  1. Sell a couple of golf courses and build boat access. Don
  2. Guys, unlike the last 50 years of crapping on fisheries, the present Govt closed fisheries to protect trout and developed a Policy on Areation in less than 15 years ( only took weeks). Give 'em some slack. Least they are trying. And frankly I cannot for the life of me figure out why Outdoorsmen wish for a return of the last 50 years of wild things getting screwed. Don
  3. From what I heard, opposition to a surcharge on quads is lead by people from Eastern Alberta. Not sure why as so much of the land in Eastern Alberta are grazing leases. Also I learned that the Prov. Govt had increased the number of enforcement people by 10 in the Rocky area in the summer months. This is in addition to the increases of enforcement people in the County which is now 5 an increase of 500% over the past 15 years or so years. Don
  4. Lad, Always I hear about the few rotten apples spoil the barrel.cin my experience about 1/2 of the barrel is full of rotten apples. However, I spent 1/2 hour listening to a guy who organized and ran a program of trail repair and maintainence In the lands North of Burnstick Lake locally known as rig street road. $400,000 got some of the area repaired. He related that he would like to see a surcharge on OHV license of $60/year which would raise $7,000,000 for trail maintainence. He's outta money. The destruction continues. By the way, a trail I used to the Oldman for years now has holes deep enough that you can just barely see out of the windows of my pickup. I couldn't figure out why till I watched about twenty quadders ride through the holes. Each time they picked up a little mud, not a lot, but time after time till the hole is now over 3' deep. Rest assured that I picked up a little mud but not nearly the amount 60 trips those quads made while I was there. The difference is magnitude. Don
  5. Screw fair. When the actions of people destroy the place, banning is only the first step that should taken. All that crap we've been feed that people will always do the right thing is a heap big pile of CRAP! Unless and until we start to take responsibility for those not capable, we will continue to see our land destroyed. Don
  6. Lad, I'm willing to give up washing my truck in the river, mud bogging, running through muskeg till it's a bog, hill climbing which sets up erosion of the land i'm OK with banning my activity - are you OK with doing the same. Also I won't break my heart to give up leaving campfires burning when I leave, shooting fireworks most of the night, running off several thousand rounds of 9mm. Oh and throwing garbage all over the bush. Hot damn, I could ban a lot of things. Don
  7. Attended the presentation of "trails" in Rocky last night. From what I saw there were no OHV owners or organizations in attendance. The audience was mostly composed of hunter outfitters and horse clubs. The money for the construction is coming from a disaster insurance fund and is done this year. I asked where the OHV riders were while pointing out the audience probably represented 200 people and 30,000 quads go through Rocky on a single long weekend. Seemed like the program wasn't reaching the problem. It was obvious that the trail builders were in as much as possible keeping off lower reaches and protecting trout habitat. But their stance didn't effect some audience members who stated they were going to use the river as access. Don
  8. How in the hell did I hunt for 30 years without a quad? Those damn things are the reason a lot of us have given up hunting. I wish our new Govt success in the Castle and like many others after near 50 years of "getting consulted" we are well trained in not expecting much from Govt. Don
  9. Let us hope this bunch of elected people deliver better than the last bunch. Alberta's landscape can't afford another 50 years of lousy performance. Don
  10. If the energy east is built, where will the price be set from. The reason I ask is out gasoline prices are set in the Chicago Market. And whatever Alberta gasoline has do with Chicago baffles the crap putt me. However, if the selling prices are set FOB Cushing, the resultant pipeline tarrif to the east cost will erode the value immensely. Regards, Don
  11. Fishing.... I've got a Major rod. Bought it near 60 years ago. It was solid glass. The rod was equipped with spin guides, slip ring reel seat and a all cork handle. I paid a whole $10 for the rod and a spin reel. Took me nearly a year to make the money. Regards, Don
  12. Folks, I've been pondering the Energy East pipeline and what it would cost to build and operate. The question is: with tar sands effluent at such a reduced price and with the pipeline tariff, would there be any money left for the producer? Regards, Don
  13. With thanx to Taco who wisely saved this site. Looking over the legacy pictures it is clear that there exists a lot fewer trees in the first set of pictures as compared to today. The ridges I hunted when I was raised in Turner Valley are now completely covered with trees. Not a lot of elk habitat left. The grasslands are now forest. http://mountainlegacy.ca Don
  14. I use both the Morgan Mill and planing forms + planes. Depends on how I feel. Heading for the web site over the next week or so are several rods. Plus I have two more in the build line up. Kinda laid back this year. Only got 7 in the works. I think I'm spending too much time on the IPad >Facebook. Thanx for posting the video SD. Don
  15. Clever old Grannie... Yesterday my daughter e-mailed me again, asking why I did not do something useful with my time. "Like sitting around the pool and drinking wine is not a good thing?" I asked. Talking about my "doing-something-useful" seems to be her favorite topic of conversation. She was "only thinking of me", she said and suggested that I go down to the Senior Center and hang out with other people my age. I did this and when I got home last night, I decided to play a prank on her. I e-mailed her and told her that I had joined a Parachute Club. She replied, "ARE YOU NUTS?" You are 78 years old and now you are going to start jumping out of airplanes?" I told her that I even got a Membership Card and e-mailed a copy to her. She immediately telephoned me and yelled, "GOOD GRIEF, MOM, WHERE ARE YOUR GLASSES?!" This is a Membership to a Prostitute Club, not a Parachute Club." "Oh man, I am in trouble again," I said, "I really do not know what to do. I signed up for five jumps a week!!" The line went quiet and her friend picked up the phone and said that my daughter had fainted. Life as a Senior Citizen is not getting any easier, but sometimes it can be fun.
  16. Website shows no location or dates for Red Deer. Why? Don
  17. Bcube, Being as the otters showed with PC's. Maybe, just maybe, they will follow the PCs. Just what our Ttout streams needed. A stocked predator. F.....g idiots Don
  18. Bcube, As you rightly point out, a lot of "trout flies" would be better handled by spin gear. Casting a Clouser w/o using a line capable is called lobbing. And I had no idea that Tarpon ate tiny flies, I just assumed as a predator, it ate 'big". Don
  19. Hate to burst the bubble but the flood of '95 washed a lot of cuts into the Crow downstream of the falls, Within a few years they were gone, Some places cuts can't live no matter what other fish exist. Removal of any trout or char will not magically result in an explosion of native species. In some cases it will help & in others the result maybe no fish at all. Up my way, you could remove all the Browns and brookies and in very few higher elevation streams there may not be any effect, Things are not all that simple. Don
  20. Fish pro, Fly size/weight determines fly line weight required to cast it. Big flies = big fish = heavy lines. Note the word cast not lobed as some of the techniques of today require. Don
  21. Folks, There may be some of you contemplating building a bamboo rod. Starting in 1988 and continuing every second year since, a group of bamboo rods makers gather in BC. Originally we met @ Corbett Lake and now meet in Kamloops, BC. There are programs to suit beginners to professional. Here is a registration form. The group numbers from 50>100 with several hundreds of years of experience. If you are interested, give George a shout. The registration form is attached. regards, Don
  22. Well guys, the rod is a 7'6" four weight. Using durobronze reel seat fittings and bronze snakes and tip tops. Two coats of varnish is on the rod, Then it's a light sanding with 600 wet/dry and 0000 steel wool. Then it's one more varnish dip prior to final polish. After that comes the guides. Regards, Don
  23. Gee, I never thought about lifting the pictures up and looking underneath. I just appreciated the talent required to create the pictures. Must be a shack nasty season outbreak. Don
