The passage of Bill 4, known as the Park Amendment Act, will make way for industrial incursions into provincial parklands including energy extraction, construction of pipelines and industry-led research. The bill, quietly introduced in mid-February, has already met significant resistance in B.C. where the environment minister received "thousands of letters" of opposition, according to Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society's Peter Wood. "There has been absolutely zero public consultation, and the pace at which this was pushed through suggests this was never a consideration," he said in a press release. "This bill undermines the very definition of what a 'park' is," Gwen Barlee from the Wilderness Committee said in the same statement, "given that our protected areas will now be open to industrial activity." "This is a black day for B.C. parks -- the provincial government is ensuring that none of our parks are now safe from industrial development," she said. According to staff lawyer Andrew Gage with the West Coast Environmental Law the bill is "difficult to square" with the sentiments underlying the B.C. Parks Service, which claims provincial parks and conservancies are a "public trust" for the "protection of natural environments for the inspiration, use and enjoyment of the public." In an overview piece, Gage wrote "Bill 4 allows for industry (and others) to carry out 'research' in provincial parks related to pipelines, transmission lines, roads and other industrial activities that might require park land. It also reduces legal protection for smaller parks." He noted that preliminary "research" carried out by mining company Taseko in preparation for an environmental assessment of the controversial Prosperity Mine included the drilling of 59 test pits, eight drill holes 50 to 75 metres in depth, and 10 holes roughly 250 metres in depth to collect metallurgical samples. The tests also required the creation of 23.5 kilometres of exploratory trails. Bill 4 claims permits for "research" will only be considered after a "thorough review of protected area values," yet, Gage writes, "this requirement is nowhere to be found in Bill 4." This amounts to a "'trust, us, we're government' approach," writes Gage. Previously, park use permits were only granted to those able to demonstrate the proposed activity was "necessary for the preservation or maintenance of the recreational values of the park involved." Bill 4 rids the Park Act of this safeguard. "The government has sent a clear signal that it is open to having pipelines cut through our globally renowned protected areas," said Al Martin of the B.C. Wildlife Federation. "The Act will now allow industrial expansion in some of B.C.'s most beloved parks, placing them at risk." Critics are also concerned the changes will open pristine landscapes to environmentally destructive oil and gas extraction processes. "This legislation opens the door to pipelines, oil and gas drilling and industrial activities that are counter to the values that created our parks system," said Darryl Walker from the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union. "If Bill 4 passes, 2014 will be the year that B.C. Parks changed forever," he said. Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society and a group of other environmental NGOs have already collected nearly 10,000 signatures and letters in an effort to stop the implementation of the bill. These groups are claiming the total lack of public consultation left local communities, park users and conservation groups out of the decision making process. I'll 2nd that,have a Konic 2.0 on its 3rd 5wt rod over 5yrs of hard use and it works good as new.Think I paid $110-120ish for it new 6 years ago this May? Fwiw,it's also been punished by several Atlantic salmon when I broke the handle off an old Hardy few years ago,including a scorching 20lb bright hen that damn near spooled that lil reel 3x before being subdued,so I'm perty sure it'll handle any trout that swims in AB.

Just checked my old source in NB,it's listed as "temporarily unavailable"...odd,I've never seen that before,not there anyways? I've subbed black squirrel tail for bear quite often.The natural black tails I've collected personally when the opportunity arises (melanistic grey squirrels)aren't bad but the dyed tails are more shiny jet black.Squirrel tail is nice wing material really,tons of hairwing wets call for it,many patterns the only diff is bear or grey/red,dyed squirrel and give the fly another name.

Fwiw,don't get me wrong,I don't think for a second Ted Williams was all that,to the contrary,I can't stand the guy,and this Coleman clown sounds just like him. My apologies to Wulff,Ward,Kreh and Christ for mentioning Williams in the same sentence.

Getting back to bcubes's point on hucking triple nymph rigs 30' upstream under a bobber....if that is ones idea of "flyfishing" as seems to be the case with 80-90% of Bow anglers that I encounter,then there's likely not too many (any?)appropriately sized rods that won't do that adequately.On that note,I'm really surprised given the popularity of nymphing on Bow that I can only recall ever seeing ONE centerpinner vs.maybe a couple thousand indi-nymphers using fly line over the course of 3 years and maybe 200 days on Bow?Whats up with that?Why not use the best tool for the job?? Anyhow,I guess I like the casting aspect of flyfishing as much or more as the catching?For me it's more about the "how" then the "how many" fish I catch.I generally only resort to nymphing when I'm going thru a severe slump with streamers and just really need to feel a tug.

Ironically,I've used that golf analogy myself when a newb asks my opinion on high end rods.A high end rod is not going to instantly turn an inexperienced caster into Lee Wulff any more then a high end custom set of golf clubs is going to make an amateur golfer into Tiger Woods.

I'm not trying to compare apples to oranges,I'm saying I liked my FLi 5wt far better than BVK 5wt,and loved the One 8wt hands down over my FLi 8wt.....sometimes in life you really do get what you pay for.

