  2. Shawshank, The Matrix (first one), Tombstone - Val Kilmer's portrayal of Doc Holliday - although maybe not historically accurate - has to be one of the best of all time!, The Dark Knight, Inception, The Usual Suspects, Back to the Future Trilogy, anything Star Wars or Star Trek.. most of the superhero movies..

  4. Sounds cool. Any idea why your signature is 5 miles of blank space?
  5. An old prospector shuffled into town leading an old tired mule. The old man headed straight for the only saloon to clear his parched throat. He walked up and tied his old mule to the hitch rail. As he stood there, brushing some of the dust from his face and clothes, a young gunslinger stepped out of the saloon with a gun in one hand and a bottle of whiskey in the other. The young gunslinger looked at the old man and laughed, saying, "Hey old man, have you ever danced?" The old man looked up at the gunslinger and said, "No, I never did dance... never really wanted to." A crowd had gathered as the gunslinger grinned and said, "Well, you old fool, you're gonna dance now," and started shooting at the old man's feet. The old prospector --not wanting to get a toe blown off-- started hopping around like a flea on a hot skillet. Everybody was laughing, fit to bust. When his last bullet had been fired, the young gunslinger, still laughing, holstered his gun and turned around to go back into the saloon. The old man turned to his pack mule, pulled out a double-barreled shotgun, and cocked both hammers. The loud clicks carried clearly through the desert air. The crowd stopped laughing immediately. The young gunslinger heard the sounds too, and he turned around very slowly. The silence was almost deafening. The crowd watched as the young gunman stared at the old timer and the large gaping holes of those twin barrels. The barrels of the shotgun never wavered in the old man's hands, as he quietly said, "Son, have you ever licked a mule's ass?" The gunslinger swallowed hard and said, "No sir..... but... I've always wanted to." There are a few lessons for us all here: Never be arrogant. Don't waste ammunition. Whiskey makes you think you're smarter than you are. Always, always make sure you know who has the power. Don't mess with old men; they didn't get old by being stupid.
  6. Why do so many people NOT use their signal lights?
  7. A blind man walks into a store with his seeing eye dog. All of a sudden, he picks up the leash and begins swinging the dog over his head! The manager runs up to the man and asks, "What are you doing?!!" The blind man replies, "Just looking around."
  8. I'm in the same boat as you and have done a bunch of research over the last few weeks. I've pretty much decided on the Seagull S6 Original. Lots of people say it's the best guitar you can buy for <$500, and that it's comparable to some guitars that are worth $1000-2000. The big selling point for me is it has a wider than average neck, which makes it easier with my big acromegaly hands. Another one I read about was a Takamine.. I believe it was the G Series. Haven't been able to see one in person yet though. Similar to fly rods.. it's always a good idea to sit down and try different guitars out. It's hard to know what feels right when you don't play yet, but surprisingly, you can still tell some differences. As far as sound goes, you can always ask someone there to play it for you.. Or better yet, if you have a friend that plays, make sure you take them with you when you go shopping. Uber.. believe it or not, that's the second time today I heard the pawn shop suggestion! It never even crossed my mind before.. great idea.
  9. That was new to me as well! Makes perfect sense though.. As others have mentioned, I think tires play the 2nd biggest role in these accidents (next to people not slowing down). I know I've said it before, but it amazes me when walking along sidewalks, or in parking lots, how many vehicles have BALD tires. Back in Nova Scotia, it was pretty much impossible for this to happen because you need to have your vehicle safety inspected every single year (at least you did before I left in '99). Bald tires would cause the vehicle to fail the inspection. I suppose the only way around it would be to have a buddy that does inspections and give him a case of beer or something.. I could be mistaken, but it seems to me they don't take vehicle safety inspections as seriously here.. get it done once, and you're good. About the only time you need to have it done outside of that, is if you're buying a car that's >12 years old.. some insurance companies require a safety inspection before they'll insure it. Proper tires make a night and day difference in this weather! Winter Tires > Winter rated All-Seasons > All-Seasons (3 seasons) > bald tires.
  10. I found it amusing how they said that they thought it might be lightning or high altitude hail "because the birds had signs of trauma". I'm no expert.. but I figure falling from hundreds of feet in the sky and hitting the ground can probably cause some trauma too...
  11. McDonalds coffee cup lids! They leak like a sieve. I like McDonald's coffee better than Timmy's or Fivebucks, but their lids suck. Of course, you always have the possibility that the person at Timmy's will put the lid on with the mouth hole right on top of the seam of the cup.. then it will leak too..
