  1. http://www.al-azhar.ab.ca/shrine_centre.htm Right beside the Bow in NW Calgary, in case the wedding gets boring, or you need an escape route. There`s also a few ethnic clubs around (Polish Canadian, German Canadian) if you`re looking for somewhere smaller. Or if you need it to be really cheap, hold it in Balzac.
  2. Monday and Tuesday would probably see the least amount of traffic on the rivers, but most people would come out on a Friday night anyways, if only to set up and have a few beers.
  3. http://gateway.cd.gov.ab.ca/groupuse.aspx#officelistings Scroll down or search for syncline on that page. How about a get together that starts on the weekdays and ends on the weekend or vice versa?
  4. I'd be in for a non-long weekend, but as weedy pointed out they're already taking reservations at some sites, and I'm sure alot of the popular weekends are booked already.
  5. Cool pics, would like to see some full size ones when you get back.
  6. IIRC, there is a large group camp setup in there, mostly a gravel parking lot on the east side of Hwy 24 but some treed areas, used to go in there back in the 80's when the parents were with an amateur radio club. There was a group shelter, horseshoe pits, ball diamond, etc. http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=50....p;z=17&om=1 They also take reservations for the site: http://www.wyndhamcarselandpark.com/faqs.htm
  7. Just a thought... the fish appears to be more upright in the drawing than the photo, perhaps the top fins should be drawn on?
  8. How about some real Alberta challenges then! -Most fish caught and landed while holding a Tim's in one hand -Successfully fishing the city portion of the Elbow on a hot long weekend. Bonus points for bikinis. -200 yard pontoon boat rescue dash -Nailing a poacher with a jar of eggs from 30 yards -grand theft auto using a flyrod If flyfishing was all about casting, would we still do it?
  9. I just went with the Pflueger President. Much cheaper than most other models I looked at, but still a decent reel with some weight behind it to balance the rod.
  10. Call them first, I only saw the one copy on display, but they may have more in the back.
  11. When I started a few months back I checked with Dave at Fishtales, and he sold me one of the kits they put together for their courses in the fall and winter. Alot of stuff in it, but the packages were cut down to keep the price to $75, i think. Just needed to buy a vise and a couple tools on top of that. There's also a book by Peter Gathercole called the The Fly Tying Bible (check Chapters for it, picked it up at Sunridge) that has some beginner's steps and a ton of patterns to get you started.
  12. I picked up a copy at Country Pleasures, 29.95.
  13. 1 - Haystacks (coconut and chocolate, homer like!), pecan pie, and of course the turkey and stuffing. 2 - See 3. 3 - You should already be too drunk to do #2. 4 - An 8 weight bull trout/pike setup would be nice.
  14. It'll be cool once they come out with bright yellow spey rods.
  15. Does the same thing happen when you try a wired connection?
  16. Going down the river, you can see what are probably drift boats - they don't look natural. But I want a resolution so I can see what type of hopper they're using.
  17. The whole privacy thing is what's causing the latest google tool, the virtual tour, to have problems coming to canada since it can capture faces, guys relieving themselves on the side of an LA freeway, etc. I don't think you'll find too many drift boats in Calgary, though, as the shots were taken in winter. There is a checkbox to get the exact date. I use GE with my GPS software to get a good route planned - sometimes you can see that what the GPS thinks is a route ain't exactly so. For some reason alot of printed maps and GE think that there's a bridge where McKinnon Flats is....
  18. Your left hand is used to add more power, but you won't be lifting it over your head (unless you want to). It's mainly used to push and pull the lower handle around like a lever. If you grab a broomstick and try a few spey motions (such as a double handed roll cast), you'll probably get a better idea. Its definitely been easier on my joints than single handed casting.
  19. A bow river bugger is always a good choice, but you'll have plenty of variety with those.
  20. Weekends you'll be fine, but if it's a weekday avoid coming during rush hour.
  21. I have a Canon Powershot S2 - I think the current model is the S5, and it has some nice features, and a review on the site mentioned by Reg. If you're doing super macro shots, the camera can focus at zero distance from the lens. I also use an Olympus c7070 for work, and it has the same type of feature set, but I find the controls on the Canon to be more intuitive and easier to change. Both of these are a step below the digital SLR models. I know the Canon can have additional filters and lenses mounted.
  22. 1 gram = 15.4323584 grains You won't need to factor in the sink rate, as its based on density, not grain weight alone.
