Anyone Here Dealing With Sciatica
fishinhogdaddy replied to robert's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
There are certain places around town (Advanced Spinal Care at Holy Cross Site is one. But $$$) that offer what is called "Prolotherapy". In reading up on it, it is sugar water injected at certain sites in your body to help nerve regeneration. Although nerves regenerate at a very slow rate of about 1mm a month, some find relief, some don't. Also, newer age clinics offer "Laser Therapy". Some Chronic Pain patients experience remarked reduction of pain in as little as a few sessions. I will say I haven't been through any of this but I do have a significant other who is also suffering due to an MVA. Most people with back pain as I have, learn to live with it. But, it' not an easy life. Mine is tolerable for the most part but when I need an adjustment, I make my way to my back cracker. Sad to see so many people suffering. My thoughts to all of you for a pain free day! Cheers....FHD -
I bought a TV from Florida. Had it shipped by DHL (prepaid by seller) to their warehouse in the NE. Went there, got the GST and duty bills, drove the short distance to the Canada Customs centre, paid GST, duty went back to DHL and picked up the TV and still got the TV for around $1K less than what it was selling here. Another. Bought some Fathead removable life size posters from their American website. They shipped to me and the total for shipping, GST and duty was almost as much as the purchase. You HAVE to do your homework beforehand. As someone already stated, you can get dinged 4-6 weeks later, especially by UPS. With the weight of your purchase, it would have to come by transport. Picking up in the US. is the best option. FHD

Good Day Everyone. As I prepare for a holiday in the BC interior to fish one of my favorite lakes, I came upon an article from Brian Chan regarding the use of throat pumps to accurately determine what the fish are feeding on. I have never used one and would like to know how to do it. I realize that this action could cause some damage to the fish if not done properly. So, lets hear it! Who does this and how is it done without hurting the fish? FHD

White River Waders
fishinhogdaddy replied to LlamaLeach's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Two outings and mine were a wetsuit. Simms like others have said. Pricey but when you buy three pair of cheapos you could buy the Simms. FHD -
I don't think making it manditory would be accepted, other than that I would like to the opportunity to attend one, if I chose. I have seen alot of people that don't load their travel trailers properly to insure they rolling on a level plane. I have seen many that are unbalanced as a result of not using an equalizer hitch properly. The more info availabe the better in my books. FHD

What Makes An Experienced Fisherman?
fishinhogdaddy replied to cgyguy's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Sigh. Just another wave of abuse I face while fishing with you. At least I can "direct' a driftboat and you thought I was just inexperienced when we ran into the shoreline while you fished up front! Oh ya, and leave that bloody airhorn at home next time we are in the bush fishing with the bears. I'm still picking pine needles outta my forehead from your "discreet" blasts two inches from my ear! @#$% FHD -
Who You Voting For?

Hmm. Sounds like Aerosmith was around the Flames dressing room again last night. "Same old song and dance, my friends". Those young Oil look exciting. Gonna be a long season me thinks for the Flames. I wonder how long it's gonna take for calls for The Sutters heads? Games like last night aren't going to be tolerated for too long by the fans. I know I will be watching the younger Oil when I have a chance. Did I say that? As a lifelong Calgarian, boy, if Dad were alive, he'd about kick my A$$ around the house for saying that! FHD

