  1. I do it but more with flies in the film (emerging caddis, midge emergers, cripples of all kinds, etc) and I usually tag those behind a regular #18 or 20 fly I am using to match the hatch. I dont do it much with bigger flies as I find I tangle a LOT with 2 dries unless I put the smaller one on first. If I put small one on second (trailing a larger fly) I am always tangled.
  2. Just make sure it can carry a couple quads. Might as well go "all in"...
  3. I was thiking that myself.. lol.. if it is, it's good to see the size improving.. I have a sneaking suspicion it's a little further south , though.
  4. Maybe some of the guys with old cans could arrange a time to fire them off, with a few more of the FFC members present... then more people would gain a knowledge of what actually happens instead of information gained from only reading and never seeing. I have fired off old bear spray cans a few times, both times with the same results.. a good coverage area of about 15ft maybe 20ft... the thing to realize is when your getting charged by a bear, can you hold off till he's under 20ft away? calm under pressure? you bet... but I'll gaurantee if he gets to that close and you spray him he's gonna run right over you so be ready for that too... lol.... if he doesnt get within 20ft he's bluff charging, which has happened to me more than once out there.
  5. yeah I looked at the flows down there almost every stream came up about 400% or more ... yikes..
  6. as a parent and one who has had these types of things happen (though with happy endings) it's almost impossible to watch each kid (if you have more than one especially) for 24 hours a day 7 days a week. They can and WILL do really stupid stuff...often the minute you look away or answer the phone, or cook supper, or do something else that requires a bit of your attention span.... simply becuase they don't know any better. Do I blame the parents here? Heck no. Glad they found the kid.... and I do hope they got his truck back becuase as a parent I'd be putting that in a keepsakes box to give to the kid when he's older and understands more what happened.
  7. well... I thinnk I am gonna change my forum name to "stormcaller" becuase whenever I am near the Bow it friggin pours and hails and lightning strikes everywhere and she's blown out for a day. I apologize to ALL the rest of you all for the conditions. it's all my fault.
  8. sheep, highwood, oldman, crow, castle. they all have bulls. Knowing where to look and how to fish them, well if your from texas... you'll know how to extract a fish from cover as I assume you fish bass... so do the same but now in flowing water. big poppers, bass style streamers, saltwater stuff, will work. Look for dark caves/ledges in the river rock edges or bottom. Good luck.
  9. A long 3 as the boys said. I have the almost same setup russ likes (a 10 foot 6wt , and a 3wt) only my 3 is a bit short. dont get me wrong I love it, but it's only good short range (30ft or less) which is fine for most places I use it but it wouldnt really do for lakes at all. cheers.
  10. I should be specific in saying - for DRY FLY presentations..
  11. in my humble opinion, overlining a rod isnt very good for presentation (say , for example, a 4wt line on my 3wt, that would be the end of a quiet and supple fly presentation).
  12. excellent pics, loved 'em!
  13. well, most places I catch bulls at require the rod tip to be used for the presentation ( popping flies through little caves along shore or dark spots, rapids, plunge pools). The "cast" is pretty much eliminated from my bully fishing, really. So when one strikes I am already "jigging" with the rod tip... and the hookset needs to be quick and hard. I do strip strike where possible when fishing a large pool deep or something, but, but usually most fish are taken at the point where I am using the rod tip for fly motion, which makes it next to impossible. Hard to explain really, but imagine my rod straight out from me, and my fly nearly at my feet, working back up a current... that's where I get hit.. most of the time. I dont fish the middle of the river for bulls, nor do I make a cast longer than about 10ft.
  14. I dont want to sound like a dick, but honestly, if your ONLY targeting bull trout get an 8 or bigger. your going to be casting big stuff up to 10 inches long (yes tie em that big) in the wind, plus... I've lost 2 bulls in AB that were well over 40 inches (i think it may have been the same fish) becuase an 8WT didnt get a hard enough hookset to bury a fly into the bony mouth and then keep enough pressure on the fish to make it stay there. When that fish of a lifetime hits ya, be prepared! having said that, a good stiff 6wt would handle most alberta bulls, if this stick is going to be for bulls and other trout too.
  15. Yeah they were fighting VERY well! gotta love the crow
  16. Those cutts are really dang nice. Almost looks like ya been spending some time in BC. If not those are really good for AB
  17. I should be bitching right now about the fact that Ive made plans this weekend with two members of the board and both of 'em bailed on me without giving me really any warning (notice its 4am)... one went fishing with someone else..., folks if your so spoiled by the bow being right there... that's fine but when someone gets a chance once a month if that to fish it and ya make plans maybe show some balls and show up. end of rant. going fishing.
  18. Great shots. I might of been on the crow same day but didnt see you guys. Dry fly fishing was epic for the last week... but looks like ya did alright with the nymphs too.
  19. for food: if the service sucks, it's taking too long, our waiter has been paying no attention to our table, etc... I'll just get the heck up and leave, even if we've ordered. I wont pay or tip for crap service (if there's no excuse). if it's a friday night or valentines and every tom dick and harry's at the restuarant and it loks like theres only one waiter I'll go the other way with it and be encouraging and tip well, if he/she is working their azz off. I'm the same way with fishing gear... I dont do it a lot online but every time someone asks for opinions about stuff I own that I like I'll back it up. Islander, TFO, and St Croix are the best cheers.
