Awesome story Gary. In truth, my friends usually say I do everything wrong and I hear "that will never work" a lot. Good thing I never learned to read. The guy with the button does exist...he is still trying to learn me after a couple of decades of frustration

I fish with a guy who has a "no autographs please" button on his vest...He is the pro. I am just passing on what he teaches me. We hardly ever catch any fish, but we always do things exactly like they teach in the official fly fishing book.

That is not proper streamer fishing technique Mr. Troutlover and therefore all those fish you catch in that manner do not count. Streamers with black marabou tails seem to work at the end of sink tips or full sinking lines in the winter. Cold water slows trout metabolism down so they don't have to eat as often and tend to be more sluggish in winter. That just means you need to get your fly more in their face (that's why that Troutlover guy serves up his clouser at them under an indicator). If you swing flies through the right type of water at the right depth/speed you can still get quite a few in the winter

Traditional Merry Christmas!

Have a great Christmas all. Enjoy your family and be grateful for all the blessings in this life. -
Counting 1.5x water depth is usually a very good rule of thumb. The theory is that fish can't see the fluro, so why not use as heavy of material as you can get away with. I've used 10lb Berkley transition for years. I feel it is the fly more than the leader that matters...especially at depths past about 13ft

Awesome fish. Caddis larva in your pic. How long was the hike in?

Can't believe you would want to leave ice and cold to go do THAT. Great fish, hope you get some more monsters!

Nope, it's fly tying season now. How was your week? You have a cow tag still?
-
Wow, what a blistering cold morning. Ground blizzard and -26C. Finally blew the clouds away but the cold remained. Only does in the boy's scope today, He'll have to wait for next year. Snow wave coming over the edge

Found someone's secret hideout. Never left his bed by the logs. It's my son's turn tomorrow. Hope we don't freeze

Sounds like an awesome day. I have been enjoying great days with my 15 year old son this year. Such a great excuse to spend time together. Enjoy your last week. I might even think about pulling the trigger

Bull before legal light this morning, crap. Turned down a few deer. Always fun to go for a walk in the woods

Not For Young Eyes... Progressives Or Bi-Focals
monger replied to jgib01's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
I've used progressives for both fishing and shooting for a number of years. No issues for me. I guess it depends on your eyes. I'm not interested in multiple sets of glasses. Better quality lenses have larger areas of magnification so you don't have to move your head around as much -

Born in Cowtown, spent my '70s summers split between the Highwood and the Bow a few miles above Caresland. We'd make a few trips up to the Oldman/Dutch Cr in the summer for a big Cutty fish fry on the coleman. My Dad taught us kids to swing 3 wet flies across the water to the hungry trout and it was awesome. The caddis hatches used to be so thick below Legacy Island we would wear hoodies to try and keep the critters from crawling in your ears and in your shirt. There would be pods of fish rising every night from 7pm to pitch black and quite often we would get 2 fish at a time. Looking back now I wish we knew about fishing dries ( not to catch more, just to enjoy the eats). Today I love hunting big fish in skinny water with dry flies. Started fishing lakes to find fatter fish and less angler density. Lots to learn in regards to new bugs and techniques. I still have the bamboo rod my Dad got as a teenager in Longview....the one I got my first Highwood fish with. Need to get it wet again soon. When I'm not fishing I'm playing with rodents, fish and amphibians at a big school. Cuttcrazy...did you grow up in Fairview? -
Great fish Jeff. Gotta luv colorful Cutts

Incredible extrapolations made in this video. It is a wonder that places in Europe still exist considering the lack of wolves. By now countries should have fallen into a black hole. Good to have some wolves...good to have a population that is not out of control

Apparently big kids like fishing too. Who knew you could get addicted in one afternoon. Fish gobbling dries apparently is exciting

Good show Gary. Must have been a great fight!
