I got em at Wholesale too. The razor slit looks sleeker, but i wonder if losing the silver tinsel on the bottom would make a difference? Can't find it now, but a pic I saw of one swimming really did look like it had a silver shine on the bottom. I guess I could always cut and glue to attach some.

They'll still float - these were meant to be used during a backswimmer fall, but could also be used with a sinking or sink tip line.

Got caught without any backswimmer patterns during mating season last fall, so I decided to tie up a few foam ones. Got the idea from http://www.westernsportfishing.ca/flyofmonth.htm but I didn't find any sheet foam in the color I needed; Fortunately I found some pre shaped bodies that were exactly what I needed. Since it was preshaped foam, I found the easiest way to get it on the hook was zap a gap. The underbody is holographic silver tinsel, and the entire thing is coated in shiny head cement (Hard as Nails) to give it a nice shine. The foam would also be handy if you need to use markers to imitate the natural while out on the water. These are size 10, but there are smaller sizes of foam available.

Probably the attitude that every new fisherman learns from those who teach them; it gets passed down that whities are too easy to catch or suckers are dirty fish, and nnwe're also inundated with magazines and films about the cool fish, but I've never seen a whitie make the cover of a magazine.

I'd advise against soaking the reel - the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel and aluminum components rely on oxygen being available from air so that they can form an oxide layer which is a barrier against the chloride in seawater. Rinse everything thoroughly in clean water, and then make sure to dry it.

The rod isn't going to load for a normal cast when you've only got a short amount of line out (also depends on what rod you were using; this will be more of a problem with heavier rods), but you still have a couple choices. If you're nymphing and within a rod length or two you can use the water tension of the line when it's dangling downstream of you to flip your nymphs upstream and high stick or czech nymph (check google or ask Max for a lesson) through the drift (this can also be done with streamers). Another technique with streamers is to fish upstream of your target while swinging into the lie you want to fish, and slowly take steps downstream to cover the entire area. Both the scandi and skagit lines are shooting heads, just designed for two different styles of fishing, so you will have to strip both in in order to recast them.

Did you watch the Silva/Luchida fight before that? More one sided, and he ended it in the first round with a nice punch. I was hoping for a bit more entertainment like in the Jones/Bonnar fight before that.

Was a fairly quiet night tonight. The casting pond is bigger this year so that 3 or 4 overhead casters can try out rods at the same time. The old one is off to the side but there's little room for backcasts and the ceiling is too low for spey rods. The setup is a bit better with the theaters on opposite sides, but the mic on the tying one wasn't working.

IIRC, there's also a cash machine on site.

Doug did exactly that with his Temple Fork 8 wt and had it out yesterday, talk to him about it. You may want to go with a heavier line though.

There's a Simms patch kit available at most places if you want to reinforce them - it comes with a small tube of Aquaseal, which can also be used on its own. I haven't seen anything that could be sprayed on.

The streams are closed for safety reasons (no ice fishing through moving waters), so opening them, as Max pointed out, wouldn't make sense.
