I have been using an allen reel on my spey rod. Two years now. Still like it a lot. Check out the website, salt water rated and in the price range.

I also started on a 5/6 - 12 1/2 foot spey a few years ago ( mine is a Deer Creek) . fishtales were my go to guys. Got the line demo kit from them, and found what weight would working for me. However, I found that as I got better, I was throwing lighter lines - started with a 480 grn airflow skagit. then went to a 420. still a little heavy, but I now use the rod mostly for bigger streamers on the bow. Also found that skagit lines were much easier for me to learn on. Agree with the overwhelm thing. Lessons made all the difference. Lots of good spey guys on the board.

last may I replaced my pentax wg2 with the olympus tg2. I have been very happy with my choice. good underwater shots - much brighter than the old one. But the feature I value the most is the on speed - press the button and the camera is rtg, no wait, no hesitation, first pic almost simultaneous with the turn on. Second great thing is the video - press the easy to find button on the back and you are taking a vid. - no fumbling with dials or worse menu's. The frequent used stuff - flash control, timer, iso, white balance, is on screen and easily usuable and intuitive. two things that are not great - only 4x, and the panoramic scene seaming process is slow. I spent quite some time researching this and after 9 months of use, I would make the same choice. Definitely not the cheapest, but the value is there for me.

not a plumber, but did a couple cabins. capillary action will draw the solder up into the joint - against gravity. But you need to have the parts clean, fluxed AND you must heat the joint itself. you can tell when the joint is hot enough, cuz the solder melts when pressed against the joint - and the flame is not pointed there.

I concur with the demo kits with the caveat that you have to be able to use the spey rod first. If you are totally new at it, trying out a bunch of lines wont help. generally for the novice, heavier lines are easier to cast, but and it is a BIG but, first few times in your hand will only get you frustrated. There are a bunch of good spey instructors around (Max, Toolman and Dutchie come to mind immediately but there are many others.) I would suggest you arrange with one of them, or someone from the shop to give the demo's a try. On my deer creek / with a grain window of 350 to 55, I am using a 400 skagit and I use it for streamers. On my 3/4 amundson I am using a 250 gr snowbee switch line, and use it for nymphing. the amundson doesnt like the big streamers, and the dc has mending issues with the thick 400 line. I just bought the Olympus TG2. And just love it. The picture quality is amazing. the controls are intuitive I really like the one touch video - big button on the side facing you, and really visible - press and the video starts, AND FAST!! almost no perceptible delay, from hitting the on button, and ready to take a pic bright and sharp pics - with the lens big, the low light pics are superb. The reviews on line rate it very high as a waterproof - usually #1. Did I mention it was FAST!! downside is it is a little heavy ( I had a pentax wp before) and only 5x zoom. So far the battery life has been very good. and recharging is easy - plug the usb connector into a power slot. 30 mins and go. Car, computer , outlet, whatever. All that comes at a cost, and it is a little pricey. Talk to the folks at The Camera Store.
