Regulations Area Confusion...new To This.
SilverDoctor replied to blinktwice's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Always check the official regulations, the "Alberta Fishing Guide" is just that, a guide not the source document. You'll notice they have a disclaimer at the top of the page and a link to the real regulations. I wonder how many people will be caught by this. -

Getting Ready For Upcoming Hatches
SilverDoctor replied to jaymack's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
It really depends how you love to fish dry, You can fish one dry pattern all year and be modestly successful. the Adams is a good general pattern, or you can "match the hatch" and carry a variety of sizes and colors for various stages. Its all good. I have a small box of Mayflies, another one caddis etc. -

Hint - Sculpin Wool, Ram's Wool is a good substitute, as is Craft fur and Macrome yarn, if you can't locate some drop into a yarn shop with a sample.

What Is The Most Common Hook And Size Used For Sjw
SilverDoctor replied to ghus32's topic in Fly Tying Bench
Bending the hook offset slightly works great, I tend to get more hookups, with hooks in general, especially with barbless. -
Yes , most certainly, these are great for huge variety of patterns like Royal Coachman, Stimulators etc. I love the black as it maks the hackle look denser.

The hair stacker is the way to go, and old pen barrel works good. Teh trick is to pack it really good in back and in front of the eyes.

I certainly experienced the same on the streams listed here with good and bad days. Although flooding did play a huge role on many of them, affecting not only trout but food sources, there seem to be a real problem with poaching and lack of policing, once a resource is removed it takes a long time to recover public education is still lacking. And the bait containers that festoon the areas close to roads are a testament to that.

Looking To Get Out For Some Pike This Spring!
SilverDoctor replied to BigFoamy's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Mostof the pothole lakes are great for wade pike fishing along with larger lakes like McGreger, Badger and Gull. Lots to choose from just look for areas that have either drop offs or structure. Early season will see a lot of big fish in the shallows. Although a boat, tube etc. makes it nice for mobility, I've had a lot of fun just wading lakes and casting. -
They tend to be found in the high country, hike in high alpine lakes, places like Southfork, Barnaby Ridge and Rainy Ridge north of Waterton/Glacier Park among others. I've hiked in for them in my younger years, helicopter fishing is a good way to go to get to Golden lakes. Its usually sight fishing as the alpine waters are gin clear. We found long 12 ft leaders where the ticket, using a variety of flies from Caddis to Chironomids and tiny streamers. A gem of a Trout.

Questions For Selling Flies
SilverDoctor replied to FlyTyer16's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Yep tough to compete out there as Vagabond said, but there are still niche markets and rush needs out there. You have to be able to tie fast and consistent for the general market, be a marketer and salesmen also. In addition you need volume on hand for orders and by that I don't mean dozens but hundreds of each pattern, the business is probably different then what you think. I had a shingle up for almost 30 years but just do specialty now. -
There was a time that hooks where pretty standard among brands, that seems to have gone by the wayside. Each company seems to have developed their own systems.
