  1. hell, i just spent 120.00 just on stuff i needed for tying beaded flies because someone decided the swap was all about beaded flies. initial investments $20.00, i loved it so much i went out and bought a bunch of stuff to make different kinds of beaded flies. they look really pretty. my estimate was just for hardware, books, tools, eyes and misc thread, chenielle, portible gear bag, boxes and thingy holders i get 99% of my fur and feathers from a taxidermist who gives it to me for free from his pile of cuttings. but if i had had to buy all of my fur and feathers, based on the size of the pieces. you could add on another $1000. hey i was just talking to someone about that last night, on my most recent road trip, i saw 2 raccoons on the road and started thinking... that would make an interesting fly pattern, except the hide is too thick to deal with. lol. i then thought to myself. bad though, not going there.
  2. i'm trying to double my chances... Exactly
  3. i'm trying to double my chances... Exactly
  4. lucky boy, does she realize tying is addictive and you'll probably end up spending around $500 on a vice, tools and misc other supplies? i'm being conservative. if i added up all my tying things i easily have at least $1000 worth of stuff. but then again, i have been collecting supplies for years if i can find my box o'crap, i probably have a bunch of extra hair and such if you want some to get you started. is fly tying tuesdays a guy thing or a select few invities or is it an open thing? i'm always open to learning things and trying out new patterns.
  5. is she single?
  6. nice birchy... lol how come black bears aren't only black? if polar bear hair isn't actually white but translucent and only looks white because it is absorbing all of the other colours and refracting the 'non' colour, why is every patch of polar bear hair in my fly tying crap yellowish? how come there arent any words in the english language that rhyme with 'orange' or 'silver'
  7. true, but you do need a work visa if you plan on staying there for a bit and want to earn some cash on the crappy days you aren't fishing. unless of course you have wealthy parents or hold up a bank on your way to the airport. Canada has an agreement with many countries who do not require a 'travel' visa in order to visit for less than 90 days but they wont let you work. i agree with rusty and wongrs. an exchange program would be a good way to continue your education and travel.
  8. purple. if you pull the wings of a fly, do you call it a walk?
  9. here is my 2 cents for what it is worth... when everything that should work doesnt, try the ugliest, worst looking, ratty, most god awful thing in your case (size 14 - 16) that is similar to the perfect, beautiful dry flies you have been using. if that doesn't work, try something completely wrong that shouldnt work at all for whatever body of water you are in and the fish that are there. it's the monty python theory... "And Now For Something Completely Different!" be damned if it doesnt work 99% of the time. if it still doesnt work, give up and go to the bar, it's been a long and frustrating day. you need a drink
  10. thanks Dave. but alas, no it is a guy out from Halifax. never met him before but offered to take him for a tour. i think he is planning on fishing the Bow in the evenings after his meeting so i don't want to duplicate, thought i would take him somewhere different with picture opertunities and the chance of wild life. other than the dead gopher i saw floating down the bow like the last time i was out. wongrs, the oldman might be a bit far. were you thinking the gap? from black diamond i can hit the hwy 22/ hwy 3 turn off in an hour... at 125k so i would imagine the maycroft turn would be 40min from black diamond. not sure exactly how much time we are going to have. we wont get out of town until after noon. i did fish the FTR from hwy 3 to 532 earlier in the season, racehorse, vicary, dutch and livingstone all were great. just not sure if i want to much further south than 532. if you have any ideas, pm me. i would appreciate it. thanks again guys. ur great. i love it here. everyone is so nice.
  11. oh what the hell. do share, i havent heard it
  12. i need a little advice. i have a friend in town sunday afternoon only. not keen on fishing the bow - traffic and all the yahoos when i don't fish in town i head south to crowsnest area and havent fished anything in between. any suggestions on sheep or highwood, which is producing and has a little less traffic. and i need an access point because i'm not exactly sure how to get to them in all honesty. or should i bite the bullet and high tail it out to the jumping pound access in k country and allen bill pond on the way back. second thought, i need to check my regs to what is still open for catch and release. anyway, ideas are needed. thanks
  13. OMG. that was too funny. i'm crying here. definately NOT deep enough. damn it all anyway. and lonefisher, you're right. don't think the pike would want him either.
