  1. did you let tyrell museum know? they would probably be interested in it as well. you never know, they could be missing that body part from one of their own species hidden in the back, just waiting for that last piece to assemble and put out on display. i'd send the picture to my uncle but he is an anthropologist (phd) and archeologist not a paelontologist, although i'm sure he knows someone who might be interested
  2. old beer, yumm, that's appetizing. why don't i drink beer again? next time i am in mexico - january - i will ask for fresh beer and see how it goes.
  3. had the rod, had the flies. forgot the reel... had to use my 8wt instead. a little heavy for a full day of drifting and nymphing
  4. you are probably looking for a fishing response but the only places i have fished are on the gold river and in campbell river, a few hours to the north and not condusive for a quick trip with limited time. if you cant find anything fishing wise, i suggest the forestry museum. very good, full of history, good way to kill a few hours and teach the kids something.
  5. ooooooo, those are pretty. i wish i had that kind of patience to tie such beauties.
  6. oh, ick. i have never understood this. not that i am a beer drinker in the first place but, ick
  7. nice pic. i will have to follow them around as well.
  8. gravitational pull around edmonton fluctuates between fall and spring? magnetic disturbance? not something i have noticed, probably because i am more surprised than the fish that i actually have a fish on the end of my line.
  9. even a bad day fishing is a good day. sweet looking dog. welcome to calgary and to the forum hawkeye
  10. now this may seem like an odd set up but i came about because i was perched on a ledge in desperate need of leader due to some previous fish issues that i wont get into but... to start i tie my leader directly to my WF6F line. there are a million reasons and other ways to do it, but it has always worked for me. earlier this year i was fishing grotto pond on a bright and fairly clear day, very clear water. i was using 8lb test leader down to 4lb mono. the fish stopped looked at the fly, and continued on. another friend suggested switching to flouro. what the hell, i thought, not catching anything anyway. i did my usual blood knot with lots of spit for lubrication, again 8lb test mono to 4lb flouro - no intermediary and no breakage or problems. still didnt catch anything but at least the fish stopped looking at the line and started approching the fly. my poor presentation with a wet fly i'm sure was the issue there. later in the season, i discovered the problem with mono to flouro could have been also the 8lb to 4lb, not sure what the happened exactly. the knot didnt break at the junction but somewhere between the tippet and the fly. and this was once i actually had a fish on. so it broke me off. must have been a good one. my buddy on the other side of the gorge told me to try the flouro as a leader. so he tyed his 12lb flouro on to his line and casted it over to me. note i still had the 8lb on. so i cut that off and did a nail knot with a piece of grass as i do not carry nails with me, hanging off a rock with my rod in my teeth. long story short - i now have 12 flouro as my leader tied directly to my WF6F line and tied down to 8 and 4lb for tippet. works great, no problems and have caught more fish with dries that way and a few more while nymphing than i had with my other set up. i have not had it break or a fish break me off yet.
  11. for hunting gear, go to wholesale sports in the south - deerfoot meadows mall by the brick and superstore. if you are in need of a fire arm or just gear - calls, tags etc, ask for brent. - just tell him that fishing girl sent you. he should know who you are talking about. need a bow? - go to wholesale, russell's, calgary archery centre or Jimbow's if you are looking camping gear, wholesale, camper's village as for fishing, it depends on what you need. in general and for nothing specialized or specific you can try wholesale, russells or the fishing hole. more specialized thing or something specific troutfitters, fish tails and country pleasures. wholesale fishing department ask for George W. or either Mike for fly stuff. over at russells kurt is great. both the guys at troutfitters were great but i can't remember their names and i have only been to the fishing hole once but the manager was very helpful. for just general crap - canadian tire and walmart will do
  12. you're in canada - use chesterfield not couch. apparently it's 'chair' don't you think your wife would mind? but i would gladly share including the cuban cigars. shipping and insurance... damn. that is far too depressing, i'm going back to my fly tying.
  13. there is something to be said for fur rubbing...
  14. hummm, i have a thought forming. **smell of smoke fills the air** it will be something on the rocks. i just have to figure it out. appropriate both fly wise and alcohol based. too bad i only drink rye and scotch. neither one of them needs to be on the rocks.
