Taco, About 5yrs back I did that in scotch creek, bc (of the shuswap lakes) . It was a sockeye run, and I'd throw an egg pattern towards some salmon, let it slide behind 'em, and slam the unseen rainbows. Some real hawgs too, never knew how big some of those 'bows in shuswap get, but wow Accidentally got one sockeye too, my duaghter thought it was a monster and never went anywhere near water for a least the rest of that trip

They didn't mention it was a big rig with it's horn blaring that scared him off, eh? **evil grin** Cool story!

As far as the fish, I've always witnessed what I would consider to be a VERY healthy population of trout in the Crowsnest, especially for the size of river it is. The big trout are smart enough and fished enough, to not get caught very much by those who do NOT know what there doing. This is a good thing. If they were all dumb, I would be concerned about the river.

I have had most of my best Bow river days, when I have to climb down an 8 foot ice cliff to get to the water There's something surreal about fishing what looks like the bloody north pole, on the Bow.... I too really enjoy the winter fishing on the Crow! Midges can produce some decent dry fly action too, even in January. Depends how warm the day gets Never really got into ice fishing much. Been about 10 times total. matter of fact, tried to sell my hand auger this year in garage sale. No one wanted it.

I think that using a net (the good mesh net) and keeping the fish IN THE WATER while it's in the net getting unhooked, etc, is the least stressfull means of unhooking fish. Just get yourself a much bigger net.... Some advocate release of fish wihout nets, and I believe this is true up to a point with smaller, and even larger fish, that your not planning to photograph and don't care if they do end up getting off at your feet. Any fish that you actually want a picture of, however, should be rested in the water, ina net until the camera is ready to go. Only then should the fish be lifted out, and only for about 5 seconds to snap the shot. I've seen lots of guys wihout nets beat the shiznit out of fish trying to get pictures. Lots and lots.

You can also fish for mullets where I deliver my loads in Arkansas. You need to tie on a #4-0 pack of Marlboro's, and present them in the Nascar feeding lanes... if that fails, try a #0-6 Can of Skoal. Sure fire catchin, but some consider that as lowly as baitin 'em Ben, I'm fine. Nice to see you on these forums ;-)

Your pretty much looking at nymphing, and the crow's usually fantastic this time of year. Go slam em! I use 6x - #10 wire JSW, #18 bead head midge pupae, #20 hare's ear, and have super success in the 4 foot pools.

I have to 100% agree on the HONEST fish over 24". Go look around and have a CLOSE look at some guides web pages out there.... if you know your fish sizes pretty well, you'll see what I mean. And these are GUIDES overestimating fish by 3-5 inches. In 15 years of Bow river fishing I'd say I come by an honest 24+ incher about one in every 5 trips out. And that's knowing where to find 'em. There's fish over 30" in the bow if you can fool 'em. Heck with 24

Well I'd say you should say who it is. A Private guide probably doesn't have the money to hire a lawyer in the first place, and unless he's sick or dead, he should be answering your phone calls and e-mails. And not all private guides are bad. I ran a private services for 7 years that *by word of mouth* grew exponentially. So if you do it right, you won't suffer for business... but if you do it wrong, maybe you should get a slam here and there.... just my 2 cents.

Great write up there MTB ... I highlighted the things I used for that 25 inch 'bow last week. Hey MTB... me and tool are delayed on the steelie trip till after thanksgiving any chance of you going then?

The important thing to do when there's a ton of risers and your casting in the general direction of a fish is (ya it's gonna sound silly) to use the force. Let go of your feelings....... lol. Seriously, when you get the thought that one has taken your fly, set. When you hear something where u casted, set. When you see one rise anywhere near where your fly MIGHT be, set. Once u get the hang of it, night fishing = a whole new and fun world.
