i have 5mm neopreens - wait for a sale on at one of the shops. i picked mine up for $112 last february. i personally would not go with the walmart specials. yes you can wear whatever boots you want. i have used both my hiking boots and my wading boots. watch for size. my wading boots are 2 sizes bigger than my hiking boots to make room for the waders and a pair of warm socks. i only wear my waders fall -to spring. summer is all wet wading. avoid straight rubber soled (gum boot) type boots, go for something with cleats or felt or a combo of both. if you are taller than 5'3", , you dont really need to get in deeper than your knees. that being for normal people, which is midthigh on me and mid calf deep on maxwell. a nice walking stick that can be clipped to your vest is also helpful at times. if you are concerned about a PDF, yes you would look like a dork and we would all know who you are out there on the river, but at least you would be safe... or you can take a look at the fly fishing vests with the inflateable pdf. it does not have enough pockets in my opinion and would be more beneficial for a pontoon or canoe. i'm not even going to touch the math. happy wading

umm, what happens when you can see both? that was very trippy. no mind altering substances used. when i first looked at her she was going clock wise. then she was going counter clockwise. now i can make her change at will. even more odd was my room mate was looking at her at the same time and could only see her going clockwise whilst i was watching her go counter clockwise. i have shivers... eire

thanks for the clarification, and oddly, i do have wire small enough and eyes of a bat sans radar/sonar

i would hate to disappoint you but... a little from colum A and a little from colum B. i would have had to have seen him to tell you for sure as it could go either way, but i have seen him be like that when completely sober. i dont think that Tiger actually coached the Voodoo, but i think he was involved in the ownership somehow. but don't quote me on that.

so is the body just a little build up of the thread? before or after winding the hackle?
-
definately a whisky and drambuie induced concoction. well done.

i don't believe you. i've heard otherwise on both accounts. lol definately let me know how it works out. i am curious. this pattern works very well for me on small streams even when there isn't a hatch on. maybe BECAUSE there isn't a hatch. i don't know. i have used it on the bow, but no success with it yet.

Tiger williams is awesome. i'm going to show my age a little here. i went to school with his son Ben. After his retirement, he stayed in Vancouver - West Van actually. We would meet up with him at the dog park or the shopping centre. his on however, got suspended in grade 2 for swearing at a teacher and getting in to fights. HUMMM. lost track of ben after elementary school. Tiger was quite the enforcer. a little arogant, but a sweetheart of a guy. definately look up the canucks of the mid 80's.

went ice fishing there, i have yet to make it in the summer. we hauled out 2 suckers and about 6 rainbows over a few hours.

sort of a sedge. it can have the movement of a sedge if you skate it across the water, expecially when mending. but to be honest. i got the pattern from a friend who got it from a shop in the town nearest to the rivers he fishes, and they got it from an oldtimer in the area. i don't even know what the name of the pattern is. i just copied the pattern from the original fly from the shop. i'm not sure if it is even supposed to be a sedge. all i know is that it works when nothing else will but mostly for cutthroats and rainbows. tie up a few and let me know how it works on your side of the pond

the pike and the bull trout like them big. big fish need big food i need to do up a couple of those for next summer

thanks everyone. muchly appreciated. great video scotfly

i got a little crazy on the calfs tail with this one. you could probably do with 1/2 that amount. this is a great pattern for the carbondale and castle river basins for cutts. it is very visable even in the foam and stays afloat very well even without gink or bugfloat i think i used furnace hackle on this one

i borrowed the picture from the UK board - photo by Tango. for the life of me i can not fold a feather like this. i understand the principle but i cant seem to get the the feather fibers to fold over and stay there when i palmer it. any suggestions, hints, tips?

congrats on the coho, i love the fly. i tied up a couple similar to that one. nice work for only a short time tying.

groan. ok, i admit, i giggled

not many opera singers give me goosebumps and i could feel the tears start to well up. that was beautiful

instead of fireline, i use braided stainless steel. comes in a roll from the craft store for around $5. specifically it is for jewellery making but oddly it is marked as 15lb test. works great for adding both the stinger and for adding an extended tail above body using beads without the hook - great for a dragon or damsel fly pattern. gives a lot of movement and flash. you can also use a tube crimp at the end of the loop to add on krystal flash.

i have a pattern that is very similar and works extremely well on cutthroat here. i use deer hair for the tail, a small clump of calfs tail for a wing set just behind the hackle, it also serves as an indicator on the water. i got a little excited with the calfs tail on this one, thinned out a bit and it looks better. but it worked all the same

i have a friend who is a taxidermist. he gave me a bunch of polar bear hair last year. i will put in a request for cuttings if he gets another one in. flytyer, doc, would you be interested?

lol, Harry, what the hell was that?

interesting this topic would come up. as knotlikely mentioned, we were walking along, a little north of where we would normally fish due to some angler traffic, as we crossed the side channel about to fish and we noticed this half eaten rotting carcas laying off to the side. i think we spent about 5 min discussing whether or not either of us had ever heard of burbot in the bow. how odd that i had never heard this before, let alone seen one. humm. strange.