  15. sounds like a great scotch... **sigh** i have 2 cuban cigars here too. **cry** anyone have $9500CAD i could borrow? i think i can come up with the $4.63 because i haven't spent it on fly tying material yet. oh wait, i bought olive grizzly marabou yesterday. never mind could you decode the first part of - FOMCLMFAO, for me please? i got the laughing my F*&^^ ing a** off part but clueless on the first. and you might as well decode the other one for me while ur at it.
  16. to make it easy for you Hawkeye. the bow is open all year from the weir at 17Ave/deerfoot - south except for the tributaries in the bird sancutary. stay on the main river and you will be fine. and dont fish right at the weir. man made obstructions have other regulations - no fishing within 25 meters i believe. as for locations to go... i dont fish the bow a lot, you could try entry from southland dog park or 130AVE from deerfoot chuck some streamers or try nymphing. have fun and tight lines
  17. i pick up if i have the arms or back pack to carry it back in. as for my own junk, always take it with me. if i can carry it in, i can carry it out. i have one pocket dedicated to my cigarette butts, but failing that - i also have a portable ashtray. holds 6 butts, snuff it out and put it in the ashtray, dump at next garbage can. got it at a gas station and have given a few away. very handy.
  18. lol. AL. i've been slaving away at my flies for the UK swap. actually, i am house sitting and have been out every night and not near a computer. ok, previous to going to the whisky tasting, i had tried a few different whiskies and found that prior to the tasting my favourite was glenfidich 18yr ancient reserve. the 15 was decent and wont touch the 12 yr. so after the tasting of which we had 6 different kinds ranging from 8 - 18 years, i decided my favourite was Glenfarclas 17yr, next was an 18yr bowmore? i have to check my sheet. the 8, 10, 11 and 2 - 12 yr were very, umm... harsh. the 8yr still tasted like straight alcohol. the 12yr from isle of islay was a little too smokey, kind of tasted like licking the ashes of a campfire with some moss and dirt thrown in for good messure. no bad but still could have used a little more time. the bowmore - also coastal/island scotch was smokey but the smoke was more subtle and the other flavours came through much better. for me, i will stick with speyside whiskies. i can appreciate the flavours without being over run by 1 strong flavour whether that be smoke or alcohol. i think i need that subtly. and i was functional the next morning. anyone up for a scotch and cigar night???
  19. did anyone hit on patience? and more patience. i guess it goes in hand with attitude. i remember when i started fly fishing agian (after 9 years of not) and i read as many books as i possibly could and still for the first few years, except for the odd fluke, i didnt catch much of anything. i looked at it as casting practice, learn to read the water. i fished mostly with dries - learn to read the water, how to present. i still have caught most of my fish on dries - except for pike. i also got very good at untangling my line, hooks, etc. i found the more casting practice i had - even in the park with a piece of yarn, my casting got much better, i had fewer tangles and was able to place my yarn where i wanted to. then came distance. i'm still working on my double haul. patience, all in good time. find a few good people here to fish with, read the advice and practice, practice and at some point it will stop being practice and become catching fish on a consistent basis. have fun, there are a lot of very knowledgeable people here willing to offer advice. listen well, it has helped me a lot.
  20. i'd say either a large red squirel or a small cotton tail rabbit, but i'd have to feel ur fur to know for sure
  21. AND so camping season begins... no more yahoos out in waiparious
  22. i just noticed them the other day. at the time i thought the RB looked a bit like running sockeye but then i noticed the browns, which definately look like browns and figured the other side was RB. very pretty. and really shows off the fishing community and how important the fish and the bow are to the city
  23. try using the photo alteration program that came with your digital camera or photo shop and decrease the size of the photo. i have a resize function that lets me use either by pixel, bites or inches. i just call them mini pictures and stick them in a separate photo file
  24. great story AL. ouch. that is sooooo wrong. i can just picture you with this pin with feathers sticking out of your face. but at least you had 6 weeks off and got to go fishing, even if you missed the fish and here i was going to mention that i had hooked my ear due to the wind earlier this year. not much of a story after that, even if it was a 2/0 pike streamer
  25. lol. i have read a number of those. they are very good and a wonderful inspiration for my contribution to the uk swap. although i have bastardized the poor thing, my prototype looks like a racoon at the moment. but then again. i was missing the green hackle i needed. - problem resolved. i bought more stuff. oops.
