I got plastic boxes from Gregg Distributors, plastic, 24 compartments, 2"x2" with a curved bottom for easy hook retreval. I got 5 which I divide up into like hooks, streamers, nymphs, etc. Price was right also.

Calgary Bow River Weir Project (harvie Passage)
jdangler replied to bigbowtrout's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
I saw that on the news last night, so I was windering also if anyone has taken a drift boat thru yet? The water looks ok, but I saw some gates that I was unsure if you need to go thru or around. Also they dont want you using quite yet, but just wondering for some day in the future. I opens a whole new stretch of river. -

Finally did it, got my first fish with my spey rod & what a first, 20" Brown on a Bead Head Black Rabbit Strip Leach. The long rod is quite a bit different when fight a fish, seemed like a easier fight than on a single hand rod, and getting a hold of the fish was interesting also. I used the method of turning the drag down on the reel and feeding line and stepping towards the fish, grabbing the line and hand pulling him in. No pics, just in my memory.

Congrats, I havent got my first on the Spey yet, but inspired. Thanks -
Try the John Deere dealer. They sell a 1650 watts model. They use to have 2 models, @ 1700 & 1100. If they got one of those, might get a deal

I have been watching videos about casting thru the winter, and really been concentrating on Ed Ward's Skagit Master so today I was able to get out today & give it a good try. Well let me say that maybe not everycast yet but when you get the fly, leader,10' sink tip, 25' of Sagit line & 15-20' of running line shoot out & give the rod a shake when it stops it is a beautiful thing. Man what a blast, even though no fish it didnt matter, just let me cast again. Great Fun!

I've got one, & have had it for I think maybe 3 years or so and have not had one issue, it always there, always works, gotten it wet & works fine. I havent taken a picture under water yet, but will someday, not worried about it just never seem to do it.I think the newer version has more Pixels now, mine only has only 3.2 & for me it, that isnt a big deal. One thing get rechargable batteries, much more convenient.

Welcome to the board Mike. I'm not sure what 70 wieght thread is but if your wraping lead I assume your tying nymphs or streamers. Starting out I would use a 3/0 thread for the streamers & 6/0 for the nymphs or even 8/0 for the very small nymphs, but eventually you will get a feel. The feel is for how tight you need to make your wraps or hard you can pull on the thread to make tight wraps. Go out and get stronger thread, ask at the flyshop, let them know what your tying, thay will steer you the right direction & maybe you could take a beginner tying class, every shop offers them & are well worth the money, show you the tricks, the methods, & how to use the tools, it will take out the frustration & will make it enjoyable to tie

I was at Mckinnon one night and there was a Warden checking people coming off the river. He checked the cooler of a couple of fellas & found a Brown over the legsl size for keeping. He asked me to realese it. So I spent quite a long while trying to revive the fish so he was able to swim away on his own. Everytime when I let go of him he just made a couple of movements and went to the bottom. The warden said no matter what he goes back , whether he lives or not to be part as Headscan says the Biomass. I hope he did live, he did seem more powerfull when I released him for the last time.

Fly Rod Raffle Only A Few Hours Left!!!
jdangler replied to reevesr1's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
From someone who has had Prostrate Cancer and here today because of early detection & people like Rick in doing this that I can still enjoy our sport. So thank you Rick & all who is donating, the Rod is a great bonus & incentive. Also to all of you guys listen when I say EARLY DETECTION is the key...get yourself checked regularily especially after the age of 40. -
I'm also in need of boots, the felt on mine was worn down to almost nothing but the boot itself was still in pretty good shape. To me the jury is still out on these new rubber soled boots. I like the idea of studs but because I have a boat & there is no way studded boots are going in the boat. So what I have done for now is replace the felt soles with a kit with new soles & glue. I thought this kit may not work worth a darn but so far the soles have worked great & have remained glued to the boots just fine. So maybe the rubber soled boot technology will be improved a little more in the next couple of years then I will buy some. I fish in Montana quite a bit also so I'm also concerend about bringing these evasive species back & forth so I have even thought of having 2 pairs of boots.

Hey good thought, Another + for the Spey. Thanks, Bowcane

Thanks, your answers & advice helped a lot.

Maxwell, the time of year you mention is one of the reason I went to the Spey, stay dry & warmer & get the casts further out. Do you use a normal leader setup like a single hand rod for nymphing like a 6'-7' leader with indicator and 2 flies, with an upstream cast & drift down with rod held high with a mend or 2 thrown in?
-
Thanks Fellas. Confirmed my thoughts about Skagit & Streamers, & sticking with my one hander fot nymphing. I will have a look Rio's new 450 gr. Skagit Flight Head so, sound it would be the right setup for my rod.

I'm sure these questions have been asked before, but I havent been able to find the answers & some of I havent been able to understand the answer. I fairly new to this spey thing and wanted to get into it because ot looked fun & a new challenge. I fish the Bow primarily so I thought a Spey outfit would be great for Streamers & maybe longer drifts when nymphing. I bought a Echo 6126 which is 12'6" rod for 6/7 weight and have a Windcutter line. I have done a little nymphing & but mostly streamers. I havent caught anything yet but no biggie. So my questions are #1. For streamers would it be better with a Skagit compact head with a sinking cheater & short 4'-6' sinking leader to get some depth or use the Windcutter with a longer leader with weighted streamer? The longer leader I was thinking it would be hard to turn over & awkward. #2 am I wrong in thinking of nymphing with the Spey to get a long drift? Casting is practice & more practice. I accept that, I have gone to casting schools & enjoyed them, enjoyted the people, bought the DVD's. I see all the threads on all the boards on what lines to use, what weights of lines to use, lengths, Scandi, Skagit, or Windcutter. For now I just want to know how to fish with it. Thanks Bob
