  1. That yeti reminded me of Jim Carey.
  2. It is surprising that any company is looking to bring a new coal mine onstream given the extremely low world price of coal. There have been producing coal mines in NE B.C that have shut down recently as it's not worth producing at those low prices. And there is no sign that prices will rise anytime soon. I think Australia is flooding the market and unless China was to need way more coal than at present, (unlikely as growth is slowing there) prices might not rebound anytime soon. Whether they continue you to pursue this or not would seem to hinge on prices rebounding but that's only if logic prevails.
  3. I was thinking how handy it would be fishing an unknown stream. You could find out whether upstream has more good spots or downstream instead of walking and guessing wrong. And my other idea was to attach my waterproof camera to a float and let it drift over pools, then retrieve it, playback and see what's down in the pool. Still perfecting that---my 1.5" ABS pipe float was too short and the camera pitching and wobbling in the water made it hard to see clearly.
  4. His writings certainly inspired me and helped me pass many cold winter evenings. As a beginner flyfisherman, his magazine and book opened my eyes to the wondrous possibilities around me that I had not known of. I only wish I'd actually met him; My condolences to friends and family, I am sure his passing is a huge loss to all who knew him.
  5. A few years ago I saw a Ling in shallow water in the Bow doing exactly that. And it looked like that too.
  6. They should random camp like me. Sleep in my van, cook on a backpackers white gas stove, never light a fire cuz the novelty wore off after age 12. Rarely park in the same spot twice unless its a gravel pit. I like those the best.
  7. Hank Patterson has a good video on tying flies
  8. I use my regular boots and wear 2 pairs of MEC neoprene socks inside. Size large and X-large over those. Works fine, foot doesn't move around. Turn'em inside out to dry and then wear them that way next trip, so alternate them.
  9. Progressives work fine for me and it didn't take tha long to get used to them either.
  10. Ditto on the lime trude! Deadly when lime sallies are out.
  11. The bananas one is a myth just like the Avon skin so soft was. In fact, I had read that eating bananas attracted them. I eat a banana every day at breakfast and no discernible difference at all. What works is deet, the active ingredient in the repellents that work. The topic has largely been studied to death by various organizations including US military.
  12. You could ride a bike in and have it to yourself now!
  13. I know I carry way more than I actually need or use. Maybe a couple of hundred. Rather than keep trying a wide assortment, I'm more likely to walk to a different spot that might hopefully harbour less choosey fish if the first 10 flies don't work.
  14. Better yet. You will be able to entice fisherwomen to your net! Works better than just dropping them a line.
  15. Buy 1/3 of a Gibson J45 acoustic guitar...got enough fishin stuff.
  16. You can do it yourself from this video or buy the biggest possible set of felt soles at one of the local shops and take it all to a cobbler, like Alpine shoe in Kensington. When you buy felts take your boot along and verify the new felt sole is big enough. Simms require biggest, widest available. You can stud them up with #12 sheet metal screws from hardware store then. Get stainless steel l if available, last longer.
  17. Speaking of Kern River, a good Springsteen song about it sung by lovely Emmylou Harris
  18. If you can make the current one last maybe they will be cheaper in summer when not as many people are replacing them.....
  19. Regarding a bigger one looking to eat them both, all the times I've caught bulls, I've noted that it has never happened where a big bull goes after a smaller bull that's been hooked, unlike when a cutty is hooked. I assumed it was some unwritten code of bull trout ethics where they don't attack each other, though a big one may initially show interest in a smaller hooked bull it seems he then decides "Oh, he's one of us" and leaves it be. Maybe it just hasn't happened yet but those pools on Wigwam were full of big bulls that never chased the smaller ones I hooked. Anyway, good vid. Isn't it amazing how those bulls suddenly appear from nowhere?
  20. This little incident sure makes walk and wade fishing look tame. Never knew what I've been missing.
  21. Stuck one in my forehead once casting in a sidewind, glad I hadn't forgot to pinch the barb that time. Occasionally I do.
  22. She hasn't aged a bit, just a wee bit more curvy (not that there's anything wrong with that). Eric Clapton also flyfishes so I've read.
  23. I bet the Calgary herald or CBC could make a real good story out of this incident, interviewing the Fernie outfitter, the guide, Fish and Wildlife in BC or whoever oversees the CO's...
  24. Yes. Post it. I'm the type that makes a point of calling businesses like that and tell them 3000 users here all know that they are a-holes. PM me if you want. I go through there sometimes, I could even say it to their face. I enjoy that type of confrontation sometimes.
  25. I usually keep fishing when I'm along a stream/river where there are tall trees, the rationale being that lightning would hit the taller objects first and I would merely be crushed by the falling debris instead.
