bigfry Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 Hi I'm a total noob to trolling motors. But I'm in the market for one for my aluminum Hyde for when I do take the daughter out so I won't have to worry about rowing. I have a motor mount so that's handy as well Can anyone recommend what would be the most ideal setup. I guess money isn't really an issue. I prefer comfort and quality over price. But not too expensive. thanks Quote
SilverDoctor Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 Owned several boats throughthe years. I have had excellent experience with Minn Kota. Solid build, owned 3 that all performed flawless. I would go at least 55lb thrust, bigger if you can afford it. Also had a Minn Kota Terrvora 80lbs on my old Bosten Whaler and it pushed her along great even in ocean swells. I think the ultimate would be 80lb 24v., needs the more batteries but very nice. Quote
Tungsten Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 You ll want the maximizer as it uses much less battery. 55 lb is enough only need one battery then. I use the bow mount so i can control with the foot pedal but the tiller steer would also work just need tge exstention so you can stay in the rowers seat Quote
bigfry Posted May 8, 2016 Author Posted May 8, 2016 Thanks for the suggestions guys http://www.cabelas.ca/product/45039/minn-kota-endura-max Or http://www.cabelas.ca/product/6729/minn-kota-traxxis-transom-mount-trolling-motors These two are what I'm looking at pulling the trigger on. Does it matter if it's a 36" shaft or 42". The first one looks like it has the maximizer on it but only comes with 42" shaft. The other one comes in a 36" shaft. I don't know what to do Quote
fishinglibin Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 I would go with a 350 GM V8 Long Shaft. 1 Battery. 1 Quote
fishteck Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 Go to a German built Torqeedo electric motor. I've dad one for 4 years. Not cheap, Estimated at 4 Hp thrust Depending on the torque you set can run upwards of 1 hour. See photo battery in top of unit. Quote
Tungsten Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 get someone to measure your transom height when your in the boat,36" might be too short if you move to the bow or have a big guy up there. 1 Quote
SanJuanWorm Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 get someone to measure your transom height when your in the boat,36" might be too short if you move to the bow or have a big guy up there. This is the only way to do it. Make sure the prop will be well in the water too. 1 Quote
Swede Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 Am running a 55 pound trust traxxis with a 42 inch shaft length on my Hyde XL . It works awesome for lake fishing. 1 Quote
bigfry Posted May 11, 2016 Author Posted May 11, 2016 sweet thanks Drake, i will definately get whatever setup you have what battery do you recommend, and how long does one charge normally last you? Quote
Villageidiot Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 I run the 85lb, 24v thrust traxxis on my XL low profile. Pushes awesome. Besides the fact you need 2 batteries. Perfect setup for tearing around or if you need to get up the k lakes or maligne. 1 Quote
Tungsten Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Batteries are rated in amp/hrs,more the better.Sizes are usually a group 27 or 31 IIRC A large battery kept on the lower speeds will last a weekend if used sparingly. If you like to rip around and have it in rabbit all the time then a battery will only last an afternoon. Villageidiot Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 85 lb would be a beast. Sure is. You'd never think that 30lb of thrust up from a 55lb would make that much of a difference but it sure does. 1 Quote
creekside Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 I have both the 55 and the 80 in my drift boat. Use the 55 as a spare in case the 80 craps out. You don't want to row a drift boat into a head wind if your motor craps out. I used the 55 the first season and it was OK until the wind came up. Had to run at full throttle , burned out all my batteries and just to made it to the dock. With the 80 I've had no issues more power and at lower speeds, gives the option to run and gun to various locations and have never been pushed backwards in a head wind. Always have a spare battery or set of batteries, an inline surge protector, and a switch to change battery banks. Ray Quote

Tungsten Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 considering weight and cost youd be farther ahead with a 2 HP long shaft much lighter and only need a liter of gas and never have worry about batteries 1 Quote
Vitalshok Posted May 15, 2016 Posted May 15, 2016 There's a very good topic on Alberta outdoorsman forum on battery's for electric trolling motors it's ver very detailed and might assist you in a motor and the proper battery. Quote
ericlin0122 Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 Get a gas motor 3hp weight 40 lbs. never have to worry about running out of battery. Quote
bigfry Posted May 16, 2016 Author Posted May 16, 2016 I have a 4 hp yammie. Cannot use on all lakes Will be buying the 85 lb traxxis Thanks for all the suggestions 1 Quote
Villageidiot Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 Yeah, you can't use a gas motor on many AB lakes. Nor can you on lakes in the national parks except minnewanka. So that doesn't solve the problem. But my 4hp Yammy on the back does put me up the bow nicely when i want to re-fish some banks. Quote
TroutTracker Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 I have had several deep cycle batteries for my 55lb Minnkota, first bought a Bass Pro and it wasn't great, last season I got a costco deep cycle (biggest one you can get) and it's WAY better, half the price and has a warrentee! Definitely recommend the Costco Battery - single charge works for a camping weekend, if you use is sparingly... Note - don't bother with the solar panel, better off boosting off a truck or charging back at camp - which is what i had to do with Bass Pro batttery Hope this helps, EM Quote
