  1. Ok so I tried again using a glow bead instead of the head and using red wire to secure the hackle. Still need to find some hackle that the correct width so it doesn't cover the point of the hook.
  2. Thanks the step by step is great and yes the tail is too long probably because I tied the marabou in towards the rear. I had a question about your tie, did you tie your hackle down or are you using the wire to hold it in place? Probably confirming my newb status with that question.
  3. Thanks for the suggestions both of you. Dryfly I followed the directions on that link and it is working better now. gonna need strong thread I think because I broke the thread once pulling it tight to get the hair to stand up. Also the tip of the bic pen was too narrow so I used the other end. SilverDoctor good point on the hackle covering the hook point, I have been trimming mine as I only have the one kind and its too long. Gonna need more material very soon.
  4. So I have read that some people start tying flys with these but this my first attempt. Anyone seeing any way to improve the head portion? Should I use more hair or something other than deer hair? Any criticism would be welcome.
  5. Sign me up. I would love a chance to learn from you.
  6. Best of luck with your surgery, and speedy and full recovery. I work for the health region at Foothills in fact, not in patient care directly, the quality of care in Calgary is very good despite all of the negative press it gets from the media. I guess I was a little late but I hope everything went well.
  7. Thats so cool gonna have to make some myself. We should start a whole forum section on ways to making cheap fly fishing paraphenalia.
  8. I have been fly-fishing for about 6yrs but I think the issue is more the amount of time spent fishing rather than the number of years past. I see Max saying he has 7yrs and I don't really think you can compare the amount experience. I might get 20ish days per year where as some seem to get 300+. Days on the river would be more accurate but this will be interesting none the less.
  9. WOW, was half expecting him to clip one of those gaurd rails. That video needs an overlayed speedometer.
  10. I just go when I can and its seems to work out better in the evening most times. On the weekends I am much more likely to try an early morning trip because of the amount of recovery time needed.
  11. How thick roughly? is Darice a brand name? Sweet looking flys btw. I might have to try tying some of those. I had bought a sheet of yellow but its seems like its about half as thick as I would like.
  12. Wouldn't keep me dry, would have to be pretty gross water for me to think that was a better idea than wet wading. On the other probably could drop several pounds in a few hours out fishing.
  13. Pink Floyd The Division Bell Tour BC Place early 90s Roadside Attraction Thunderbird stadium UBC Featuring the Hip, Ziggy Marley, Spirit of the west Etc. early 90's The Tusnami Relief Concert Saddle Dome (I am really bad with dates today) But man I am so jealous of the Silver Doctors list mostly because I never got a chance to see a lot of those bands before key members died. I have a tragic story of missing one of the last Grateful Dead concerts because I was in high school and my parents wouldn't let me go to Seattle to watch it.
  14. The have a website. Togen's Fly Shop Their prices seem reasonable even with shipping I am thinking about ordering one of their combo packs. not sure if they sell in Calgary or not.
  15. Wading boots and 2 pairs of socks. My wading boots are probably a half size too big and the extra socks keep my feet from sliding around.
  16. I have never had any problems with the service at Wholesale. Knowlegdeable friendly staff, at least willing to point you to the right person. I have noticed that the general trend that customer service in the city has decreased with the amount of well paying jobs out there. And yes it is very nice that it is next door to Ikea, and Micheals for that matter.
  17. I would think that in terms of the actual scent on the fly that it wouldn't really have much of an impact when fishing the bow specifically because of a few of things: 1 I don't think fish have enough time to smell food as it is floating by, 2 I doubt that the taste would change how fast they spit out a fly. 3 especially when nymphing or streamering your fly is gonna be well cleaned after a couple of drifts. I do however agree with the cleaning of hands after applying bug spray as I have definelty have seen deet disolve plastics and I imagine any long chain hydrocarbon would be affected.
