I went last weekend, I would go again this weekend however I will warn you about a couple of things. Because of the massive amount of snow and low clouds, little avy control has been done. The only open areas were Timber, Whitepass and Bear. With the increased traffic due to the recent snow this meant everyone funneled into essentially these two areas. Best snow was found off whitepass. If you know the hill then you will know where to go here. It rained. Everything above snowline was really good, not some much below, stay up above snowline. Bring your own lunch, there were huge lineups to get into the bars. Or do a late lunch, or better yet say screw lunch and just rip it up all day. This is also the least busy time at lifts. Not trying to be negative just trying to help you enjoy your day. I found lots of waist deep untouched powder, so you will have fun. Hopefully they will be able to open a few bowls for your. I was really hoping to try out the polar peak lift, but currie never opened all day. Have fun. J

Logging In Castle As Early As Next Week
jasonvilly replied to seanbritt's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Not willing to beat a deadhorse to death with my opinion that the Castle area should be left alone but, I would also like to throw these points into the gamut of responses. Spray lakes will spend absolutely no money in the Castle area, they will not hire people from there, they will not purchase fuel from there, products will not be processed there. Nothing will be spent on or in this community. Everything will come from the Cochrane area shop or elsewhere. They will only take...nothing will be given back. Heck they own the Atlas road leading to the old Atlas mill and they dont want to be held responsible for the upkeep of road and bridges. Instead they would rather have the government take it over, meaning the tax payers in the castle area would be paying for the upkeep of the road that Spray trucks on. Now that is slap in the face. -
Just saw that it is playing on the movie channel on bell. I pvr'd it, will watch it later. Synopsis: Looking at the battle to halt proposals for coal bed methane which threatens a fragile ecosystem. Just thought I would pass it on.

Shuttle Thread Spin Off From The Guide Thread.
jasonvilly replied to bcubed's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
I think you are talking about Montana. I used these services as well, however I found the shuttle distances to be WAY less then Calgary. Typically a 10-15 minute drive at most for a full day float ( used shuttles on missouri, Madison and yellowstone). However the cheapest was $25 not $20. To put it in perspective here are a few comparatives I can think of... Beer in Calgary at a bar $5-8 Montana $1-2 Lift ticket at sunshine $85 whitefish $50 Camping in Alberta $15-25 Montana $7-15 (at FAS sites or forestry service sites which would be equivalent of provincial park) There are others but those are the ones I know. economy wise, it is unfair to compare Calgary to montana or any of the northwest states IMHO. I think uber makes the best point, supply and demand. However 420 makes a good point, if you don't agree with the price then do it on your own. This can be said for many things. In the end i think it is worth it for the convenience purely to save time, meaning more time on the water. -
I like the idea of luncheon or maybe a get together over a few beers. I would help organize and find a place. Ill see what I have laying around at home to offer up.

Smith River Montana Float
jasonvilly replied to jasonvilly's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Application process for 2012 opens in January. It is $10 to apply and $60 for float fees when you register on the day you float. Montana fishing license would be about $50 for 4 days. http://stateparks.mt.gov/parks/permits/smithRiver.html There would obviously be a better chance if we had more people in a "group" applying. Maximum party size is 15 but I think smaller would be much better. We would also need to figure out some other things. Example: at that time of year a Raft would probably be the best option. I found a place in Montana that we could rent a couple. Drift boat would be tough I hear. This of course is only possible if we got a permit for this year. -
Anyone ever do this? I was talking to some guys in Montana who said it is a must do. Thinking about applying for a permit in January for this upcoming august. 59 miles. 1 put in 1 take out. 4 days on the river. Would also be looking for those interested in joining for the adventure.

Ridgeline Or Santa Fe
jasonvilly replied to fishinglibin's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
I own the V6 grand Cherokee. Love mine. 250,000 km still going strong. Gets pretty decent mileage, however the power range is a little weak. If you are planning on towing I wouldn't recommend it. If you do want to go grand Cherokee and need to tow I would look at the 3l diesel that they had a couple years ago. I have experience with them as well and they are extremely fuel efficient and lots of power to tow. -
A Nice Day On The River
jasonvilly replied to reevesr1's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Sunday was definitely a beautiful day to be outdoors. Got an opportunity in the afternoon to fish with hydroman for the first time.I didn't catch many fish but it sure was an enjoyable day with great company. Judging from the stories Rick shared when we fished I bet you guys were just a hoot and hollering on the bank. -
Mongolia, Taimen, 15 Days?
jasonvilly replied to Jayhad's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
My father in law did this trip. He had a blast. Might not help but June is no good for a teacher but if you would consider early July, I would be interested in that. -
Not fishing related I own a bit of land with my mom near ghost dam. Too far for me to go and check every weekend....anyway neighbour called and said someone had cut down about 30 feet of fence and was quadding on the land. He went to investigate and saw them pulling off a big buck with their quad. (He wasn't sure if I gave them permission) I doubt I would give permission to cut my fence, would have been nice if he got their plate number. So they illegally trespass, cut down a fence, and poach a deer. GRRRRRR :$*%&: There goes fishing Saturday, got to go mend some fence.

Thinking about getting into tying my own flies. Just starting to research everything so no decisions have been made. Looking at starter kits and think I have one picked out. However it doesn't come with materials. Been looking around on ebay and thought this might be a good deal just to get started with some of the basic things before it turns into a money pit. What do you think? http://www.ebay.ca/itm/FLY-TYING-MATERIALS...=item3cbcbc7e87

Rick I will need to borrow your ferrari and maybe a little pocket money. Also if you had a map of where exactly I should stand on 8th ave (your honey hole please) to find these girls.....it would be very much appreciated. I promise not tell anyone what I was using or where I went.

What the heck Rick! You mean the custom 20/20 club t shirt that I ordered in august and have been wearing everyday isn't cool? Man times have changed ;-)

I caught a couple of yellowstone cutts while in yellowstone park. They were no where near as colorful as those fish. Love the waterfall picture as well.
-
Jeremie I will believe you if you do the same for me.... legit 20" fish on a size 20 trico fly in early August, but I haven't had my camera since it took a dip with me on the Highwood. People may not believe me but I still think about it when I go to bed. Awesome feeling.

Pffffftttttt why go South like everyone else. Bunch'o'lemmings. I hear that Kamchatka is balmy and beautiful that time of year if you bring a parka and good boots. ;-) Go catch some of dem big wild mouse eating rainbow trout and salmon on the Zhupanova. (Do I need to insert a sarcasm note here? I don't want anyone to confuse the above as an actual honest to goodness post when all I am doing is merely trying to bump up my post number. But in all seriousness those rainbows would be awesome. But I guess if a guy HAS to go somewhere warm and sip Mi Tai's Costa Rica, Cuba and Belize would be my choices. In that order.)
