know what these birds do, they are a scourage of rivers and lakes in the East and are now establishing their presence in our lakes and streams in Alberta. They have the ability to dive up to 50' can eat enormous amounts of fish and are a real danger to our fish and our stocking programs. But, being that they are a protected species (I think) there is little we can do to "cull" them. In doing some research, I have found areas of Ontario that have huge flocks of these predators decimating lakes and rivers as they have voracious appetites. Their excrement is extremely toxic and has the ability to kill trees and vegetation that surround their nesting sites. They have "cleaned" out certain area lakes and rivers in Ontario and many in the East are concerned about their increasing numbers from which I have learned are multiplying at an alarming rate. Now that they are establishing their numbers in the West, it won't be long before their behaviour will be recognized as a huge detriment to our fish numbers. What can be done? Who has done research on these birds and their ability to impact the fish numbers out here in the West? Probably no one. They differ from the Pelican as they can swim extremely fast and have the ability to swim long distances underwater. The Pelican is larger, slower and accoring to Guides on the Missouri in Montana, usually are only able to catch whitefish as according to them, trout are faster and have better ability to escape predation than whitties. Anybody have any more info you can add to this thread? I am only commenting on the research I have done and I am by no means an"expert". But, I do know first hand how they can "clean" out populations of stocked and wild fish. FHD
  2. Get out of the water, avoid hanging out under trees, let go of your lightning rod (fly rod) and huddle under a bank overhang until the storm passes. FHD
  3. Has anybody got suggestions/experience or opinions for cost/quality/charge rate/Sellers for a smaller portable solar panel that can be used to charge a battery in a camper. The only draw on the battery will be the the interior lights as I believe propane is used for the fridges aren't they? Thanks in advance. FHD
  4. I was crusing the net today and found this. Time to ponder different sources of energy. Read the top and scroll down to the bottom and watch both videos on how it is done. http://www.electricitybook.com/composting-for-heat/ FHD
  5. I woulda tried a large Adams, but I wasn't invited! Brunsies statement again huh? Sigh......NO LAKE FOR YOU! Come back....One YEAR! FHD
  6. Boy. I would say it is easy to speak when you don't know what a person with a disability goes through. Speaking with knowledge of the "handicapped" I have problems with the comparisons. As someone else said, sit in a wheelchair and see if life is "that easy" !? One of the most stupid comments and comparisons I have seen in a while. FHD
  7. Try buying some blood meal, put about 1/3 of a soup can full and bury in your garden with the lip of the can just above the dirt and add a small amount of water to moisten the meal. Bury a few around your flower bed perimeter and re-fill as necessary over the summer. FHD
  8. Best to not go by yourself too as you are unfamiliar with the river and it's banks. Lots of dangerous snags, beaver holes and such. Go around the Canmore bridge and bring a friend. With the snow, I wouldn't be venturing too far! Nature is unforgiving and the water is cold. FHD
  9. LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Olympic 400 metres champ LaShawn Merritt of the United States has been suspended after testing positive for an anabolic steroid contained in an over-the-counter penis enlargement product. His response:"To know that I've tested positive as a result of a product that I used for personal reasons is extremely difficult to wrap my hands around". I guess it worked! FHD
  10. I'm with ya Lynn. Been there last year where my dog got dehydrated from a ham bone as some may remember. Ham is cured with salt. Being that my boy is only 4 lbs. the salt started to solidify in his body blocking his digestive tract. Dogs don't process salt well either! Who knew? I sure found out quickly that the C.A.R.E. centre provided extremely good treatment to my pal. At a cost of about $1k a day!!! But, what was the alternative.....ah no, he was only 14 months old so he still had some living to do. The staff thanked me for saving him when I went to pay for him after he recovered. They said few would have done so and would have done the "dirty deed" instead. I couldn't. So now, I'm trying to get my ?$K worth of lovin out of him. He better live forever 'cuz he owes me!!! FHD
  11. umm...wow! memories for the ages... FHD

  14. For me, I like to grow Roses. I have about 30-40 plants in my yard. My wife was disabled in a car accident in 2001 and I went to get her some roses for Mom's Day and thought that if I was going to spend $35 on a bunch, why not buy the plants and grow them. She enjoys having her cut flowers in the house in the summer and the yard looks so beautiful throughout the spring and summer growing season. Her back yard is a "safe haven" from the world with her small swimming pool and the bright colors of the blooms. It's the small things in life that matter to us. What makes my wife happy....makes me happy. FHD

  16. We at AHS got an email from Duckett last week "asking" for us to find ways to reduce costs. Why? So he can reduce staff costs with the ideas and so he can collect his "bonuses". Um... YA RIGHT! I'm on it Stevie! FHD
  17. Always sad to here these stories. My thoughts and prayers are with you and his friends/family. Lesson: Life is short, open your eyes and breathe it all in for it may be over soon. FHD
  18. As a health care support worker, I have been in contact with a nurse who is giving these vaccines. First some facts from her: 1. The vaccine has an "inactivated virus" as part of the serum and you can not get the flu from the vaccine. 2. The vaccine base has the same components contained in the vaccines given to Europeans for flu type "A and B" since 1997. Since that time, there have been over 42 million of these shots given to people. So it is safe and documents as such. 3. According to my nurse friend, most the sicknesses (flus) that have been reported are of the H1N1 variety and not "A or B' type. 4. The most serious symptom of the H1N1 appears to be "problems with breathing". Her advice, if you are sick and think you have the flu and experience difficulty breathing, GO TO A HEALTH CARE FACILITY IMMEDIATELY!! 5. This strain of flu seems to be attacking pregnant women and children under 13 years with the most severe symptoms. As I said, I am a health care support worker. I am no expert on this. I am only relaying information that I believe to be true so more of you can make a more informed decision on if you want/should have the shot as a preventitive measure. One in four are predicated to come down with symptoms of this particular strain of flu. It's your choice...... FHD
  19. Since I commented on the Carseland weir fish ladder this morning, I was looking at other designs of ladders and found this one on the Columbia in the States. This design would be more appropriate on a smaller scale for the Bow, don't you think? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bonneville_Ladder.jpg FHD
  20. While it's just that they are paying for this type of mistake, TU has a big job with their programs once this sort of thing occurs. Such a shame to see really. FHD
