Vagabond replied to Fisher's topic in Spey Casters Lounge
Envious!!!How'd things turn out with your stolen boat?Recovered?Replaced? -
If you strike out at FTs,Cdn Tire Shawville has lotsa FishPond gear, not sure about the tippet holder though?WTF,you'll be in the neighbourhood anyway?

Dreaming Of Summer In Alberta, Stuck In Nb...
Vagabond replied to upperbowtrekker's topic in Photo Posts
Born n raised NBer,the Restigouche is still on my bucket list, and unfortunately now as a non-res can no longer apply for the Crown Reserve water. Always got my chrome fix on the Miramichi, with lotsa family along it's banks and Dad now retired to his camp near Doaktown. Many years of fishn Boisetown-Blackville on the Main SW,with the odd day here and there on the tribs,Cains,Renous,Dungarvon,Sevogle,Little SW,and one of my favorite trips was doing overnighter floats on occasion way up in the SW from Juniper-Half Moon. -
Got A Switch Rod For X Mas And Need Some Help Please
Vagabond replied to Vitalshok's topic in Spey Casters Lounge
I find nymphing with compact heads, whether Scandi or Skagit ,is fine at close to medium range, but for distant drifts the running line isn't conducive to ease of mending.I've considered picking up the full length Speydicator line, but can't really justify it for the little amount of nymphing that I do,plus consider it would require having to carry a dedicated spool.....but for an enthusiastic 2H nympher,it seems like it would be the answer? -

I have the exact same setup and it's my #1 go-to for the Bow...swingn soft hackles. Love swinging those soft hackles.

Contrary to the first reply and aaa's preference,if I had to choose,I'd much rather have a longer rod for wading, and a shorter rod in a boat.Truth be told,I'd rather have a longer rod in any conditions, including tiny brush choked streams where casting is irrelevant, but reach is often an advantage. The difference between an 8'6" and 9' rod of the same model is so minuscule that it's hardly worth debating, but I can't think of a single advantage that the 8'6" would claim over the 9',but the longer rod holds a slight edge over the shorter model IMHO....ie;longer rods pick up more line with less effort, mend better, and for the wading angler, generally are able to aerialize more line when wading deep without slapping your backcast.Again,it's hardly worth arguing over 6",but say comparing the same model 10' to an 8'6",the 10 footer is the clear winner for mending and distance casting for 98% of angler's casting abilities......the other 2% can throw a 100' line with either a willow switch or a broom stick equally well.

Murray, most bucks "normally" drop their antlers in January, although some will shed as early as mid-Dec or as late as well into March. Coincidentally, the latest I've ever personally seen a buck carrying antlers was in fact along the Bow below Glenmore,a 3x3WT still sporting headgear at the end of April.

The Bow is as big and bigger then many of the west coast rivers that I've fished.I fish Spey on the Bow 90% of the time. -
X2....interesting that they give points for sound, with the scoring criteria being "most classic sounding" reels.....hmmmmAlso,hard for me to give much credibility to a reel shootout that doesn't even include Islanders.

Agree 100% with Jim...skimp on the reel if you must.Id use a cheap reel before cheap line any day! ....and drag capabilities are wayyyyyyy overrated on any reel IMHO,but especially so on "trout size" reels.WTF do you need a drag for on a 3wt?Hell,every one of my outfits from 3wt trout rods to 9wt Spey wears a good'ol click n pawl classics. I always find it quite amusing to read threads wherein the amazing drag of this reel or that is the subject,or better yet, recommendations to newbs regarding what reel they "need" to catch Bow R. trout,LMAO......they are TROUT fer chrissakes!! -

Overpriced plastic guts...yuck!I was thissssssss close to pulling the trigger on an Abel Creek 2 for my 3wt when I spotted a Marquis#4 w/spare spool on-line at 1/3 the cost of the new Abel.....needless to say my 3wt now wears a Marquis#4,couldn't be happier with it. -
Highwood bulls taste muddy but Upper Oldman bulls 8-14" long, rolled in flour, sizzled in bacon grease, washed down with Molson...breakfast of champs.....most important meal of the day,9 outta 10 dentists recommend, exceeds daily Omega 3 requirements, you'll be catching cutties in your teeth and fending off grizz encounters with yer urine.....try it!!

Glad I'm not the only one shopping at Michaels,haha.....some tying materials plus storage drawer cabinet from there....and custom tie all of my own tapered Maxima leaders as well, anything from 4-18' long, trout to salmon,35 lb butts down to 8lb tippet,20-4 etc, superior IMHO to any factory tapers and all for under a buck each. Also,I'm a bit of an amateur hack at splicing/welding custom Spey lines and home brewed MOW tips.

Go to FishTales and sign out the Airflo Scandi loaner kit,you might be pleasantly surprised at how delicate a presentation you can make with a Scandi line....ie;I'm fishing a Beulah Platinum 11'7 5wt Spey w/300gr Scandi and no trouble at all to OH cast with it and land a #18 caddis as softly as my SH 8' 3wt or any other light rod for that matter....plus the ease of longer casts and super mending control with the long rod is awesome, this rod really does anything I ask of it on the Bow from swinging weighted streamers and wets on mono or polys to skaters to tiny dries....my other rods collected a lot of dust last year. I don't know anything about the Dually, but sign out the Scandi kit and try a few lines on it,probly in the 360-420 range...maybe start with 390? -
Converse HighTops,lol.....seriously though, why not?Wet waded in sneakers/ jeans for most of my youth, pretty sure it still works....in fact, probly caught more trout before I was 20yo then I have since or ever will again.....siggggghhhhhh