  12. Hey everyone, I've recently decided to have another go at learning guitar. The first time I tried was when I was 11-12 years old, and I ended up quitting after ~1.5 years because I was too into dirtbikes & snowmobiling! I didn't practice enough and cancelled way too many lessons. Now that I'm older, I always kick myself for not sticking with it. Just wondering if anyone on here plays guitar? And if so, can you recommend some good free online lessons? I'm looking on YouTube, but because it's been so long, I'm not sure what exactly to look for. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
  13. Not that great for me.. didn't get out enough. Caught a few nice ones though.. no monsters this year.
  14. Most of mine are driving related.. not using signal lights, stopping in merge lanes, purposely speeding up when you're trying to switch lanes, cruising in the far left lane while going below the speed limit, etc. And then to top it all off, those people who do any of the aforementioned things and then give YOU the finger if you honk at them, as if you're in the wrong. Love that. Had a 'funny' one this summer coming home from work. I was taking the 33rd Ave. west exit off of Crowchild Trail north (beside Marda Loop). If anyone is familiar with that turn, it's a single turn only lane, but there's a second lane for Calgary Transit to stop at the bus stop there, and then continue across 33rd and back onto Crowchild. It gets pretty backed up during rush hour and you usually have to wait for 2-3 red lights before you make it through. Every once in awhile there's someone who feels that they're more important than everyone else and gets in that CT lane and treats it as a dual turn. Not cool. So this dude decides to do that, so I take my turn and then flip on my right signal light and slowly move over into the left lane purposely pushing him over so he either had to hit the brakes or hit the sidewalk. Then I shrug my shoulders and gestured to him in my mirror like "WHAT are you doing?" The light on the other side of the overpass is red, so sure enough, buddy jumps out of his vehicle. I wind my window down and he gets right in my face and starts letting the expletives fly. We're talking seriously ballistic here.. I think he thought that if he pulled the "i'm so crazy i'll kill you" routine that I'd back off, but yeah, that trick doesn't work on me. I quickly put my face right back in his (you should have seen him flinch, it was hilarious), just about touching noses, and calmly but firmly asked him why he felt his time was more important that everyone else's. He then threw a bunch more expletives and said "it's a dual turn lane!" to which I replied, "No, it's not a dual turn lane, go back and look at the sign again.." He dropped a bunch more expletives and then challenged me to a fight because I was such a bleeping idiot. I was like "right, let's get out and fight on the side of the road because you don't know how to read traffic signs." I laughed.. which made him even more angry. Meanwhile the light had turned green so I started driving away and he scrambles back to his vehicle because he was blocking traffic and people who saw the whole thing were honking and yelling at him... You could totally tell that as we argued, he was realizing that I was right, but he wasn't going to back down at that point. Afterwards I thought.. "right buddy, all ~30 of us that lined up in the left lane are complete idiots, and you're the only smart guy who realizes it's dual turn!" Which is another pet peeve of mine.. thinking of good comeback lines AFTER the fact. OH.. another one is when people use merge lanes to pass a line of traffic on the right, and then get back in again. A good example of this is also on Crowchild Trail.. this time going south towards the Glenmore exit. There's a really long merge lane for people coming off of 50 Ave onto Crowchild, that basically goes all the way to the Glenmore exit. There's also a bus stop at the end of that one.. some mornings it gets really backed up and people that are already on Crowchild will pull into that merge lane, speed past the line of cars, and then try and force there way back in up at the front. So disrespectful. Depending on my mood, I'll sometimes drive in the middle of the two lanes and block them off (unless I see a bus coming, then I'll move out of the way). The few people behind me almost always realize what I'm doing and they won't let the person in other. Love it.
  15. I wonder how deep you can go with one of these? I tried Googling it but not for too long.. in the videos they are barely even going under the surface. Cool idea though! Gotta love biomimetics.
  16. Woke up my wife and 3 year old son last night to watch it. Sky was pretty clear, but a bunch of clouds rolled in just as it was getting to total eclipse. Still got to see it pretty good though!
  17. Sometimes I forget that half my family are/were insurance salesman/agents.. Just talked to my cousin and she basically said "it sounds like you may have gotten someone who was fairly new and just didn't explain things to you properly." She said that since we have the guilty party's information and the police charged them, that our insurance company should have said "open up a claim with their insurance company, and if they give you any grief, then let us know and we'll back you up." I asked her if it was too late now since we already opened a claim with our company and she said no, that we can still go to his company. So we need to call his insurance company and say that we'd like to open a claim, your client so & so hit my wife at this date & time.. here is the police report, here is where he was charged, etc. etc. etc. "Where do you recommend we take our vehicle to get fixed?" Or, if we know a good place, just tell them "this is where we're taking it" and they should foot the bill 100%. If they argue, then that's when I can call my insurance company back and let them fight the battle for us. The "one year" thing is basically that IF we decide to pay our deductible (she agrees that we should not have to since it was not my wife's fault), that the statute of limitations says that it can take UP TO one year for us to get that money back. But she said it rarely, if ever, takes that long.
