  1. true, but you do need a work visa if you plan on staying there for a bit and want to earn some cash on the crappy days you aren't fishing. unless of course you have wealthy parents or hold up a bank on your way to the airport. Canada has an agreement with many countries who do not require a 'travel' visa in order to visit for less than 90 days but they wont let you work. i agree with rusty and wongrs. an exchange program would be a good way to continue your education and travel.
  2. purple. if you pull the wings of a fly, do you call it a walk?
  3. oh what the hell. do share, i havent heard it
  4. OMG. that was too funny. i'm crying here. definately NOT deep enough. damn it all anyway. and lonefisher, you're right. don't think the pike would want him either.
  5. i feel shame yes i did. i bet gene simmons could do it. couldn't "I'm" be considered a complete sentance also..? you wouldnt say it because it sounds silly but it still has the noun and verb. or do contractions count?
  6. i have a couple of red floss ones, a red wire wrap one is heavy the other is really light - not sure but i think it is a plastic wrapping, it doesnt sink and i have a few brownish pink cheinelle (sp?). in my newly accquired tying glass bead flies, there are a few worm patterns tied with beads, dont know how productive they are. but they look pretty
  7. not a clue, but looks easy enough to replicate
  8. ah, i get the corilation. yikes on the bear encounter.
  9. ex-travel agent here. i was lucky, finished school and then went to work - pay sucked but got to travel a lot. i'm in the 'do what your heart desires' group. i'm in the middle of seriously considering selling the house, quitting the job, finding a place to buy where i can live mortgage free and work at some where like tim hortons or walmart - mindless work and then travelling for a few months a year and working as i travel. anyway, back to the fishing/travelling thing. although nz may not be that original, i do have a friend who is a travel agent and is from nz, with a number of friends down there. she may be able to point you in that direction. she has also said the fishing there is amazing. other ideas, carribean (ocean fly fishing the shallows), pategonia, europe. try for work permits/visas so you can work while you are away. research fly fishing destination magazines and see if you can find a speciality travel agency. might ask at whatever local fishing store you frequent. i do have a canadian travel industry guide for info - but the link is at work. if you want me to do any leg work for you, pm me. the benefit of travelling while you are under the age of 30 is that most countries will grant working travel visas without much hassle, such as having enough money in your bank account to survive on while you are in that country for 6 months. i have known people who had to prove they had at least 50K in the bank before a just an entry visa was granted never mind the work visa, which is usually more difficult to get.
  10. i was hoping he used my ex...
  11. sweet, gotta love it. i have fond yet not so fond memories of catching crab in the juan de fuca. many hours of listening to my dad and brother swearing at traps, bait, each other, crabs, the weather and so on. i guess we weren't so nice as to use the pilers, at least from what i remember, there was usually either a hammer or just shear brute strength used to rip the claw off. and a lot of 'i'm not putting my hand in there this time, you do it...' thanks for the memories. good times, good times. brought a smile to my face.
  12. sorry to derail the hijacked thread but... for those of us who don't know the story, why is there a grizzly bear licking that man's face and not chewing it off? there has to be some reason because i don't know anyone crazy enough to cuddle with a grizzly bear and lived to tell about it. and i know A LOT of crazy people is this one just young or trained??? man or bear - which ever
  13. there must be a number of people who just come on to the forum to read the info but are uncomfortable posting or think they don't have anything important to add. is there anyway of doing a poll for members with 0 posts or the arduous job of sending out messages/emails asking for a usage response. i am a member of the fish alberta forum but i have never posted as i really didnt find the people very approachable to pose questions to and also any posts not related to or in relation to a sponsored/approved topic/company/advertising etc always gets deleted. but i still pop on from time to time to read the updates, notices and see what a few people have been up to.
  14. actually, if you simplify the fishermen and have dark grey, silver and black, it might not be that difficult. that would be awesome as a logo
  15. thanks all, i didn't find it in portland but i did manage to find it right where i left it at the beading store. paid 2x more than i should have but no body else had it and i really wanted a copy. early birthday present to me.
  16. rob, i have my tag for mule deer for this season. i also have a friend who is a taxidermist and a few other friends with tags. we aren't going until mid-october. but i will let you know if i fill my tag and i can get the hide tanned/dried sufficiently. i will also check my 'stash' of deer hair - chances are, somewhere in my giant box o'crap and miscellanious hair/supplies, i have mule deer hair. not sure from what body part. i will try to find straight stuff. how much exactly would you like??? and is there anything else you need?
  17. beautiful, absolutly beautiful. my sides hurt.
  18. portland you say... i'm going to portland tomorrow. if i can't find it there, i have a few friends at wholesale and russell's, i'll see if they have it. nice to know a few people have the book. no, i'm not sure what i am looking for exactly. something interesting and unique for the fly swap but also useful. it's nice to have pretty, better to have useful. there is an excellent rock and gem store here in north vancouver, so ultimately i would like to have the book before i head back to calgary because they have an amazing selection. i'll let everyone know. thanks again
  19. COOL!!! thanks for sharing
  20. damn someone stole my ice fishing idea... calgary traffic is not that bad... i have never been to this event before, nice to hear it isnt downtown. although i live on the exact opposite side of the city. i could almost use a hotel night for the journey. lol
  21. yes it is for the fly swap, i saw this book over a year ago at a bead specialty store of all places, hindsight is 20/20, i didn't get it at the time... i have looked all over vancouver for it to no avail. even the library didn't have it and the only copy in bc is in the okanagan library system. i will try calgary when i get back. i did find it on amazon, but would rather get it locally. if anyone has a copy or wouldn't mind letting me borrow it, i would be greatly appreciative.
  22. um dutch... i assume you know there are bait bans in most of the rivers?!? my regs are in the truck and i don't feel like looking for them, but i know for sure there is a bait ban including worms in the carbondale. it is also catch and release only from sept 1 to oct 31. besides, fishing with critters is not fly fishing, you might as well bring a spinning rod, a 6 pack and just chuck hardware into a stocked lake with your critters. sorry for being a little bitchy about this but really, the rules are there for a reason, it is spawning time for the bulls and browns. although they have been stressed because of the heat. the rivers in the south have not had a lot of pressure in the last bit because of the fire ban and area closure. but please respect our rules as we have to, leave your worms and check the regs on usage of maggots on certain rivers and at certain times of the year. using means to catch fish that are specifically prohibited by the regs is just as bad as poaching, even if you throw them back. i do hope you manage to not have to cancel your trip out here, kick ur boss in the butt and tell him he's crazy.
  23. this fly works wonderfully for cutthroat. i tie a bunch of these a year specifically for the carbondale. worked on the castle and livingstone also. tail - dark tiped deer hair body - peacock herl wing - white calf's tail brown hen hackle hook 14 or 16 dry try the gorge at the corner of the adanak road and the carbondale river. lots of bulls down deep
  24. my incident was on the carbondale river, downstream of the adanak road and carbondale road junction and upstream of the shell rig. (the forestry road that is the back road in to hillcrest/side something or other? and blairmore, south of hwy 3, west of 507) i usually have my camera with me, good idea, i'll take pics next time. as for insurance... that's what i do no car, but the adjustors a few rows over, most shrug, they don't care as long as the premium is paid, it is up to the underwriters, and most of them don't care either.
