  1. Fishtales will be hosting some spey classes in the spring and summer that may fit some travel plans. Others might be advertising on here a bit later in the winter, too.
  2. Beetles are great on many east slope streams and lakes! That last pattern should serve you well.
  3. It's not just the fish populations you'd be screwing with but everything in the food chain. If the cause is deforestation, loss of habitat, removal of fish, etc, fix those problems by reversing the damage or changing the regulations instead of trying an artificial fix that could be subject to a budget cut by a bureaucrat in the future.
  4. After seeing the prices for some steelhead flies (some around $20 a piece for an intruder style), I won't feel as bad if I lose a couple to fish or snags.
  5. I believe I heard Robert Eagleson somewhere between the announcements for idiots to move their cars (Hook and Hackle member).
  6. 1) SAGD will need the energy for the steam, how much depends on how the oil price is affecting developement but it's either gas or nuclear 2) I think it was American Angler I read it in, may not be on the forefront of their agenda, but from past reading it probably depends on who is leading the organization 3) http://www.scientificamerican.com/article....ulic-fracturing
  7. The oi lsands alone could take the output from the Mackenzie pipeline. A conversion to natural gas might seem great, but that's just because the price is so low right now. Shale gas is also being fought against by many environmental groups, including TU because it requires a lot of water, and can potentially contaminate water sources - it's akin to the oil sands where extraction is going to cost more and as conventional production goes down, the price will go up. There was a story in one of the mags last month about a formation in Pennsylvania already having trouble because companies are drawing much more water than they are allotted from the streams.
  8. Being charged doesn't mean anything. It's not until it has gone through the courts and he's found guilty. Might take some time if he fights it. If it's expensive to fix, it might be worth getting real legal advice.
  9. I have a Hamilton Beach espresso machine that I picked up @ Future Shop last year that has served me well and wasn't too expensive. We did do a test of Flavia, Keurig, and Tassimo machines at work for the new office, and the Keurig won both on taste and ease of use. You can also buy special cups that allow you to use your own coffee.
  10. Polyleaders are cheaper but you won't want to loop them onto the end of your regular dry fly line because it won't cast very nice. If you don't have a single hand skagit or similar line to handle the extra weight you can cut a regular line and make an interchangeable tip system. I believe Mike @ Southbow fishes streamers with a full sink and may be able to offer some help. I know it can help slow your swing down a bit compared to a sink tip.
  11. I have the Simms G3 - it almost has too much room because it can really get weighed down if you're a bit overzealous with the packing.
  12. Nice report! Unfortunately my moments didn't seem to last past the time it takes to say "Oh *hit!" to myself. But I'll know better for next time!
  13. I think I had a 4" brookie on a 7 weight to start - then I took a 10 year break before I got back into it, so keep at it. Murky water can make the fish feel more secure, so it's a great time to swing a streamer.

  15. http://hookandhackleclub.org/ Meetings start up again in September, including the fall fishout, which would be a great place to learn as there's 30 or so other people there. Also, post in the Fishing Get Togethers - offer to drive to the Highwood or Liv and you'll probably have a couple takers.
  16. With the hot weather and warm water temps, hit the deep runs when the sun is out but the banks after the sun goes down.
  17. Note that using a headlamp to attract fish is against the regulations but using a glow in the dark indicator should be ok: It Is Unlawful To: Use lights to sportfish unless the light is attached to a hook or line used in angling. http://www.albertaregulations.ca/fishingregs/
  18. Look into some Dancraft FT blanks online - Fishtales carries them too. Beware though, as I built on a 10' 4wt FT blank but it performs best for me with a 6 wt line.