DOH....was hoping it didn't come out that way. Jest sayn tho,was very impressed with the One when I tried it,ear to ear grin instantly,lol,but the expo pond is really just to small to stretch it out like I'd have liked to.That thing was a cannon,and just what I thought I was looking for in a SH 8wt.effortless to shoot for distance and the Konnetic blank is just stupid accurate for hitting bullseyes.

X2 what BF said,the head looks great in the posted pic.I guess I misunderstood in the OP and thought the pic was of a store bought fly?If that's how your own heads are turning out,to echo bcube,your tying a streamer,not a floater,and it looks just fine from where I'm sitting,I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

One possible explanation I haven't seen mentioned yet might be clear cutting in the headwaters and the resultant excessive siltation of streams with runoff from haul roads,skidder ruts,and the general inability of the watershed to release cool groundwater gradually. A fisheries biologist that I met once while fishing back east was taking water samples from a previously wonderful salmon/trout river told me that Atlantic salmon and brook trout are quite susceptible to a fatal gill infection from heavily silted water.I know rainbows can tolerate more silted water and fare better then Brookies in same.Just guessing,but I would assume that cutts and bulls having evolved in the pristine environs that they did might also be vulnerable to excessive silt?Rivers get "blown out" and run dirty far more frequently these days due to humans altering the landscape then they ever would have historically,which surely can't be good for our little finned friends?

I haven't tied Dungeons or worked with dumbbell eyes combined with spun hair,but I've spun my fair share of deer hair for Muddlers,bombers,buckbugs etc.,so I'll share my method for tying nice full heads to the hook eye. Basically,when tying in the final lift of hair closest to the hook eye,I hold the butt end of the deer hair towards the hook bend,with the long untrimmed tips extending forward over the eye.Spin as per usual,and you end up with a sort of reverse muddler collar.Its then very easy to grasp those long tips,pull them back over the eye,pack that last lift tight against the previous lift.and get a few wraps of thread tight behind the eye,whip finish as usual,then trim to shape. So using that same method,I'm guessing maybe you are tying in the dumbbell too soon and having to mess with trying to spin hair in and around it? What I would suggest is using the method I described above with a bit of planning prior to tying in dumbbell. Tie your collar as usual,and 1 or 2(?)more lifts of hair,stopping short of where you want the dumbbell to sit.For the final lift prior to tying in the dumbbell,spin in the reverse collar as above,pulling the tips back and packing the hair,then held in place with a few wraps as if finishing a muddler.When you let go of those tips after wrapping thread on the shank to hold that lift back,the tips will flare forward again.Then tie your dumbbell in as tight to that lift as you can get it,then tie in another "normal" rear facing collar in front of the dumbbell?Im thinking that should fill things in pretty good?Then just fill whatever space remains behind the hook eye with another lift or two as required,again using the reverse collar method for the final lift.Trim to shape and hope for the best?? Again,I've never tied a dungeon,but if it were me,that's what I'd try? Let me know how it works out if you try it?

LOL....well said.For that matter,I test fired a Sage One at the expo last year,and it felt miles ahead of my FLi,which feels better than my BVK. One vs BVK?? ....no contest. After the expo I coveted and drooled over an 8wt One for the rest of the winter and spring,until my bud turned me onto/talked me into the Zenith....no regrets there wutsoever! That said,I still wouldn't mind trying the One vs. Zenith head to head one of these days on a river,the 60' casting pond at expo isn't long enough to really get a feel for what those cannons are capable of,even after backing off the platform an extra 20'.

I bought a bird feeder. What a lovely bird feeder it was. I filled it lovingly with seed. Within a Week we had hundreds of birds Taking advantage of the Continuous flow of free and Easily accessible food. But then the birds started Building nests in the boards Of the patio, above the table, And next to the barbecue. Then came the poop. It was Everywhere: on the patio tile, The chairs, the table .. Everywhere! Then some of the birds Turned mean. They would Dive bomb me and try to Peck me even though I had Fed them out of my own Pocket. And others birds were Boisterous and loud. They Sat on the feeder and Squawked and screamed at All hours of the day and night And demanded that I fill it When it got low on food. After a while, I couldn't even Sit on my own back porch Anymore. So I took down the Bird feeder and in three days The birds were gone. I cleaned Up their mess and took down The many nests they had built All over the patio. Soon, the back yard was like It used to be .... Quiet, serene.... And no one demanding their Rights to a free meal. Now let's see..... Our government gives out Free food, subsidized housing, Free medical care and free Education, and allows anyone Born here to be an automatic Citizen. Then the illegals came by the Tens of thousands. Suddenly Our taxes went up to pay for Free services; small apartments Are housing 5 families; you Have to wait 6 hours to be seen By an emergency room doctor; Your child's second grade class is Behind other schools because Over half the class doesn't speak English. Corn Flakes now come in a Bilingual box; I have to 'press one ' to hear my bank Talk to me in English, and People waving flags other Than our flag are Squawking and screaming In the streets, demanding More rights and free liberties. Just my opinion, but maybe it's time for the government To take down the bird feeder. If you agree, pass it on; if not, Continue cleaning up the poop.

Good point.Ive helped several newbs get started over the years and always advise them to buy a "decent" rod and dont skimp on a cheap line,buy the best.IMHO,theres no point in a beginner buying a high end rod out of the gate,they won't have the skill or experience to appreciate it's virtues.
