In-River Future Flood Mitigation Actives....
bcubed replied to troutfriend's topic in News Discussion and Current Issues
660-830 million dollars would go a long way in buying out homes in flood zones... After seeing the amount of wood that got moved around on the highwood, any culvert is a joke. Wonder how the habitat would be behind the berm after all the sediment that was present in the 'pond' started to drop out... -
In-River Future Flood Mitigation Actives....

I love the notion of gravel removal. Talk about the most futile waste of money. Tervita must be ecstatic, could be doing this till eternity as its been sold as one of the best way to stop floods. -
Looking To Buy A New Rod/reel For Next Season

Helios 2 4 weight, medium action...8 to 8'6" footer... Lamson Litespeed (or similar) to match... I have the helios 3 weight, and it is by far my favorite rod for cutty fishing on streams around your cutty hut. The 4 is a little nicer if you're fishing the Gap, and the ever present Nate shows his ugly head. -

Considering how stuff like 'river scraping' was pushed through without all the appropriate measures, I'd be interested to see the amount of meaningful environmental assessment prior to throwing up these berms. -

All you have to do is drive the highwood road right now and see why this proposal for 'dry' berms is ridiculous. If a storm of that size hit again, there is no culvert that will hold back the amount of water that was coming down.... A note for those who aren't quick to tell where the highwood ones are located. The first 'dam' would be directly at the Kananaskis Gate. Funny, since during the presentation they said they are kept away from "habitation near by"... I guess Eden Valley being less then 2 km away isn't nearby enough.. Second site is at within the canyon, west of Longview. Guess we might as well start generating power with these berms to help pay for them..... -
That's cause it is. Didn't get up there monger?

Sending Sage Flyrod In For Repair
bcubed replied to northfork's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
A) shipping is done via registered mail, and sending you a tip is goin to be a 2.25' foot tube. Not $10 shipping, I assure you. B ) time. They have to match the tip section to the piece that you broke to ensure it fits. If it doesnt, they will re-roll you a new section. Graphite isn't free, neither is time. C) handling. Someone has to take the time to bring the rod in, get it dealt with, keep organized, and send it back without screwing up. People aren't free. You're getting a new piece for $60... Seems better then $400 for a new one.. -

The Golfing Got My Brain

Winter is coming.... you'll be fishing soon enough. I truly believe that there has been a lot of this going around this season. Losing that first half of july, a good wack of anglers didn't break out the rods this summer, and by the time the fishing was back in shape they were not all that into getting out there. I'm sure all the fly shops would agree that it's been a tougher season, even after the flooding. Was pretty weird floating the city in july and seeing 1 or 2 walk and wade guys.. -

Won't lie, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often on the Bow with the lack of tact regarding boat launches... Setting your boat/pontoon/rods/etc in the launch is not cool. Getting your boat into the water should take maybe 30 seconds. Same with taking your boat out. Maybe it's how fast the boats are being bought, but the very first thing I ever learnt with my drift boat is to never go into the launch until you're ready to go. It amazes me to this day how many people have not figured this one out, it's very simple and very respectful to your fellow users. -

the Gold is a true 5 weight, the grand is the 5.5 weight. I broke my 5 weight last year, and then brought my wrong reel for fishing my 6, and it was god-awful (hopper fishing). Seriously, overloading is fine (to a point), underloading is plain awful (especially on fast-action rods). Not sure why it would tangle more or less, get a 6 wt line for your 6.. If you're not going to ever have them both strung up, then yes extra spools will work.. Yes the 5 weight will work, but it will not be efficient at larger dries and streamers..mass moves mass, and a 5 weight line has the same amount of mass whether it's on a 5, 6 or 12 weight..

18" most of the season? I guess those first 2 weeks of July were my imagination. Guess when you have a lake resort to go guide on, you don't notice the clarity of the rivers that are on a different stratosphere than your own. "Just imagine the Bow being jacked to 400+ m3sec today just because there's some light rain in the forecast, and having that happen pretty much every time it rains all summer. It could be a lot worse down there" While it may not hit 400 (which it did last year after that stupidity at Spray), its a given that the river will blow out for at least 12 hours if there's a good thunderstorm anywhere in town... Rather then playing the 'who has it worse game', perhaps there should be more discussion about dam management in general in Alberta...Really, get one guy that likes fishing below the Three Rivers Dam, and they win that fight anyway.. At least be discussion on flows in the relative near future on the RDR... Fairly apparent in the recent world that fish don't come anywhere near the top when people are thinking flood risk.

depends on the weather. Typically i'm only wearing waders if its spring or late fall here, so cold water, or steelheading. The simms exstreams are the best socks i've tried for cold weather (november in northern BC cold..). I like the patagonia socks, however i tend to shrink them as i suck at laundry..