Honesty Is The Best Policy
fishinhogdaddy replied to cgyguy's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
FINALLY, cgyguy you said it. What others (me) are thinking. Maybe those "secret" spots wouldn't be so sought after if there were "some" truth to fishing reports from some. Being that I also have 30+ years into flyfishing, consider myself as somewhat of an accomplished fisherman (not professing to be an expert), it makes no sense that after floating the river many times, polling the fishers that one will come back and say they caught multitudes of fish on the same day others catch few. Too many stories and egos I think. BUT, if you aren't "padding" your catch rates, good on ya. But, others are skeptical. Meaning me. FHD -
B.c Valley Cutts-rejected!
fishinhogdaddy replied to fishinhogdaddy's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Nope. Just the area cgyguy and you talked about. Nice area. Damn maddening tho. LOL -
We headed out Fairmont B.C. way last weekend. Even though we were required to buy a daily $20 license to fish the waters as well as the non-resident license, I found the area very pretty and inviting. From the clean, free campsites in the boonies to the free firewood down any logging road, I can justify spending the extra money to fish some of their cold pristine waters. People from the Valley seem to care about their backcountry as mostly locals frequent the area. Not once did I look down to find a candy bar wrapper or worst of all, a used tub that contained bait or strewn beer cans everywhere. We were directed to a "secret" spot which required us to follow animal trails to a small tributary where the banks show no signs of others boots or garbage. As we rigged up, we saw no risers. As soon as we were set, the cutts were rising everywhere! Being an experienced fly fisher for over 35 years, I found the fish to be exceptionally selective. My partner and I would cast to the risers over and over again switching flies after 6 or so casts. We saw two different hatches and matched them as closely as possible with what we had brought streamside. Some nice size fish were splashing about but weren't about to be fooled by our immitations. We found it both frustrating and laughable as any other smaller creek in southern AB. would have given up fish to our offerings. Being where we were, the fish would not see the amount of fishing pressure that our southwest areas normally would. It was quite amazing that we weren't able to at least land one of these beautiful Cutts. My partner had one on for a few seconds but lost it. We worked the run for over 2 1/2 hours constantly changing flies and tactics to no avail. It was worth a chuckle when my partner would stop to change flies, the fish were rising within arms reach! "NO FISHIES FOR YOU, COME BACK ONE YEAR!!" is all I could hear in my head. The abundance of wildlife was amazing considering in the same camping area, hunters were present. Sounds of the Elk buggling in the early morning were what we woke to. The nice weather in the area for the weekend and GREAT FRIENDS to share the majesty of the area with were very special. A weekend not to forget. Looking forward to next year when I am able to escape to the area again. But for now, back to reality and work. Sigh..... FHD

Lake Athabasca Fish-oilsands Related?
fishinhogdaddy replied to fishinhogdaddy's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Being that it takes years to monitor and link pollution to the tailings and effulent from any site, I'm of the opinion that it is far too late to raise the flag. The damage is done and we most likely will not be able to "undo" it. Now, in the coming months and years we will find out how far reaching this mess is. I feel sorry for the people who depend on this river and the land for their livelihood. FHD -

Anyone been out lately? I would assume that the usual flies (cj, pn, caddis) would work. Thanks in advance for your replies. FHD

We were about to drift last Saturday from FC and my partner saw a lady of foreign descent with a Brown in a white bag which was about 24" and a younger fella with another white bag with at least four or five smaller fish in it. We watched as they returned to their vehicle, deposited the fish into a cooler, rigged up their lines again(couldn't tell if they were using bait, but it looked like they were using treble hooks) and returned to the water. Surprisingly, when the rap line was called the Officer was in the park and immediately made his way to the area. He found the couple and he was last seen hauling out of the coolers (they had two) a bunch of fish. Being that the RAP line is "confidential", he winked at us as we went to put our boat in. It looked as if they were facing some charges. Karma, my friends, Karma. FHD

Quad Crackdown Finally Coming
fishinhogdaddy replied to Neil Waugh's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Done mine. Thanks Neil. FHD -
I have had the dis-pleasure of watching a flock of cormorants fishing this morning in the Elbow river. For those of you who don't know what these birds do, they are a scourage of rivers and lakes in the East and are now establishing their presence in our lakes and streams in Alberta. They have the ability to dive up to 50' can eat enormous amounts of fish and are a real danger to our fish and our stocking programs. But, being that they are a protected species (I think) there is little we can do to "cull" them. In doing some research, I have found areas of Ontario that have huge flocks of these predators decimating lakes and rivers as they have voracious appetites. Their excrement is extremely toxic and has the ability to kill trees and vegetation that surround their nesting sites. They have "cleaned" out certain area lakes and rivers in Ontario and many in the East are concerned about their increasing numbers from which I have learned are multiplying at an alarming rate. Now that they are establishing their numbers in the West, it won't be long before their behaviour will be recognized as a huge detriment to our fish numbers. What can be done? Who has done research on these birds and their ability to impact the fish numbers out here in the West? Probably no one. They differ from the Pelican as they can swim extremely fast and have the ability to swim long distances underwater. The Pelican is larger, slower and accoring to Guides on the Missouri in Montana, usually are only able to catch whitefish as according to them, trout are faster and have better ability to escape predation than whitties. Anybody have any more info you can add to this thread? I am only commenting on the research I have done and I am by no means an"expert". But, I do know first hand how they can "clean" out populations of stocked and wild fish. FHD

Lightning Strikes Tuber

Get out of the water, avoid hanging out under trees, let go of your lightning rod (fly rod) and huddle under a bank overhang until the storm passes. FHD
