  2. The rules I've seen usually relate to total length of your setup - 3 to 3.5 times the rod length. If Dan McCrimmon comes through town this year, I'd suggest taking his class - he showed us how to do a scandi cast with the entire loop in front of us.
  3. Some reading for those of us at work: http://www.caddisflyshop.com/rio-skagit-mow-tips.html If you did your own you could also use a slow to intermediate section above the sinker instead of a floating section. This might be more useful for some bull trout streams than on the Bow.
  4. You might want to have an instructor watch while you're casting, but try shortening your leader a bit and see what happens. You're at 42 feet with that type of setup, which may be a bit long. Also, if you don't have the room for a bigger loop, your scandi head and the entire leader may be in the water when you're trying to cast.
  5. That's the idea - it marks the transition to the running line. Usually 6" or so of the running line is left outside the tip when casting. Of course, you can always go shorter depending on your needs and casting ability.
  6. I've tried it with a 5 wt rio gold, 6 wt SA distance line, and the modified 40+ for swinging small streamers - the 6 wt works good for overhead and nymphing and the 5 can be a little light at close range. I also wanted something for the float tube, so I went with the faster rod.
  7. I couldn't find what I wanted for a 10' light switch rod, so I took the course at Fishtales with Wayne and built my own on a 10' 4 wt Dancraft FT blank. So far it's been a great stick for nymphing but also can punch a line a fair ways for the stillwaters. I've also got a cut down 40+ for a scandi head. Taped up and ready for the reel seat: Replacing the fly tying mess with the rod building mess: And a couple fish to break it in:

  9. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/edmonton/story/20...river-fine.html A YouTube video showing an Alberta man driving a large truck through the North Saskatchewan River has led to an $800 fine. "The video was critical, because the licence plate was visible," said Kathy Kiel, who speaks for Alberta's Department of Sustainable Resource Development. Ryan Halyk, 32, was charged under the province's Forests Act for driving on trails that are maintained for off-highway vehicles by local volunteer associations. The trails can be damaged by large trucks, said a release from the department. The river is also home in the fall to spawning mountain whitefish and bull trout, and their eggs and habitat can be damaged by vehicles. The four-minute video was shot on the 2009 Labour Day weekend and posted on Sept. 21. Provincial staff became aware of the video in October, and it has since been taken down. "It's the first time the Lands Division of Sustainable Resource Development has used social media to gather evidence and lay charges," said Kiel. Halyk pleaded guilty to operating an on-highway vehicle within a "forest land use zone" in provincial court in Rocky Mountain House on March 17. He was also assessed a $120 victim surcharge, a fee added to environmental fines aimed at compensating parties harmed by an offence.
  10. Sundre has rivers and creeks with trout and whitefish, and some still waters within driving distance. A 5 would cover most of it, but a 2 or 3 would be fun on the creeks.
  11. Sustained anchor casts are usually better for streamers, but it's not just casting - it depends on what type of line you're using, tips, etc. Check if fishtales has Rio's speycasting or the skagitmaster DVD's for rent (or join the hook and hackle club ) just to give you an idea of what's out there for setups. There is plenty of spey casting instruction coming up with Southbow, Whistler, and Fishtales holding clinics starting in mid April.
  12. I use some 30 gauge wire for bigger leeches; other stuff is probably 34 gauge.
  13. Don't have one personally but the Hydros series has the same blanks, different components. Best to try it for yourself.
  14. Another convert! Try giving the line a short strip to break the water tension when setting the hook.
  15. There's some sales on Ross Evolutions at Fishtales, don't know what they have left, but either those or some of the cheaper Lamson stuff with their sealed drags.
  16. Just got an email from Bow River Shuttles. They do reports in the spring and take pics of each launch, and you can get them by signing up on their site.
  17. You won't need a cheater for a rod that short. It's meant for longer spey rods to keep your leader+line length between 3 and 3.5 times the length of the rod. For an overhead line you will have to bump it up - possibly to a 10 weight but search around on forums like speypages or ask the manufacturer or pro staff as someone may have already done the work for you.
