  1. Actually no the Ari ‘t Hart reels are out of my league. Brother in law in BC has one, incredible piece of machinery. This one on the Deer Creek is a is a Airflo Balance. 911W. nice large arbor with great balance on the rod. It has a sealed drag that's very nice. Put it through it's paces over the last year and quite like it. Interesting design. What I really like about it is the way it's set up for palming both rims for better control while playing fish. Decent reel, great capacity wasn't expensive, lots of bang for the buck, probably a sleeper that will disappear from the market.
  2. If I was to fish that area again a Spey rod would definably be on the agenda without question.
  3. I'm no expert but I would go with an minimum 8 or 9 weight. Those bruisers will give you a run for you money. A 7 weight might be a tad light, although I've seen a couple 7's that should have been rated 8ths. The thing is out there you never know what you are going to run in to. You want to be able to control the fish. Don't forget large arbor reel with lots of backing.
  4. Not the highest end system here but a great mid trout Spey rod. Have really enjoyed throwing flies and nymph rigs with the little Deer Creek 5/6. Had a ball with skid bitch and Stimulators last fall. Throws a nice Rio windcutter, a variety of Skagit and Scandia lines. Have had a ton of fun with this rod and coaxed the odd Trout and Steelhead to net. It's been a great rod and a lot easier on the old body and sholders than the big fly rods. My Tennis elbow disappeared.
  5. Mind you another reason to put together a rod is to get the components on it that you want. Like a custom reel seat or handle in exotic wood and better guides and the like. That's why I've assembled a few for myself (assembled as opposed to built, I just assemble, Don actually builds em).
  6. I got my last batch of anti static bags from a small computer repair place down the street from where I work (any computor shop that installs memory should have em.). The bags are for shipping memory etc. I asked him to save me some discards and got 4. They go a long way. I just slice a bunch thin strips off with an exacto knife as I need them. They make for very translucent looking bodies.
  7. Dad got me through the top of the ear when I was 10 with an Atlantic salmon fly. Just clipped it off whit pliers and we went back to fishing. After all the bite was on.
  8. You guys are on, I have some great litter box bugger patterns.
  9. Mmmmm... fried Sea Kitty. Peta always reminds me that natural selection does not always work. Sort of like a Platypus with a unicorn horn and hoofs. They make no sense except to other brain dead's who have no idea about the natural world.
  10. Works great, I use it on Caddis and mayfly egg sacks. Give it a shot.
  11. God, I'm tired just looking at the survey. It doesn't make sense to me as I use a number of rods for different fishing situations including lake stream and variations of.
  12. So did you ever build another one after that one Don? He He, one of these days I godda save up enough for one of your wonderful magic sticks.
  13. Take some lessons before you buy or hook up with a tier with some experience. Save some grief that way and know what you should buy.
  14. You can watch Fly tying the Anglers Art previous seasons here
  15. Think Computer ergonomics. works the same. I find I need to get up and stretch every now and again. Shoulder blade pain usually means you're tensing up. There was a discussion a while back on this if you do a search.
  16. I love "found" stuff for tying. Old electrical cords for wire (coper johns). Computer anti static bags for Cromies, Holographic chocolate bar wrappers for streamer bodies. Any holiday will glean you a host of foil and feathers. Not to mention dollar stores, and of course Micheal's. Fabric stores for great floss. It goes on and on. I once found a feather placeholder made of Jungle Cock nails. Not to mention feather dusters. Lots of goodies out there.
  17. Flytyer hit it on the head, you need to tie for the size of prey available at the time. I run from 1 inch to four inch patterns. Through the season size up for fry. Spend some time looking at the size of the baitfish at tie to it.
  18. I just like the look of bidot tails.
  19. I think I would be more wary of the water than the fish. Even on pristine water you never know what is in it, or what has expired updtream. A quick boil or bring your own can save you some trying times.
  20. Thanks for posting It made my day. Miss that area of BC.
  21. Try tying in a small dubbin ball or thread ball on teh back of the hook first, you can then then tie in the biot and flair them to the proper angle, adding a bit of cement keeps em in place. As was said rubber tails work great too.
  22. Beautiful fish thanks for posting.
  23. Humm, lucky, I'm working today and Friday. but new years will be nice.