  14. i feel shame yes i did. i bet gene simmons could do it. couldn't "I'm" be considered a complete sentance also..? you wouldnt say it because it sounds silly but it still has the noun and verb. or do contractions count?
  15. i have a couple of red floss ones, a red wire wrap one is heavy the other is really light - not sure but i think it is a plastic wrapping, it doesnt sink and i have a few brownish pink cheinelle (sp?). in my newly accquired tying glass bead flies, there are a few worm patterns tied with beads, dont know how productive they are. but they look pretty
  16. not a clue, but looks easy enough to replicate
  17. ah, i get the corilation. yikes on the bear encounter.
  18. ex-travel agent here. i was lucky, finished school and then went to work - pay sucked but got to travel a lot. i'm in the 'do what your heart desires' group. i'm in the middle of seriously considering selling the house, quitting the job, finding a place to buy where i can live mortgage free and work at some where like tim hortons or walmart - mindless work and then travelling for a few months a year and working as i travel. anyway, back to the fishing/travelling thing. although nz may not be that original, i do have a friend who is a travel agent and is from nz, with a number of friends down there. she may be able to point you in that direction. she has also said the fishing there is amazing. other ideas, carribean (ocean fly fishing the shallows), pategonia, europe. try for work permits/visas so you can work while you are away. research fly fishing destination magazines and see if you can find a speciality travel agency. might ask at whatever local fishing store you frequent. i do have a canadian travel industry guide for info - but the link is at work. if you want me to do any leg work for you, pm me. the benefit of travelling while you are under the age of 30 is that most countries will grant working travel visas without much hassle, such as having enough money in your bank account to survive on while you are in that country for 6 months. i have known people who had to prove they had at least 50K in the bank before a just an entry visa was granted never mind the work visa, which is usually more difficult to get.
  19. i was hoping he used my ex...
  20. sweet, gotta love it. i have fond yet not so fond memories of catching crab in the juan de fuca. many hours of listening to my dad and brother swearing at traps, bait, each other, crabs, the weather and so on. i guess we weren't so nice as to use the pilers, at least from what i remember, there was usually either a hammer or just shear brute strength used to rip the claw off. and a lot of 'i'm not putting my hand in there this time, you do it...' thanks for the memories. good times, good times. brought a smile to my face.
  21. sorry to derail the hijacked thread but... for those of us who don't know the story, why is there a grizzly bear licking that man's face and not chewing it off? there has to be some reason because i don't know anyone crazy enough to cuddle with a grizzly bear and lived to tell about it. and i know A LOT of crazy people is this one just young or trained??? man or bear - which ever
  22. there must be a number of people who just come on to the forum to read the info but are uncomfortable posting or think they don't have anything important to add. is there anyway of doing a poll for members with 0 posts or the arduous job of sending out messages/emails asking for a usage response. i am a member of the fish alberta forum but i have never posted as i really didnt find the people very approachable to pose questions to and also any posts not related to or in relation to a sponsored/approved topic/company/advertising etc always gets deleted. but i still pop on from time to time to read the updates, notices and see what a few people have been up to.
  23. actually, if you simplify the fishermen and have dark grey, silver and black, it might not be that difficult. that would be awesome as a logo
  24. thanks all, i didn't find it in portland but i did manage to find it right where i left it at the beading store. paid 2x more than i should have but no body else had it and i really wanted a copy. early birthday present to me.
  25. rob, i have my tag for mule deer for this season. i also have a friend who is a taxidermist and a few other friends with tags. we aren't going until mid-october. but i will let you know if i fill my tag and i can get the hide tanned/dried sufficiently. i will also check my 'stash' of deer hair - chances are, somewhere in my giant box o'crap and miscellanious hair/supplies, i have mule deer hair. not sure from what body part. i will try to find straight stuff. how much exactly would you like??? and is there anything else you need?
